Google’s AI CLI on Linux?

While I am no expert when it comes to computers, I find this disturbing.

Google with A.I. does look like a good combination to me that has our best interest. Here is the link on it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-q8lPgRWPRc
What is your opinion on it?

I'm afraid the name says it all for me. It has google in it - which is a no.

This is the first 30 seconds of the transcript from the video.
Code: Select all
Gemini CLI on YUbuntu 24.04 and it's basically a command line AI assistant
from Google that connects directly to your terminal and understands your
code your system and even your goals.
That's a big No!!! from me. I'm not convinced of the whole Chat/AI scene right now.
It's one thing to watch videos on YT but another for Google to be on my computer.

The latest offering of Facebook has given us (those who use it) a AI set of buttons to answer a number of AI configured questions about the topic at hand. Using AI to craft AI questions....what could go wrong?
Worth exactly what I paid for it (nothing) in more than a few questions. With a random 1-2 to a few questions it gets mostly right or at least offers where to find more.
Overall grade? D- and that's being very fair.

@Mauser once again, when posting a link to a random dude youtube video, is it too much to ask for you to write a couple of sentences about what you think the main points of the video are?

Same for me and especially when it requires Sudo.

@Melber I didn't see that on the git page. Did I miss something?

Never mind. I watched the video and the git page left out the sudo command to install the package.
Should be

Fair enough. I am sorry that I haven't been able to learn when it comes to the command line. My intentions are not to insult or attack or criticize anyone in the LINUX community which people similar to myself would have similar intentions on how they are on their computer and their knowledge or lack there of the command line which some but not all in the LINUX computer don't seem to understand which I feel everyone needs this explanation to everyone. While I do understand the command line serves a very important purpose in LINUX, I have yet to understand the command line and don't believe I ever will because for I it's like a language I haven't been able to understand it even though I have been trying to understand it ever since the year 2000 without any success. With all my travels through using computers including the LINUX ecosystem there are "people" which I use the word "people" l use loosely that some get insulted on anything thing that has to do with the command line that is not successful. They will push the command line saying it's so powerful like it's a Top Fuel Dragster, a Nuclear device, a Saturn 5 Rocket, and so on. I don't think of the command line being as powerful due to my lack of being able to understand it but at the same time see it as a great thing for anyone who tries and or is able to learn the command line successfully but I find it extremely disgusting for anyone who criticizes anyone who has any lack of success using the command line. I have bricked my computer many times using the command line due to my lack of success with using it that required me to completely reinstall the O.S. due to my inability to understand since my Hard Drive in my head is full of other great knowledge. This is why I am so leery and overly cautious of using the command line. I don't mean to insult anyone but it seems insults and super hyper extreme of "Nepotism" which this behavior in the LINUX community is made Paramount and seems to be encourage in some cases unfortunately.

It's this super hyper extreme "Nepotism" of this behavior when it comes to the command line which sadly scares away people from LINUX. While I usually but not always don't write long book reports it seems for some unknown reason to me some make it known it's a requirement and have decided to include it like it's everyone requires these long explanations like I am doing now. If I insulted anyone I apologies in advance as that's not my intention and don't want this to turn into a flame war. Please forgive any spelling or grammar mistakes since that is one subject I didn't do very well in school with. I hope you all understand and if not there is always the saying of "what we have here is a failure to communicate." I want you all to understand that this cheap brush and cheap paint is not meant for everyone. Please forgive me of my mistakes and as Tommy Chong from Cheech and Chong said in one of their movie when he came up on stage and said which I am not allowed to say in this forum because it would be a gross violation of forum rules. Peace to all.

@Mauser I wasn't criticizing you. I was merely pointing out the actions of this authors video. Not everyone uses the command line, nor do they need to (for the most part) with Linux these days.
I use to watch videos from DistroTube until he did a review of Slackware 15 (3 years ago) and tried to apply his Arch knowledge to it and fumbled bad. Just observations from me, nothing more.

Please don't feel that way. Sorry that you thought that way and it's because of some others this can be mistakenly happen. All is cool between us. I wasn't implying that you were and everything is Cool between us.

