Updating Brave  [Solved]

Posted: Fri Sep 15, 2023 1:06 pm
by Leo
Since I started using the Brave browser, the updates came through Synaptic. All of a sudden, I've got an update button in the upper right that says "Update", but wants me to download and re-install. The Package manager won't re-install it, giving errors. Does this seem right to you, or am I just being paranoid?

Thanks for your time...

We need your computer’s complete profile before we can proceed, so you need to post the output from the QSI utility. The Quick System Info (QSI) utility is located in MX Tools and its output is automatically formatted for use here in the forum. Run the QSI utility, click “Copy for Forum” at the bottom and then just paste it here in your thread.

It looks like the latest brave release was yesterday, so it has not been updated in the repos yet. (Yes, that is the preferred method of updating. ) I am sure it will be a day or two and it will be up.

Not sure when Brave started that little update message, today was the first time I have seen it, but it is on my mx21 and my mx23 which I installed Brave on yesterday ;-/

I've had it for a few days now, but I'll just be patient, I guess.

Thanks again...

I did notice the version on my mx23 looked like it was right with the latest update, but my mx21 machines are behind a version.

For what it's worth, on my MX 21 the latest Brave is version 1.58.124. If I remember correctly, that's the same as on MX 23. You may try going to Brave settings, call up the about Brave page and check whether it says there something like "almost done" - in which case you need to click RELOAD. Might be that the browser upgraded while it was running. Until recently, in that case when you were surfing it would suddenly pop up a request to restart Brave, and if you didn't it wouldn't let you go on opening new pages. but they seemed to have dropped that, which is good as it was pretty annoying.

That aside, I have to admit (and I don't really like doing it because it's Chrome-based, after all) that Brave is a LOT faster in terms of rendering pages and stuff than Firefox or my favorite, Firefox-based Librewolf. This becomes very noticeable when used in Virtualbox. From everything I've been able to read, it seems Brave on the whole is not as intrusive as other Chrome variants; then again, I'm not sure that's saying much.

Ya, I rarely use Brave - only if something doesnt load in FF really, I just cant get away from the fact it is google based engine ;-/

Just to confirm that - at any rate on my machine - the Brave versions on MX 21 and MX 23 are identical, both are 1.58.124.

@CharlesV And there's the added thing about some addons being blocked by Google which Firefox has no problems with, like Worldwide Radio and VideoDownload Helper which on Chrome browsers just won't install. Easy Youtube Video DL? I still think it's probably the best (and very well maintained) downloader, but Chrome hates it so you can't have it. Google, in the early days, used to run with the motto "Don't Be Evil". Now it's more like "Don't Be Free".

Yup.. and NOW google has changed it all again. Now we have "enhanced Ad blocking" or 'Topics ' and Google is deciding how and what will be blocked.... hmmm... looks to me like the fox in IN the hen house and seriously making up some new rules!

Will pass :-)

Probably for Google the only valid "Topic" is how can we extract even more data from those dumb idiots who think our "services" are for their benefit.

Remember when people actually - wait for it - used books? Those chunky, analog things that don't have TOS, or log every turn of the page, or keep endless files listing the exact moment your eyes focus on which para, and how long you spend on it? In those days you saw people reading - reading! - on buses and trains and in the most unlikely places, including parks and libraries and living rooms. And nobody thought that was weird. Bizarre, right? And not a single one of those offline gadgets ever told us what we may or may not read, nor started data mining the second one opened it. People had some, what's that word, privacy? Go figure ...

My version is 1.56.11. Still won't update.

MXPackage manager shows this when I try to reinstall:

Code: Select all

E: Repository 'https://brave-browser-apt-release.s3.brave.com buster InRelease' changed its 'Origin' value from '. buster' to 'Brave Software'
E: Repository 'https://brave-browser-apt-release.s3.brave.com buster InRelease' changed its 'Label' value from '. buster' to 'Brave Browser'
Never had the browser want me to reinstall outside of the Package manager before. Just made me go "Hmm".

Should I reinstall their way, or keep waiting?

I saw the update come through the MX repo's . Might just go to the repo and see what version you find there. ( MX Package Installer )

1.56.11
Synaptic shows it as the latest version...

Speculating only, did Debian buster quit supporting brave-browser and the MX devs added it directly from "Brave Software" perhaps?
In MX-21 Xfce Buster, the label is "brave-browser".
And the origin is Buster – I think???
And I have: Installed: 1.58.127

Re: Updating Brave

Posted: Tue Sep 19, 2023 3:52 pm

For me on mx19, with the brave repo OFF ...
I get
Synaptic = 1.51.118
MX Installer says "latest" but and its set to the one I have installed' (1.51.118)

if I turn the Brave Rep ON, then I have
Synaptic = 1.56.127
MX Installer says "latest" but and its set to the one I have installed' (1.51.118)

And if I do apt list brave* with the brave repo on, then I show:

Code: Select all

$ apt list brave*
Listing... Done
brave-browser/buster 1.58.127 amd64 [upgradable from: 1.51.118]
brave-keyring/buster 1.16 all [upgradable from: 1.14]
So, from what I can tell, you are going to have to enable the Brave repo on mx19 to get the latest Brave.

I remember a while back being told during a routine update that the Brave rep had changed, and as I recall it, I just accepted the change, and things proceeded as normal. Didn't have to go to synaptic or anywhere else to actively change to a new Brave repo. My current version is 1.58.127 which is the most current one as far as I can tell.

Yep, 1.58.127 is latest stable release, asof: 2023/09/20

You can always check for the latest stable release using this github redirected url: https://github.com/brave/brave-browser/releases/latest ;)

In brave browser, check with protocol-uri:

Aye they changed that repo a little while back. Mine switched automatically on mx21 as I recall. If your doesnt, then you can try removing and reloading the repo according to their new instructions.

Worked on my Dell 6440, but not on Dell 755(info below). ?
You should try removing the brave repo in MX repo Manager, then update and try to do the install from the MX Package Installer. If that still fails, then possibly go to the brave website and follow their instructions.

OK I see others are having the same problem.
I will wait for it to be resolved as well.

Just a note, but isn't post #17, if not accepted at the time, the probable cause of the issue,
and doesn't it appear as though post #22 was the solution if it wasn't accepted as in post # 17.

The solution in MX 19 is to open the repo manager and go to individual sources and uncheck the Brave browser repo.
Then go to MX package installer and install Brave from there. This time it will find the right repository for Brave. It should install fine.
I am just confirming that what Charles V said worked for me in MX 19.

I saw that, did you first have to uninstall Brave before any of this - not of concern, I'm fine - - just curious.
Also, because post #22 uninstalled then reinstalled.
And I meant to say that I was/am using MX-21 Xfce.
Good day!
