FWIW I would try something with an older kernel, or maybe a non-debian kernel. antiX ships with a 4.9 and a 5.10 kernel on the same live-usb if you get the 64 bit full version, and instead of debian kernels antiX compiles theirs from kernel.org directly.

FYI: mx "test" repo is not the same thing as debian testing repo.

I tried both the modern & legacy kernels for antiX in the 64 bit full version.
Modern acted same as MX, trying to install just spun the ‘gathering information’ endlessly.
Restarted the live USB & selected the ‘legacy’. Clicked the installer, & all went well WITH THE INSTALL!
BUT when I tried to run it, it got stuck on some kind of I/O error that took 8 minutes per line to continue on.
GOT TIRED OF WAITING, so I shutdown, opened gparted in openSuse leap and cleared the drive.

I have had ldme-5, Mint, & of course OpenSuse Leap 15.3 on that drive within the last week. NO PROBLEMS with install, NO PROBLEM with boot on any of them.
I can only surmise there is something about my system that causes a problem with both antiX & MX.

Gonna look elsewhere for a lightweight distro, and keep trying,

Thanks for all your input and advice & help.