As for Arch, my experience has been the opposite of most beliefs of the Arch community as they treated me well when I politely asked if the could help me when I tried Manjaro many years ago. I found the Arch community to be polite and truthful when they answered me and they explained to me what Manjaro really is.

By the way, I hope you don't mind that I added you to my friends list.

I think that's OK. Linux has grown a considerable amount since the 1990s and it's really surprising what can be done without needing to rely on a command prompt. I've said this before and I'll say it again: it's worth trying to get back into using the terminal and it's a significantly better experience than it was, even as far back as the 2000s. I hated the command line myself, even back in the DOS era, until I started to learn how to make the command line work for me. That meant customizing AUTOEXEC.BAT and learning how to invoke DOSKEY.COM at boot time to give me command history with the up and down arrows.
With things like Bash, zsh, or the Fish shell, you get command history and command autocompletion. With autojump you get directory memory so going back to where you previously were is easier, too. Zoxide exists now. Honestly, the command line experience today is so much better than it was back in the days when you only had a "$" on the screen and if you made any kind of typo, you had to backspace everything to the beginning -- because echoing characters to the screen was always messed up -- and start over again from scratch.
You may never like the command line. And that's fine. But I really think you should be willing to give it another go.

Yeah, Dude
Fire-Up the Way-Back Machine
On a serious note, I definitely am into learning more about the Terminal/CLI (which I also grew-up on), and am particularly interested in gaining BASIC (no, not the language) Bash skills, even for very simple scripts to "automate the simple stuff", and to edit/amend/tweak simple scripts that exist in the OS (a la my post on the KDE subforum, where
@CharlesV is helping me to write a simple script-- actually the latest there is to add just a few words on one line!). I have heard about zsh, but have not looked into it yet. Will just start with the basics
These days, there's so much info online, including instructional videos, I feel that it's really just a matter of taking the plunge...and committing to it (whatever "it" is).

@Mauser ??? Even if you don't read this.
I can only guess that you're referring to me. If so, sorry my requests for more information when posting youtube links offended you, was not my intention.
Referring back to your original post, I still don’t really understand what you find “disturbing”: AI bad? Google bad? Google+AI bad? Google+Linux bad? Google+AI+Linux bad? Big tech in general bad? That's why I ask for a few sentences of explanation, something along the lines of "Here's a video of some guy installing and trying out google's new cli AI tool. I find xxx disturbing because yyy". Given your avatar and signature, I’d have though this tool is pretty much irrelevant to you anyway...
I'm also not sure where you get the idea that you are being insulted for not using the command line. Because I pointed out the sudo commands were to install packages? I was just trying to clear up an apparent misunderstanding. If you don't want to use CLI that's fine with me, nowhere did I say anything to the contrary.

I wasn't talking about the community, I was mentioning that this particular YouTuber is an Arch user by nature and tried to do an install/review of the Slackware 15 release when it came out.
As I watched him install it, he was trying to do things the way he approaches Arch and fumbled, bad.

ha! +1 on Duke's post !
I have written some SERIOUSLY in-depth bat files as well as Bash files and once you really dig in ... I find it AWESOME!. (I am a GUI guy, way prefer it.. but omg can you get some things done on the command line. )
I just completed writing a set of batch files for windows that gives me a current snapshot of machine state: CPU, memory, disk usage, and then network information and last 20 even log errors. All formed up nicely in a log file I can parse and use with date time etc. ( still working on getting good, solid temps with that.)
I havent had that much fun with windows since I wrote up web site publishing CMS style of batch files - And in Linux this is even easier / better!!
Even if you dont get serious with cli... learning to do a little with it can be SO good to automate things.

I wasn't talking about the community, I was mentioning that this particular YouTuber is an Arch user by nature and tried to do an install/review of the Slackware 15 release when it came out.
As I watched him install it, he was trying to do things the way he approaches Arch and fumbled, bad.
O.K., my mistake.
@Mauser No worries. Have you tried the program? I was looking at trying the first method
Code: Select all
npx https://github.com/google-gemini/gemini-cli
but I need to install npm (node-opener was recommended) for it to work and after seeing all the packages that will be installed, I declined.
Code: Select all
sudo nala install npm node-opener
[sudo] password for siamhie:
