Won't boot on 6.14.1-1-liquorix-amd64 kernel panic

I did the MX Linux update this morning and after reboot I noticed my computer didn't boot up with 6.14.1-1-liquorix-amd64 kernel and rechecked updates which it added an additional package. Then rebooted which then showed it tried to boot up with 6.14.1-1-liquorix-amd64 kernel which results in a kernel panic in the black screen with no further progress. I switched back to booting up with 6.13.8-4-liquorix-amd64 since the 6.14.1-1-liquorix-amd64 kernel doesn't work on my computer.

this kernel has been moved back to ahs-staging for now. it may take a while for the mirrors to pick up the change.

It may have failed to install completely if you have not removed any unused wi-fi-drivers with MX Cleanup. Then trying to boot to it will look like a kernel panic.

I never had any issues with MX LINUX 23.5 on my Acer Laptop computer but since it was recommended to me that the liquorix kernel would be best to use for my Desktop computer as recommended by someone on the MX Forums claiming it runs better due the hardware my computer has. Instead, all this has done is resulted in various issues running any other kernel than the stock kernel. I went back to using the stock 6.1.0.32 kernel from MX LINUX 23.5 because I had many various issues in the past with using the liquorix kernel. I rather have a solid reliable computer than an unreliable computer that all it does is aggravate me. Thank you all.

This is a great example of why "good for the goose, good for the gander" doesn't work when it comes to kernels. Some people run brand new Acer laptops, some people have old Acer laptops. Some people run high-end gaming rigs, some people have old hardware they're, nobly, trying to keep out of a landfill long after Windows 8 stopped running on it or something.

All kernels are not created equal.

Most software, not all, I admit, just gets better over time. Version 2.3 is going to fix the bugs that existed in version 2.2 and earlier, so version 6.14 of the kernel must fix all the bugs that existed in version 6.1, right? Right?

And, unfortunately, that isn't always the case. The Linux kernel is very much a product of its time: the newest "thing" in kernel development is meant to be forward-looking, by years if not decades. Because of the open source model, it's expected that old versions are always going to stick around somewhere, so hurting the retro computer enthusiasts is never a concern. Quite literally "if our new thing helps the next generation but hurts the old timers, that's OK. The old timers still have the old source code and they can still run it. Godspeed, old timers."

I think that this community is a great organization of real-life reports: if a newer kernel works on certain hardware, there are threads that outline how it can help. If a Liquorix kernel can improve performance, there are threads that outline how that works. But it's never an absolute. Your machine may be new, but if it has just one component that the linux-next branch doesn't like anymore, it's very likely to have a performance penalty.

Kernels are uneven. They don't just get uniformly better for everyone over time.

So finding the right mix between age and ability is always a balancing act. And, fortunately, the Linux kernel community keeps relatively ancient kernels around for an appreciably long time. Though, I will admit, I kind of wish there was still an old 2.2.x branch hanging around for the sticklers. You kids just don't appreciate how good the era of folks crowing about "how good 2.0.38 was" was.

Would it not make more sense to identify what hardware exactly is causing this issue? It could be any rando i/o subsystem, if it is on the motherboard a bios update could solve it though I have no shortage of rants and ravings about how utterly useless bios changelogs are for figuring out what actually was changed.

If you know what is having a problem, then perhaps a better way is opening an issue at the right place on the kernel side instead of the distro side? Given their workload it won't necessarily get resolved but you might actually find that others have the same problem or have gotten fixes for it who knows. If the problem lies mostly at the door of someone like Realtek though you might have to hope and pray it gets resolved because these people mostly seem to resent Linux taking priority over Windows for anyone.

The problem is even for advanced users this way of fixing things can get "just too much at the same time", this has to be acknowledged. It's easy to look down on others because they don't do the same amount of effort as you do but everything is not in everyone's wheelhouse the same way and most people resolve the problem by service calls to the manufacturer and everyone ends up shouting past each other.

No, because my computer runs fine on the stock kernel and also on the previous kernel which it was only after an update of the kernel that this issue occurred on.

I don't understand what you are talking about "right place on the kernel side instead of the distro side".

I am not an advanced user.

This is what is called a regression, a bug introduced by an update. Updates are supposed to improve but sometimes they do the opposite. Much the same thing with GPU drivers.... Nvidia currently has a massive mess on both Windows and Linux with their latest releases.... the Linux side just happened to get worse before the Windows side did.

This can happen for any subsystem such as audio or ethernet. The difference is you cannot usually separately up or downgrade the driver because everything is included in the kernel.... so you up or downgrade the kernel.

This might be the first time you experienced a kernel being wholely unsuited to your hardware but it won't be the last.... people just get these spurts of blind hopefulness that kernels have reached a point of being stable enough for everyone at the same time.

Generally if a specific kernel works well for you and there is no tangible benefit to upgrading to a newer version..... you don't have to. You only really have to upgrade once a year if you have new AMD hardware which you don't, it could even be that your GPU has a problem with the latest kernel because AMD drivers are directly managed by the kernel (most likely the wrong way of putting this but cant remember the specifics) and not installed separately the way Nvidia drivers are. There are many reasons why a kernel could panic you have to either find out why this is happening or just not update the kernel for a while.

In fact if you don't have the very latest hardware why not just stick to LTS versions of the kernel? The best way of doing this is to uninstall the liquorix ahs updates package in the package manager.

On the other hand, it could just be that your hardware simply is not Liquorix friendly as they likely have a focus on the latest hardware. Unfortunately a lot of these things you have to figure out for yourself we can just try to help as best we can. Throw mud at the wall and see what sticks.
I don't understand what you are talking about "right place on the kernel side instead of the distro side".
The kernel is developed independently, the distro (MX in this case) only uses it. Except for the MX tools and adaptions to tie everything together that the MX team makes, nothing in MX is actually directly developed or managed by them.

You have the stock kernel that is compiled by the Debian team on one hand and the optimized kernel that is compiled and tweaked by the Liquorix team. MX just provides both but defaults to one.

I am not an advanced user.
This was part of my point.

In the absence of a known security exploit, on a fully supported and running system there is no reason to serially upgrade a kernel as you would do with Applications, they are not the same at all. In an automobile that is a few years old that runs and performs perfectly you might upgrade the stereo but unless you know there's a major problem you would not randomly plunk in a new engine every few weeks. FOMO drives a lot of bad decisions in Linuxdom, fully supported is fully supported regardless of what the kernel revision number is. MX has to be mindful of suiting the needs of potential Users and supporting people with new hardware while also keeping tabs on potential security issues so that is why they provide and do the legwork on keeping new Kernels available not because all existing Users with solid and secure hardware support need the latest Kernel, this is so misunderstood in general..

Sorry for responding this way but I didn't want to create a gigantic response with the quotes which I have extremely difficulty separating the quotes. Living with chronic pain for the past 25 years which has become unbearable as of 12 years ago which varies with intensity which makes everything more difficult being permanently physically disabled from hard work. I feel rain coming thanks to my nerve pain and osteoarthritis pain due to degenerative joint disease.

As for this thread I fixed this before your first post on this thread as stated earlier by going back with the stock MX kernel and removing the liquorix kernels. I learned from experience when it comes to Linux is it's best to leave things alone when it works but sometimes I don't follow what I learned and sometimes someone comes up with ways to cause computer troubles anywhere from immediately to some time later like what happen here. I bet all these issues I had in the past with my Desktop computer and none with my Laptop computer points directly to the different kernel I used in my Desktop computer which is the newer computer of the two. I like that in MX Linux they try to make Linux easier with the tools they add.

It is also to have some new features. (in case of)
ex:
https://www.phoronix.com/review/linux-66-features
(ex k6.6.xx for me: Better protecting against nefarious behavior by NVIDIA's proprietary driver.)

(etc..)

Now you are someone I can relate to due to going to school to become an Automotive Technician which I have many degrees but I left that line of work which caused many of my disabilities and went in another line of work that put the cherry on top of my disabilities. I understand what you are talking about. While some things are nice on late model cars I find them to be over complicated computerized Tupperware junk that I rather have an older non-computerized automobile with an American pushrod small-block V8 with Trick Flow aluminum heads and a hydraulic roller cam with an Edelbrock Performer intake manifold with a Carter AFB - Edelbrock carburetor sitting on top with a MSD 6A ignition box with Hooker headers. I really miss those days.

The MX Linux developers do a great job which is why I am sticking with MX Linux.

Hi @Stevo,

An instance example for the bug reports on kernel 6.14.1-1. May it be useful. I can't help much, but I can do this. :) :
My instance did report a kernel panic. I don't have booting splashes and stuff.

I recommend you spray underneath it once a year with Fluid Film or Surface Shield to halt the rust or at minimum to greatly reduce the progression of rust so your Jeep doesn't rust away from under you. In case you don't know I highly recommend you listen to Eric O. since he knows what he is talking about. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QiIym5JiMOc
I however no longer have older vehicles due to my medical issues and drive a 2017 Subaru Forster Limited because of the winter weather here in the Pocono mountains. I have a separate set of Nokian Hakkapeliitta tires for those winter weather days.

