MX-21 installation freezes after initial set-up

Hey there!
I have a big problem with installing MX-21 on my newly built PC.
Sofar I use MX-19 on my notebook without any problem and therefore wanted to use the latest version of it on my new PC.
As for my PC system:
Motherboard: ASUS TUF Gaming B550M-PLUS
Bios Version: 2423 x64 08-10-2021
Prozessor: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X
RAM 32GB
Graficscard: GeForce GTX275 noname brand
On this new PC I want to do a clean install of only MX-21.
What did I do sofar?
I changed the battery on the motherboard as I read that not saving the settings in Bios could be caused by a bad battery. Together with changing the battery I also rest the CMOS.
After this I tried several settings in the Bios so that I could install MX-21. Unfortunately without any success. The best I could get was a freez of the system after the initial set-up screen where it says: "Welcome to MX-21" and where I could choose my language, keyboard layout and time zone. After this initial settings and starting to install MX-21 it shows the next screen where it says something about MX-21 and a couple of dots underneath. On this screen the system freezes and the keyboard and mouse are deactivated.
The very same result I get, doesn't matter what settings I chose in the BIOS.
I tried a couple of combinations as for example but not exclusively:
- For every try -> Fast boot disable.
- Boot Device Control to "UEFI and Legacy"
- The other three "Boot from" options set to "UEFI only"
- OS Type set to "Other OS"
- Boot Option #1 "UEFI: Intenso Alu Line"
- Boot Option #2 "Intenso Alu Line"
- After those setting I did a "Save Changes and Reset" when leaving the Bios.
Those initial settings I then tried with other combinations and changes in the settings as for example:
- Using the option in Bios for "Boot Override -> UEFI: Intenso Alu Line
- Or changing the "Boot from" options to "Legacy only" or "Ignore"
- Or changing the OS Type to "Windows UEFI mode" and restoring the standard Key Management
Those activities in Bios lead to three different "apparences" of the initial installation screen of MX-21
In some of the approaches I booted to a UEFI welcome screen. In others it even said UEFI Secure Boot (in the combination with OS type set to "Windows UEFI mode") or just showed the entry for installing "MX-21 x64 (October 20, 2021).
As for the version of MX-21 I tried both the MX-21_ahs_x64 and the MX-21_x64 wiht always the same outcome which had been either a straight reboot, not even entering the initial set-up/installation screen, or a freez after setting-up the language, keyboard lay-out and time zone with the keyboard and mouse being deactivated.
Any and all help is very much appreciated.
cheers,
Johannes

On live session : "Quick System Info" from Menu.
If there's such an option and especially if it's and SSD: Change sata mode to Ahci in Bios. Save and exit.
(If you have Windows, too
first open Regedit before that and do this not to make it unbootable.)
And, if it's a Uefi pc:
Prepare the usb stick with GPT - Uefi mode. (Otherwise it boots and installs but the installed system doesn't boot due to Grub issues). Then install with that.

Many thanks for the quick reply. Unfortunately I cannot even get into a live session. The "screen" to which I get to is the black one where one can do the very basic first setting for language, keyboard layout and time zone and then start into the live session, installation prozess. I mean, I do not get to the live desktop and therefore don't know how I can provide a "Quick System Info".
For creating the USB-stick I used the provided MX Live Usb Maker in the advanced advanced settings and ticked the box for "GPT-Partitiontable".

Ah, ok. When you were able to access the
Welcome Screen have you tried any boot options?
You can press E then type
after ...
quiet splasht
then hit F10 to go on boot.

As in one video I saw, I tried the boot-option "from=usb" but the outcome had been the same with a frozen screen and the keyboard and mouse disabled.
Your other suggestion I will try and report back with the result.

Okay, I, once again, created the usb-stick anew using the MX Live USB Maker. As for the .iso I used the MX-21_ahs_x64 and I made sure to tick the box for GPT option.
The Bios setting had been:
- Boot Device Control "UEFI and Legacy OPROM"
- Boot from Network Devices/Storage Devices/PCI-E/PCI Expansion Devices all set to "UEFI only"
- Secure Boot - OS Type set to "Other OS"
- Boot Option #1 set to "UEFI: Intenso Alu Line, Partition 2"
- Boot Option #2 set to "Intenso Alu Line"
And then used the option "UEFI: Intenso Alu Line, Partition2" from "Boot Override" to save and reboot out of Bios.
The next what I then saw was a "Welcome to GRUB!" line on the screen before being transvered to the "Welcome to MX-21_ahs (Wildflower)!" screen.
Here I then set my language, keyboard and timezone before highlighting the "MX-21 ahs x64 (November 22, 2021) entry and hitting "e".
Then I put the "nomodeset" like said in the line which says in total: "linux /antiX/${kernel} quiet splasht nosplash $@" so it finally said: "linux /antiX/${kernel} quiet splasht nomodeset nosplash $@" and had hit F10.
This resulted in a reboot.
Afte the reboot, without entering Bios, I came out at the Syslinux "MX-21 ahs x64 (Novembber 22, 2021)" screen, so I "Switch to Grub Bootloader", set my language, keyboard and time zone again, highlighted the MX-21 line and hitted "e".
Then I had put the "nomodeset" at: "linux /antiX/${kernel} quiet splasht nosplash nomodeset $@" and pushed F10.
This, as well, resulted in a reboot.
Besides that I check the entry for the "SATA Configuration" and made sure it is set to "AHCI" for the "SATA Mode".

If it was just a black screen or so then it would be normal or it would be probably due to graphics card.
But since it is
Yoshio wrote: Sat Feb 26, 2022 1:23 pm...resulted in a reboot.
that must be something else: Bios etc.. But this time you had already reset that to factory defaults ..

If you like, you can try this:
Boot that usb with the other pc. Then while on live session install the 5.16 kernel (for it's the newest) from Popular Apps tab in "MX Package Installer".
Then: "MX RemasterCC" from Menu.
Finally: "MX Live Usb Kernel Updater".

Yoshio wrote: Sat Feb 26, 2022 10:14 am...After those setting I did a "Save Changes and Reset" when leaving the Bios.
In fact, just do this:
Reset to defaults ("Load Setup Defaults" or so) then save changes.
Then just change the secure boot to disabled and change to ahci,
then "save & exit".
If still not: Have a look if there's an upgrade available. (by Asus after 08-10-2021)

Actually it wasn't set to factory defaults so I did that and to leave the Bios I used then the "Save Changes and Reset" option.
After a reboot I saw at the screen which showed the following informations:
American Megatrends
ASUS TUF Gaming B550M_Plus ACPI Bios Revison 2423
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X 6-Core Processor
Speed: 3700MHz
Total Memory: 32768MB (DDR4-2666)
USB Devices total: 2 Drives, 2 Keyboards, 1 Mouse, 1 Hub
USB Drive #0: Intenso Alu Line
USB Drive '1: Intenso
Detected Devices...
Intenso Alu LIne
Intenso
SATA6G_1: Samsung SSD 870 QVO 2TB
M.2_2: Kingston SNVS500G
The VGA card is not supported by UEFI driver.
CSM settings have been changed for better compatibility.
For further adjustments, press [F1] to enter Bios setup.
If no adujstments needed, press [F2] to confirm the current settings and enter OS directly.
I then carried on by pressing F2 which brought me back to the "Welcome to MX-21_ahs (Wildflower)!" screen.
What does confuse but not surprises me a bit on the above quoted screen is the entry for the VGA card as it is old being a GeForce GTX275 from one of my old computers. My idea with the graphics card is to reuse it till the prices for a new card a back down to a more affordable level.
What iritates me in the above quote are the entries for the USB Devices as there are currently two external hard drives attached, one USB stick - being the MX-21 live usb stick, one keyboard and one mouse.
So, back at the Welcome screen of MX-21, first I got to the Syslinux and therefore changed to the GRUB, I then did everything as before and made the line look like this: "linux /antiX/${kernel} quiet splasht nosplash nomodeset $@".
This resulted then in getting me to the next screen which says:
MX 21_ahs (Wildflower)
.......
<Alt-F1> Den Bootprozess ansehen <Alt-F10> Hierher zurückkehren
at which the systems freezes again and the keyboard and mouse are deactivated.

I use nearly the same board. Mine is a B450-F and settings are nearly identical. My gfx card is a Nvidia GTX 1050 Ti.
Also -> Boot from Network Devices/Storage Devices/PCI-E/PCI Expansion Devices all set to "UEFI only" or "Legacy only". Mine works for either.
I think its your USB stick that you're using. Can you try a different USB stick and create a different Live USB stick and boot from a different USB stick with the default Grub bootloader? Meaning don't use nomodeset. I did not change anything on Grub bootloader line.

It may in fact be attributable to that old graphics card. Is it possible for you to remove the graphics card and then try the install?
I too have had some difficulties installing MX21 (KDE and XFCE) with the system freezing during or even shortly after installation. I overcome the issues but with so many variable attempts I'm afraid I've lost track of exactly which solution worked in the end. That said, I think it well might be something to do with kernels one chooses and with your set up being new(ish) I wonder if you should (as has been posted in this thread) try the AHS kernel. You might also try using a different method of burning your liveusb (not that I am saying there's anything wrong with the MXLive usb tool) but Ventoy is a useful tool that's been discussed in the forum before and that might help you out.
Again, I am inclined to think your graphics card is not working happily with the installation routines and if you can bypass it (even temporarily) you may find the nouveau drivers will work (I'm assuming a mismatch here with Nvidia but I may be wrong). Good luck.

Last up-date for today and many thanks to all of you who tried to help so far.
I got Ventoy installed on the Intenso Alu Line USB-Stick and copied the .iso onto the stick. Unfortunately it does get me or better said the final result doesn't change. It still ends up with either an immediate reboot or a freez with deactivated keyboard and mouse.
Tomorrow I will search for another USB-Stick and see if this is doing the trick!?
Again, many thanks and I will keep you all up-dated.

Okay, today I tried the whole thing again with a different USB-Stick. Unrotunately the outcome had been the very same. It either resulted in an immediate reboot or in a freez of the system. It didn't matter if I used Ventoy or setting up the USB-Stick via the MX Live USB Tool.
The only difference I could "achieve" had been the information that, when setting the BIOS entry for the OS Type to "Windows UEFI mode", I saw in a pop-up window. It said:
error: /antiX/vmlinuz has invalid signature.
error: you need to load the kernel first.
Press any key to continue...
So, still no success.
Unfortunately, as I do not have another graphics card and, at least as far as I know, there is no GPU on the motherboard, I cannot eliminate the GTX275 card from the system to see if this is the rootcause of the problem.

Do you have SecureBoot enabled? If so, can you disable SecureBoot and try again?

You said that you used the Ventoy utility to create the usb install drive. I think that you should try MX's built-in utility instead because while both Ventoy and MX's USB Creator are great utilities, occasionally there will be instances where one will work and the other one won't.
Edited because I misread the OP's first post.

First of, Secure Boot by itself cannot be deactivated directly. What can be deactivated is CSM which is responsible for all the UEFI or Legacy settings. To my understanding, once CSM is deactivated, Secure Boot can be set to "Other OS" and the Keys can be deleted. This should then be equal to deactivating Secure Boot.
Unfortunately this doesn't work for me as the status of CSM is, at every reboot or start, set back to enabled with the comment that this is necessary as the graphics card doesn't fulfill the requironments of UEFI. This is not a surprise to me, as the card is pretty old.
As for Rufus, to my understanding this is a Windows Tool?
What I did or used sofar had been the MX Live USB maker, the Ventoy and before using Ventoy I used Balena Etcher all with the same result/outcome.
The notebook I'm using currently MX-19 installed is, in theory, still dual boot with Win7 but I haven't booted into Win7 now for years. I don't know if it is still responding usable once I booted into Win7 and logged in!?

