MX Linux INstall from Live version

I have the xfce version on USB, it opens the live version of MX21.
When I click the Install Mx Linux option, it does nothing but circle those flower petals for extreme lengths of time.
I just give up trying, and press the power button to shut down, and go back to Leap to get some things done.

I have tried to install several times. NO SUCCESS.

SYSTEM:
I Have an older 64bit HP Compaq DC7700 CMT, with three HDD's, Main drive is WIndows 10 and WIndows 7.PLUS a version of Opensuse Leap 15.3 with KDE
A 2nd HDD has nothing but Another version of Opensuse Leap 15.3 with xfce DE.

I have a third 160G drive I am trying to install MX on. IT is empty. I have pre-formatted it 'unalocaled', fat32. vfat etc, again NO success regardless of the format.

What can I do to get it past that flower that just spins for hours on end?

I there an iso for MX that is direct install, without having go through the live version off the USB stick to install? IF SO, WHERE IS IT?

The live isos are the only isos.

Perhaps posting the quick system info while running live would be good

And also the /var/log/minstall.log file which may tell us where it’s jamming up.

You could, maybe, rsync the running live / directory to the / of an ext4 partition on the drive you want to use excluding the /live directory (add /live to the list of what's not rsynced), then manage your own installed /etc/fstab and install a boot loader. I haven't tried this but I'm thinking it might work. It would be about an 8 GB transfer. Follow the rsync method noted in the following link:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/rs ... tem_backup
Even if it doesn't work, it won't do any harm unless you rsync to the wrong destination.

However, if you can't start the installer there may likely be something wrong with your live-usb. You may get useful feedback by running the minstall command from the commandline:

Code: Select all

sudo minstall
You'll get a lot of screen output even when it's working correctly.

OK, Thanks folks,
I will try @dolphin_oracle's thing tomorrow evening. To late tonight. That live version is a slow turtle to work with.
@figuero's may be well above my head to try, but worth reading through again.

If there's such an option in Bios: Change sata mode to Ahci (from Raid) save and exit. (also disable secure boot if there is)

(Before changing to Ahci in Bios: Open Regedit in Windows and make 2 simple changes to not make it unbootable)

Meanwhile: minstall.log will be there after you try/start installation, it's normal that there were nothing before it.

The bios on that old HP Compaq doesn’t have the option to sata to Ahci.

What format should the HDD I am trying to put MX on? Fat32, xfs, an ext?

What was in the partial miinstall above was KDE, I will put the whisker on the USB stick, and work from there.

Also, the /var/log/minstall was not there because for some reason the persistence wasn’t there to save it.

Yes, one pata and 2 sata drives on the system.
I am hoping to put MX on the empty SATA drive.

Let me see if the xfce version I just put on the stick with Rufus & persistence will save things.
If so, I can/will start another post if you want.

while running live, open gparted and see if gparted lists the pata drive, as well as the output of this:

Code: Select all

lsblk -T -bJo TYPE,NAME,PATH,UUID,ROTA,DISC-GRAN,SIZE,PHY-SEC,PTTYPE,PARTTYPENAME,FSTYPE,LABEL,MODEL,PARTFLAGS

Gaprted just runs it's worm without completing the list.
output for the code you provided is this

/dev/sda is the PATA drive. /dev/sdb is the WIndows drive(sata) /dev/sdc is the blank sata drive/
So I am assuming the live version recognizes the pata drive somehow.

Hope this helps. the KDE version was way faster!

my first thought is to disconnect that PATA drive and try an install that way.

the fact that gparted doesn't finish listing devices is probably related to why partprobe fails to complete.

Kind of what I thought you, or someone else would suggest.
If I didn’t that, I may not be able to get Grub2 back like it is now!
But…. May be worth a try anyway.
I WILL put the KDE version back on the usb stick. It seems to work better as ‘live’ system. Took 3 or more minutes fir Firefox to open under the xfce ‘live’ version.

Thanks for all your responses & input!

And what happens if my pata drive won’t boot IF I get MX installed?

Call this one somewhat solved!
Because I GIVE UP!
There are other distros out there that won’t give the problems I am having ANY version(fluxbix) installed to a blank hard drive.

Sitting here for over an hour watching that silly flower whirl around. Ridiculous!

And the partition managers hang up at 33%, more ridiculousness.

BTW, the PATA drive was disconnected for a xfce and a KDE install of MX.
So, the PATA is not the problem! Probably this old slow system, which I will not allow to burn up waiting for something to happen with the MX installerl
OR, It could be in the latest iso's.
I don't know if it is worth trying a respin version, or not.

Thanks to all responders for your patience.

I have been waiting for a resolution to this topic. I share your disapointment in the computing arena .

This is just a suggestion, why not try using MX as a live usb system for a while just to check it out. If you like it then save your changes by using MX Snapshot and redo the usb.

It does not take long to Snapshot and have an updated system. As many times as you like, and if the new version has a problem then revert to the previous iteration. That is how I started using MX.

It is because of MX Snapshot that I got a handle on tweaking the os exactly how I like.

Good luck and have fun most of all,

Vektor

FWIW I would try something with an older kernel, or maybe a non-debian kernel. antiX ships with a 4.9 and a 5.10 kernel on the same live-usb if you get the 64 bit full version, and instead of debian kernels antiX compiles theirs from kernel.org directly.

I tried both the modern & legacy kernels for antiX in the 64 bit full version.
Modern acted same as MX, trying to install just spun the ‘gathering information’ endlessly.
Restarted the live USB & selected the ‘legacy’. Clicked the installer, & all went well WITH THE INSTALL!
BUT when I tried to run it, it got stuck on some kind of I/O error that took 8 minutes per line to continue on.
GOT TIRED OF WAITING, so I shutdown, opened gparted in openSuse leap and cleared the drive.

I have had ldme-5, Mint, & of course OpenSuse Leap 15.3 on that drive within the last week. NO PROBLEMS with install, NO PROBLEM with boot on any of them.
I can only surmise there is something about my system that causes a problem with both antiX & MX.

Gonna look elsewhere for a lightweight distro, and keep trying,

Thanks for all your input and advice & help.