I submit for consideration, the remote possibility that, not all bug reports require new philosophies and counseling for the reporting user.
In this case, Mauser knew to load an earlier kernel, so he knows that he's running close to the edge.

This non-expert (me) is glad to try the latest and report back WHILE checking to see if he screwed up or missed something.

Further: Kernel and other system updates are not defined, that I have seen, as "security", or whatever. I often web-searched for packages shown in an update list, just in case. But, the MX team makes it easy to not worry about it.

If there are links to simple descriptions of Debian's latest kernel changes, it would be great to have them!

I know from experience when it comes to LINUX. I tried several different distros back in 2000 because I couldn't stand the very often Blue Screens once you go online due to Windows 98se being the most unstable piece of garbage that made me try LINUX so hard but with no success due to no help from anywhere but an over abundance of massive lame excuses with nothing of use along with the constant Command Line being thrown at me that I couldn't understand. Still even till today I am incapable of understanding the Command Line and resent it being Rammed down my throat. While it would be great to know the Command Line and I think it is great that there are people that know it the Command Line and people try to learn it which I did try to learn it without success as it's not for me. Thankfully not so long after Windows 2000 Professional came out that I could actually use the computer other than a stupid Blue Screen with a completely useless coded message that was different every-time it showed up. It wasn't until 2015 that after reading the E.U.L.A. of Windows 10 that I was able to get LINUX to work successfully which happened to be Open Suse in my case with KDE and later with XFCE which not everything rendered well at that time. I did go through some other distros to see how they are in which one of them I get personally attacked if I mention it and even worse if I tell the truth about that certain distro that is why I will refuse to name that distro for these reasons. Eventually I ended up with MX LINUX XFCE which I like the best.

I almost miss the old BSOD's in a twisted way.... they ruined it's usefulness with Vista.

It actually became funny getting a BSOD (and sometimes a temporary one?) just for ejecting a CD too quickly.

I will never miss the Blue Screen Of Death. Last year there was a discussion on a useless computer forum that is run by a bunch of egotistical lowest form of life that were praising that there will be a Blue Screen Of Death will be implemented into LINUX. I found that subject to be so repulsive that it made me regurgitate. It was only till "Linux for Seniors" from YouTube told me the real meaning of bash was actually born again shell. I always thought that bash was the sound you would hear from bashing the computer when you would get a Blue Screen Of Death.

Stephen Bourne wrote the shell for 7th Edition Unix, called the Bourne Shell. When Bash was developed ten years later as an improvement on the Bourne shell, the pun was too good to pass up.

Sorry...but how can we blame the kernel for not being compatible with a 550 Nvidia driver that's not in our repositories? That's not a kernel panic, just a build failure, but I know cutting and pasting real kernel "oopsies" can be a problem.

I think everyone should remove unused wi-fi DKMS drivers. They really slow down any kernel update, for no reason. The 6.14 Liquorix kernel seems have much improved internal Realtek drivers, for those that are wondering what good it is.

For those that don't want to provide any QSI or system information--using a third-party driver that won't build on a new kernel is something we wasted time discovering.

Agree No "One" is to blame. yet question would come in resort to - "why Release" an Update of Program selections of files and or kernel release. Specially if it was not Tested Correctly prior release to general update desktop process.

Seeing Revoke or removed such from the update program after its pop to update desktop wide. This is no different from other Kernel Specially releases of how MX outputs via such broad Updates as to how many fail as to how many succeed in update process. With new problems generated.
Sorry to express and others also have expressed the same.. The Soup crappers. No QSI no Fix support is only to tarnish the MX reputation. Have not some to see and consider value to use of MX Distro Release. as it slips from all time #1 distro to now 2nd and what next. 3rd or 4th fall outs.

would a thought to consider. under the users group.n.Blog users.

why not create a Listing post a Form to fill or even just check " New Release " Kernel or update #. - as to "Update release" with users that worked and those that did not. check box be simple yad or zenity simple.

Same with or the all similar process on this particular board as too - Problems and checking the "Solved" Status.
would not an idea to - Problem found ...abc and Solution correction as to "What was done to correct or fix some abnormality in cause of such issue.

Such DB would prevent endless searching and could help any one searching for a problem they .. And this could behold even New Users to Linux as too " I'm experiencing such issue" to list thru Problems and Solved listings as to ..
yes this fits my issue I can resort to this "Solved" state and try such process to fix their issue.

So when users come to the forums they can find a solution or information they may " Learn By " which might provide an immediate answer to try and rectify their issue.
such removing problematic people skills and or seeing constant bold issue not being address directly and an incorrect toss to solution be cast as it is by current to some supporters.