I never got a tag, but know that I do not offer support via PM, folks. Your best bet is to google or find a manual, as I have no idea how to do that anymore, it was too long ago.
Well, y'all hit lucky, I have it written down. So this is what I had to do, that is all I can offer.
Go into the Advanced Mode (F7)
Go into ‘Secure Boot’ option under the Boot section
Select Windows UEFI mode, and go into Key Management
Delete Platform Key (PK) to disable secure boot. (Note: Do not delete other keys)
Save and restart to apply settings (F10) and boot with ‘secure boot’ disabled
To restore the key go to ‘Load Default PK’ and press enter, you can reload the default key there

First of, thank You, Eadwine Rose, for your input and help.
Unfortunately the outcome or result had been the same as before with one exception but first of to what I found out, experienced:
- Due to my old graphics card CSM can not be deactivated or better said, when deactivated on the very next reboot it will be activated again as the GTX 275 doesn't support UEFI.
- As for secure boot, the setting for Windows UEFI leads to a freeze as discribed in my posts before. Setting it to "Other OS" leads either to a reboot or a freeze. Why, I don't know.
So, now one might ask but where is the new?
As I had been so frustrated with the experiences I had to made, I downloaded other Linux distros and had no success with anyone of those which I tried and which had been based on AntiX or Arch but I could boot through to the installation desktop on one which is based on Debian/Ubuntu.
As I'm still very much a beginner when it comes down to Linux, I don't know where the differences are here but for now this unfortunately means that I will have to stick with the one which I could get booted to the installation desktop.
Once again, many thanks for all the suggestions and offered help!

Yoshio, I empathise with your problem because I have to say that such issues have beset me with the latest iterations of debian/ubuntu derivates. You see, initially I had a terrible time getting MX21KDE installed from a liveusb which I had gone through all of the steps recommended here regarding burning different usbs' via differing methodologies. I still think the issue resides in graphics cards and in particularly the Nvidia drivers and how they interact with the most modern kernels. Have you tried (forgive me if you've already mentioned it as there's a bit of dialogue in this thread now) using one of the very oldest kernels?

Yoshio It's been my experience using ASUS motherboards that the quality has dropped like a rock. You either have one of the settings set wrong somewhere in the BIOS or a defective motherboard. Make sure all power settings are set to off because it causes freezes with Ryzen CPU's. If it's not that then you have the same problem I had which eventually showed up as a defective motherboard. In my case the freezing started after 11 months but I couldn't find the problem until 13 months which was conveniently for ASUS that it was out of warranty by then.
I use to like ASUS as I used them for all my computer builds, but I will never buy another ASUS product because of how I was treated by ASUS and that ASUS lied to me by falsely claiming the motherboard I had from them had RAID which it didn't have and the short life of the motherboard. I have since then use only Gigabyte motherboards and I recommend you do the same in the future.

@linexer2016 In this thread @Huckleberry Finn recommended a similar approach but going for the latest kernel. As for now, I only tried both the MX-21_ahs_x64 and the MX-21_x64 as they are provided in the download. I didn't try any older or newer kernels. The only way to give this a try is to do so on my notebook. But it might be worth a try as now the two of you recommended a somewhat similar solution.
@Mauser A defect motherboard had been and still is one of my fears as well. In the very beginning of this thread I wrote about this and what I did to somewhat check it. Unfortunately, I couldn't find a way which completely nullifies the possibility of a broken motherboard, especially if it is something not obvious. For now I flashed the Bios itself and up-dated it to the latest version and changed the CMOS battery.
For now I will give it one more try by checken for different kernels and see if this is doing the "trick". If not, I will have to install the Debian-Ubuntu "alternative" as buying a new graphics cards is out of my price range for now.

