Hello,
Thanks in advance for any help or feedback, it is greatly appreciated. I hope I can help some myself down the road.
Today I installed Google Earth, all seemed to go without issue except that the view area is cropped. I noticed that I can move around in that area but it is too small to be of any use.

I have posted on Google Earth Community site as well.

Google Earth has been known to have problems with Intel graphics.

I've seen that happen before several years ago. I think it was on 4.19 or earlier kernel that didn't have proper AMD Radeon support. I had to use the "nomodeset" boot parameter to fix it but that caused problems with other things.
I also remember Google Earth not working properly with Xfce compositor or compton, I don't remember which. You could try disabling compositing or change compositors and see what happens.

Hello,
I have used the MX Package Installer, GDeb, Synaptic, same results.
I believe Stevo is correct that it is an issue with the intel graphics
thanks for info, I will keep looking for solution.

Hello,
Finally found a support post that describes the issue I am seeing.
https://support.google.com/earth/thread ... size?hl=en
Does anyone know if can update the drivers for the Intel Graphics I have. It is beyond my skill/knowledge level.
Thanks

You can, I would suggest a couple of things first though.
1) Run mx Tweak and go to the Other tab. Make sure Use Intel driver instead of default... is checked. If not, then check it, reboot and test again.
2) In the same MX Tweak app, go to the compositor tab and change VBlank. If it is on default, try it on glx. (And if on glx already, then try default or none.) Again, reboot and test.
If neither of those work, then I would update to the 6.2.14 liqiuorx kernel. I found that that kernel ran much better on all of my computers, including the older ones. You will have to add the mx ahs repo, then update and then add the 6.2.14 kernel. You may have to adjust some drivers, but it was seriously worth it for me.
And the ahs repo will bring in another full firmware code set including i915.

Hello Charles,
Thanks for the detailed post. I tried the tweaks, one at time, rebooted and tested. Had no luck there, in a few cases actual lost view window in GE totally. If it would be useful I can step thru each option and document the results.
I will try adding MX AHS Repo and update Kernel tomorrow and get back to you with results.
Thanks Again!

Interesting ... so, both my laptops close to yours I have
Compositor: Xfwm
Vblank: glx
On my HP (2018) I had installed firmware-codes as of march 23 I believe, the Dell I have not. , but both are on ahs so they should be on the latest.
And both run GE no issue. (I will put a fresh mx21 on my dell today and test it bare and see what i can find out. )
Try running GE from a terminal and see if you get any error messages. My path and a good command line is:
Code: Select all
/opt/google/earth/pro/google-earth-pro %f

Hello,
I am still very much a beginner to Linux, I did not see anything in the terminal and not sure how make it show output either.
That being said, I will follow any instructions, articles suggested. I know it is painful sometimes for all of you that are advanced/knowledgeable to deal with us new-bees.
The sharing of your patience, knowledge and experience is GREATLY APPRECIATED. I hope to be able to play it forward in some way myself.
Thanks

No worries! everyone has to learn at some point :-)
If you open a terminal, and then run that command to launch / start google earth, you would see any messages in that same terminal window. (it may not show anything, but typically it will IF there is anything to display.)
And, when you say
same results, small functional view window.
Do you mean the Google earth window is really small, but it all seems to be working fine?
__ or
Do you mean there is a small window that opens, with nothing in it?

It does not display anything in terminal after the launch command.
Small Functional Window:
CORRECT --> Do you mean the Google earth window is really small, but it all seems to be working fine?
Do not want to muddy water her but I am also trying to get Spotify to work too.
I did notice that it did give some feedback in Terminal when I launched it.
May or may not be relevant or useful.

So, the closest machine I have to yours is this HP (10/2011 ) , the intel chip is different, but I tossed a fresh MX21.3 onboard and updated only the repos - then installed GE.
No issues, normal window etc.
I did look into the .config folder and copied out the GoogleEarthPro.conf that was sitting in the Google folder. (I have done nothing other than fire up GE on it, so it is full defaults. Notice, in that file ( attached real file name is GoogleEarthPro.conf ) are these lines in the [General] section.