Again, a dkms build failure of a deprecrated DKMS package, that you don't even use, is not a kernel panic. A kernel panic is something you see in the dmesg output, and it provides a memory trace for debugging.

My instance did report a kernel panic. I don't have booting splashes and stuff.

Do you expect us to test every DKMS package on Earth? We test the ones in the MX AHS repository. And you can always reboot to the former working kernel, and disable the automatic Liquorix updates.

I think this is sufficient. Plus, no one can really test every hardware combination under the sun. No one just has the resources to be able to provide as many platforms to test on. And, so far, as long as everyone works together, those special situations get resolved.

Currently, I am running the Liquorix 6.14.1-1 as it was coming from the update. Aside of this one, I still have the xanmod main (6.13) and LTS (6.12) kernels installed, so at least one of them is still running if one fails (and it is clear that I cannot expect the MX team to test DKMS changes against the xanmod kernels as they are not part of MX). So far, on the positive side, for the first time, I do not hear the fan kicking in when playing youtube videos when plugged in (does not happen on battery), and the temperatures are not really high (as to be expected with 2-3% CPU load).

Yes, the fewer .dkms files that need to be automatically rebuilt for the kernel, the fewer potential compilation issues there are when installing a new kernel. However, with some components like Nvidia GPUs and Wi-Fi, there is often no other choice. Therefore, in these cases, it is best to only use the versions present in the MX repositories.

The 6.14 Liquorix kernel provides much improved internal drivers for all the Realtek chipsets except 8814AU, which will be added in 6.15. So those DKMS packages are being updated to not build on 6.14. There's a pretty easy way to get the 6.15 drivers on pretty much any older kernel by downloading. making, and installing rtw88-dkms and rtw89-dkms from morrownd's Github. The drivers built in just a few seconds on my machine, which is much faster than the set of old rtl DKMS drivers we ship.

I'd like to give a try to those files you mention, sadly can't find those on github... can you link those or giving a url to them? :p

Hi @Stevo ,

"Again, a dkms build failure of a deprecrated DKMS package, that you don't even use, is not a kernel panic. A kernel panic is something you see in the dmesg output, and it provides a memory trace for debugging."

"A kernel panic is something you see in the dmesg output, and it provides a memory trace for debugging."
OK. Better phrasing: The failed boot had something about "kernel panic" as screen output.
I was claiming nothing. I know nothing.

"...deprecated DKMS package that you don't even use,"
Even? I didn't officially ask for them to be in there.
... Anyway, I could remove the offending packages and try out 6.14.1-1, if I knew how, or not.
My habit is to let the MX provided kernels install, and not complain.

Thanks tonnes!

Jim

Error! Bad return status for module build on kernel: 6.14.1-1-liquorix-amd64 (x86_64)
Consult /var/lib/dkms/nvidia-current/550.144.03/build/make.log for more information.

While I no longer have any issues I am curious about your post and respect your great knowledge.

Are you referring to my computer or someone else's?

There issues come down to: 1) In my case I don't use Nvidia since I built my computer with AMD hardware to try to ovoid any Nvidia issues that are reported all over the Internet. I have no knowledge of Nvidia issues since I don't use Nvidia hardware. 2) My computer has never lied to me before and I have no reason to believe that is wrong when my monitor said kernel panic.

You recommend that "I think everyone should remove unused wi-fi DKMS drivers". How would this be accomplished?

Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge Stevo. :number1:

Take a look at MX Cleanup in MX Tools. In it's Removal tool section the "Remove unused WiFi drivers" button.

Bear in mind that back in the 1970s, text methods were the only methods to operate computers. Even today modern Linuxes like MX are still designed to work like those ancient servers were, with an added graphics layer applied on top. We've come a long way in terms of speed, performance, and user interfaces like the Windows 95 start button or Apple's trash bin that have shaped the way we think about how a modern desktop should look and feel. Performance is important here because drawing graphics is computationally expensive, while text is relatively computationally cheap. Despite these advances, the low-level UNIX-like architecture is still there and shells are not going to go away any time soon.

These here: https://github.com/lwfinger/rtw88 Says it works well on 5.4+ kernels.

You don't need to go through the steps about creating a key and enrolling a key in the UEFI on MX, because we don't use Secure Boot. Basically, it's just

Code: Select all

make
sudo make install
You can also just download the .zip of the code instead of using git.

If you're using the out-of-kernel DKMS Realtek drivers we ship with MX, you should remove those before running "sudo make install", so two drivers don't try grabbing the wi-fi.

He got the two of us confused. I gently tried to straighten that out. That didn't seem to work.