To not leave this topic here without a final sort of sum-up even with the now available MX-21.1 revision of MX-Linux I had no success. By now I'm using another distro which is an independent on. Furthermore I tried many different distros and as a summary of all that I haven't been able to find any real similarities between those which worked and those which didn't. What I think I can say is that Arch based distros don't work in my current PC configuration as none of which I tried I could get to boot into live environment. Of the independent ones the results had been mixed, some worked, some didn't. The same goes for Debian based distros.
I then tried to "specify" why some work and others not by checking the kernel but also here I couldn't find any logical connections or similarities. The distro is now running on the kernel 5.15.32-213.current. Other distros I tried also had a 5.15.XX kernel but I couldn't get them to boot into live environment with only one exception. Other kernels, be they higher or lower, didn't show any commonalities either.
What I could find had been the information about the support of the driver which I would need for my graphics card. The graphics card I have is only supported up to the nvidia driver version 340.108 and this is driver version seems to be supported only up to kernel 5.4 LTS. This makes me guess that the problem with being able to boot through to a live environment might have to do with the set-up of the Nouveau driver!?
As for now and to end this thread, I'm waiting for reasonable prices on the graphic card market and once I could buy a new card I will try again to get MX-Linux installed and running.
Many thanks for all the effort and help!

Till then (and off-topic) Why did you use these? Your card is Nvidia.

Okay, I'm back.
First of, I did try MX-21.1_x64, MX-21.1_ahs_x64 and Mx-21.1_KDE-x64. All three with the same result that after doing the initial set-up for booting into the live environment, meaning language settings, all of the froze on the next screen which I would call the "boot progress screen" with keyboard and mouse disabled. So the only option to get out of this had been a could start to reboot the machine.
Till then (and off-topic) Why did you use these? Your card is Nvidia.
radeon.si_support=0 radeon.cik_support=0 amdgpu.si_support=1 amdgpu.cik_support=1
For this I would like to be able to say that I didn't install them but as they are on the system, they might have been installed somewhat automatically as I didn't install them consciously. As You said, it doesn't make sense as my PC has a nvidia card.
Is it therefore correct to assume that I can savely uninstall the "xorg-driver-video-radeon" and "xorg-driver-video-amdgpu" package?
Now for the requested stuff, if I understood it correctly and this will be somewhat longish and without particular order!

So, since it boots fine (like Debian does with the same kernel and though most of these are live-sessions, too): it's something with the installer. You can start the installer (purposely) from terminal with:
and maybe take screenshots (photo) where it freezes . (If it was not freezing completely you could also post
/var/log/minstall.log )
I wonder what happens (just to test and if you like only, just out of curiosity) if you first install Calamares from MXPI then start it and try to install with that (

Doesn't top show what process IDs might be hogging up the system?

Can be installed MX21 in systemd mode? Maybe there is something which the installer prefers! A thought.

No systemd on live-session .

Per post #7 in this thread from the Republic of Gamers forums:
https://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.p ... it-enabled
CSM needs to be disabled for a UEFI install.
After finding this I reread the entire thread and you never mention whether you set an Administrator's password. Did you? On most modern motherboards, setting an Administrator's password is necessary to gain access to the advanced options like the ability to disable Secure Boot.

Many thanks for the many replies. I will do me best to answer them one by one.
@razor2021 - Thanks for letting me know that there is a bios up-date available. I already did one, so that shouldn't be too big of a deal to do another one. Just have to remember the single steps.
As for your second question, unfortunately not as I get stuck at the screen which "directly" shows up after the screen at which one can set language and choose between:
- Switch to Grub Bootloader
This loading screen says something like:
(Welcome to) MX-Linux
. . . . . . . .
And at the bottom something about a key combination to display something but as at that point the keyboard and mouse are already deactivated there is nothing I can do except a cold or hard start.
@j2mcgreg - No, I never set a Administrator password for my motherboard but I still can enter the advanced settings and for disabling CSM I followed the instructions which I got here in this thread. These instruction actually made it at all possible to install a Linux distro. Before finding and understanding those instruction I haven't been able to boot into any of the live environments.
@Huckleberry Finn - I will have to reread your post tomorrow morning as it is already a bit late tonight. After doing so and giving it a try I will report back here about my progress.