All the people using Google Earth successfully with Intel Graphics have the i915 driver in the top position but
loaded: modesetting on the x11 server line.
I would try getting your machine to use modesetting by adding a boot code.
Reboot the machine. At the grub screen press the
e key to edit the boot line (it will only affect this one boot so it's safe).
The line you're looking for will have
quiet splash near the end of it. Add
i915.modeset=1 on that line after the
quiet splash.
Press F10 to boot.
If you're lucky, this will let Google Earth run properly, and you can use the MX Boot Options applet to add that boot code permanently.

Charles V,
I was finally able to locate config file you referencing. The specific lines you highlighted are the same ...

lastLeft=36
lastTop=30
lastWidth=960
Not sure what else to look at in file.

Hello timkb4cq,
First thanks for responding. I was able to locate the quiet splash line and add the i915 text as you instructed. It did not seem to make a difference, the view window was still small.
I am going to try again to dbl check my work.
Any other ideas.

Your screenshot is showing an an underscore ( _ ) right after the 1.
That could make it not work (unless that's the cursor, in which case it looks right - hard to tell in a screenshot).
It would be interesting to look at the Graphics section of QSI after booting with that boot code to see if it actually did force modesetting.

No, the boot code didn't force modesetting.
If you still have that Intel box set in MX Tweak it could be overriding the boot code. If not, I don't know why it didn't.

VMX is Virtual Machine Extensions.
If you want to run virtual machines with KVM, QMEU, or VirtualBox you should turn this on in the BIOS.
But it should have no effect except in relation to that use case.

Oh ok, I am a loss. This laptop has been the most troublesome Linux conversion that I have ever had. Not sure why.

Just go in the BIOS and flick the switch for virtual machines or KVM or what it might be called.

Hello,
So I edited /etc/default/grub, adding i915.modeset=1, then update-grub
When I reboot I see the addition in GRUB when I hit e
System boots fine but I see no change in Graphics section of QSI, Google Earth still has small but functional view window.
Thoughts?

Full QSI please. That shows the kernel load settings etc.

Not sure if any of this will be of help, but on my HP same vintage as yours, I had an issue at one point with loading the 6.0 and 6.1 kernels, and the issue was somehow memory / video related.
I tried each of these lines on kernel load separately like you are supposed to do, but nothing changed it. Out of desperation, I tried ALL of them on the kernel load line and it worked. No clue why and removing any one of them the system froze again. ( None of these were needed on the 6.2 kernel and later btw!)
The part of interest was that I was playing around in memory and video both... You can look up what each one is supposed to do, but maybe doing something like this would force it to use video differently and change what is going on?

If that is correct, where do I insert this in the existing text?

I personally, use MX Boot Options - kernel Parameters edit box
And the complete line I used from my notes was :

and still it is using the i915 driver. Lets add that back in as Tim suggested
Code: Select all
quiet splash iommu=calgary intel_iommu=on intel_iommu=igfx_off vesa=0 i915.modeset-1
and then another QSI please.

Also, lets make sure there is nothing resetting that driver...
Code: Select all
grep -r intel /etc/X11/xorg.conf* /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf*
If it shows any files, then rename those and restart.

Hello,
Sweatness!!!!!!!!!!
Sweatness.png
First I renamed /etc/X11/xorg.conf to xorg_conf.bak which was returned by the grep search
Code: Select all
grep -r intel /etc/X11/xorg.conf* /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf*
So I edited /etc/default/grub, adding the following after quiet splash
Code: Select all
iommu=calgary intel_iommu=on intel_iommu=igfx_off vesa=0
Code: Select all

Excellent!! Most likely it was that xorg.conf was forcing the intel driver to be reloaded!
If you want to experiment a little more, you can start attempting to unload those grub additions. But if your all good with everything.. I woudl say run it a while and see how it all works out!!