I think that you should at least try setting an administrator's password to see if you can then disable CSM
and Secure Boot. Secure Boot has to be disabled in order to boot MX. You can always clear the administrator's password later if you wish.

Yep, it says you can press Alt + F1 to see the flowing text (boot process). So, you can change the boot parameters beforehand: Remove the
splasht also change
splash to
nosplash : Shortly, press E on Grub and do it like
ro quiet nosplash and hit F10 to go on boot. (Then take a photo.). (Probably it gets stuck at: "waiting for /dev to be fully populated" )

You may need these steps to really disable secure boot:
https://www.technorms.com/45538/disable-enable-secure-boot-asus-motherboard-uefi-bios-utility wrote:
Step-By-Step: Make A Backup Of Existing Keys And Disable Secure Boot
- Restart your computer and enter into the BIOS utility by pressing the Asus BIOS key applicable to your system. In my case, it was DEL. Keep an eye out for instructions on the first screen. This should load up the Asus UEFI BIOS utility interface.
- Go into the Advanced Mode (F7 or any other key as specified).
- Go into the ‘Secure Boot‘ option under the Boot section.
- Ensure the proper OS Type is selected, and go into Key Management.
- Select ‘Save Secure Boot Keys‘ and press enter.
- Select the USB drive when asked to ‘Select a File System‘.
- Four key files named PK, KEK, DB, and DBX are saved to the USB.
- Delete Platform Key (PK) to disable secure boot. (Note: Do not delete other keys)
- Save and restart to apply settings (usually F10) and boot with ‘secure boot’ disabled.
Shortly, most steps , usb etc. are just to backup first. Main idea is "Delete 'Platform Key' " , Save and restart .

Off course, there is always the possibility to install MX21 on one computer and to migrate to another, as long the partition size is the same with the gparted. You can do this with an Ethernet crossover cable, or external USB drive and the help of the forum if you don't know how to do this.

Sorry, had been a bit busy over the weekend.
By now I up-dated the bios and set a admin PW. Unfortunately that didn't help to change anything.
@Huckleberry Finn - thanks for your post again. That is exactly how I did, do it and for deleting the Platform Key it works and this actually what makes it at all possible to boot, at least, in the live environments of some of the distros I tried. Unfortunately CSM always gets set back to "enabled" with the remark that this is necessary due to my graphics card.
The only bit of new information I could gain is the following:
Augenblickliche Bootparameter it says: "BOOT_IMAGE=/antiX/vmlinuz quiet nosplash nomodeset lang=de_AT kbd=at tz=Europe/Vienna
This is the point where the whole system freezes and keyboard and mouse are deactivated.
With the start parameters: "quiet" and "nosplash" I do get a reboot of the system, no freeze.
With MXPI, I guess, MX-Linux's Package Installer is meant? If so, unfortunately, I cannot get to it as I cannot boot into the live environment.
@asinoro - What You wrote in your post, that had been something I had been thinking about as well. I was wondering if this could be an option. I would have the option to install MX on an external hard drive using my old notebook and then copy this external installation over to the internal SSD of my new PC. Do You think that this is going to work?

By migrating the MX21 you have the option that you can boot first with systemd and then migrate it, it is an option that do not exist in the live medium of MX. Secondly, from schroot method of any other Linux live medium you can access the MX system and perform command to install or remove applications.
And maybe will boot ok without any problem, as long you have installed another Linux preferably Ubuntu based, that has the boot repair, and gives you also the possibility to access the MX21 through it.

If you ran the MX21 live-only off a USB stick and leave this session up, does it also freeze over time? In theory, running a live session of the USB stick is loading it all into RAM and also runs the same PC components mostly. If that does not freeze, it's puzzling to know why it continues to freeze on your main PC.

Yes, but if you applied it like that, it's
nomodeset that did the trick. And (if you say yes) it means Nouveau was unable to be loaded with MX though it was possible with same kernel on Debian ... Whatever.. If that's true, just boot to live session with nomodeset (or as you did with
nosplash), and install, then you may/may not install Nvidia Driver or 5.16 kernel etc.. (The rest is easy)
