The Log-out icon is wrong after Whisker Menu update

After the following update today, the Log-out (xfce4-session-logout) icon is wrong:

-xfce4-whiskermenu-plugin (2.4.6-1~mx19+1) to 2.5.3-1~mx19+1

I believe the icon should be 'system-log-out' but is now an improperly sized (very large) 'xfsm-logout'. The problem seems to only be with how it appears in the Whisker Menu.

I'll post an image if needed.

Indeed the case. It is looking different over here as well, used to be green IIRC (nuvola theme) and now.. it looks like this

Yep, that's it. Same thing here, regardless of theme.

Darn--I didn't and still can't make it change on my system, or a couple of different VBox systems, so I thought it would be safe to send to main for the updated translations and bugfixes.

You're still using the stock XFCE 4.14 and not the experimental 4.16, right?

Ditto....
I did a timeshift back 2 days because I thought I had botched my system. After update, it returned to the wrong icon. Should have check here first.

the icon themes are missing the new xfce icons that they are changing too.

for me its the settings icon.

updating xfce stuff into main should be on hold for a while. at least anything using their new icon stuff.

FWIW, the newer 4.16 Xfce's current icon problems are not limited to whisker menu.

4.14 here.

Looks OK here, no different than before AFAIR. Maybe an icon theme problem for those with the issue? Maybe the new Whisker menu wants icons with different names or something, or is using GTK3 icons rather than GTK2 ones? (See my neofetch info below.)

The problem at my end is with the Tango theme. I've removed most themes on my system, including Papirus, but the same problem exists with the themes I tested.

Note how wide the entry box is now due to the larger icon...

@dolphin_oracle Yep. In fact I just noticed the other 2 (totally 3 are different) but I just thought (as they still looked nice) that would be something due to version change in icon theme. (But, no, same versions with the installed one , so something else is causing similar but different icons to be used with the same icon theme & version).

Whatever, here's the original from Live Session, MX Jan. Snapshot - Xfce 4.14 :

papirus-icon-theme/now 20200201-1mx19+1 all [installed,local]

yep. Xfce is rolling out some new icons, and its causing problems. its one reason we are not going to push 4.16 out on mx19 except via the special repo we sent out for the more adventurous among us.

the whiskermenu plugin in main should probably be rolled back, if possible.

Luckily this week I've been updating my rolling distros on my PC!

I'll be careful not to update whisker until that update is pulled. Or an older version is pushed with a prefix to make it look newer.

:p

Meanwhile, this doesn't seem to be just about Whisker cause they're the same icons (switch user and lock screen) in Actions menu on panel. (But they still look nice, causing no issues) (Xfce 4.16 )

there are bound to be other hiccups.

I installed my favorite Steampunk 3D icons from Ollifri that are no longer on his account on pling! and I do not like that I am seeing these non theme icons suddenly. Glad to know I am not the only one lol! But it is annoying. This is what happens when we just update anything that pops up in the updater :-P but I changed my whisker menu log out icon by taking the original that is in my selected theme and I copied it in Root Thunar at /usr/share/icons/hicolor/48x48/actions/ and renamed the offending icon and then named MY ICON to xfsm-logout.png and it showed up correctly when I pressed my MX menu button! So it is faster and easier than you would think to fix that but you DO have to KNOW where to find the offending icon which I did not and had to hunt for it. hicolor is the system wide default icon set when no other icon set is present. So this will NOT be the only icon you may have to manually tweak with any subsequent updates. For now, as suggested, lock your whisker menu at the current and do not update yet or just find those offending icons one by one and slowly rebuild your own. One thing that almost hung me up was that MY icon theme uses .SVG and the offending icon in hicolor/48x48/actions is .png. So when I try to resize the svg icon to 48x48 and save as a png, mirage complained it is not a supported format! You have to have gimp or some other multiformat graphics editor which sucks for limited HDD space as gimp takes up some space but it is fine, I did what I had to do and then I can remove gimp and regain my HDD space. Another thing is that I actually had to resize MY icon theme icon for logout to 32x32 and not 48x48 as that size was correct for the button on the whisker panel BUT I had to leave the 32x32 sized icon IN the 48x48 FOLDER of usr/share/icons/hicolor/48x48/actions. Do what you like to make it look like you want but that is what I just did and got my theme icon back

Since papirus icons were working correctly, I copied the xfsm-logout & xfsm-shutdown icons from there and put them into the icon directory I was using.
on CLI, cd to the icon directory. sudo gtk-update-icon-cache
logout and log back in and now it looks normal. Could change or modify any svg icon and give them those names and they will work.

The icon in the menu for logout is wrong, however when I click it and I can pick between logout, restart, shut down.. that stuff, the icon there is as it should be.

Ah well.. I just sneeze when I open the menu, that way I don't see the wonky. ;)

Here's something interesting: (Though I took these snapshots on Fluxbox session) On App Finder, on the left pane, Settings icon is the original and on the right, the new one, that's from

/usr/share/icons/hicolor/scalable/apps/org.xfce...

And, though system-lock-screen and system-users are still there, it uses different ones.

@Eadwine Rose if you like, you can try to copy the ones (in the picture) that begin with system-xxx from Papirus. In fact, all others (like the xfsm... mentioned above) are links to these files.

Regarding this screenshot from Huck Finn, download/file.php?id=21356&mode=view

These are mainly the official new XFCE icons for 4.16. For instance, I definitely recognise the power manager, session and appearance icons.

I don't think they are papirus reimaginations of the xfce new icons. Did we even push any update of papirus?

So the fact that the new XFCE 4.16 icons found their way into MX19 (xfce 4.14) is likely an oversight in the updates pushed onto MX19?

The only confusing thing is: Some are still used from Papirus (as the original) and some from hicolor.. Say, though there's a Power Manager icon there (hicolor) still the original (Papirus) icon is being used on panel.. (I just wonder according to what.. If they changed all together then I'd say it's very normal.. )

I do not know, but this may be related to the updates? On top of icons changing mysteriously, now my QT5 apps are all white again and my GTK3 theme is not applying to the QT5 apps and additionally, the QT5 settings button in XFCE settings panel is not responding.. So.. just thought I would ask, is THIS happening to anyone else too?

Could be the size availability. If the hicolor icons from xfce only come in medium size and larger icons, and the panel or notification area icon needs to be smaller, then maybe Papirus is used?

I'm guessing also XFCE renamed a lot of their icons with the "org.xfce.[ ]" prefix now, and perhaps the corresponding desktop files (for the relevant xfce app) identify/target the icon by the full name. If Papirus or any other icon set doesn't have an icon/symlink with that complex long name for that icon, then it'll revert to the xfce new icon in hicolor.

That explains it! Cause when I copied MY ICON from the theme I have installed, to /usr/share/icons/hicolor/48x48/actions/ and then renamed the offending icon to something else, and renamed MY ICON to the now new default icon name XFCE whiskermenu is expecting "xfsm-logout.png" , I got an instant change to the log out icon in the whisker menu panel. I did have to resize my icon to 32x32 and NOT 48x48, because the icon is too big in the whisker panel button just like the hicolor default icon. So it took some manual work but I got it back. No gtk-icon-cache update required!. In theory you can compile your own "hicolor" icon pack using your own custom icons as long as ALL icons use the correct names and sizes and locations that correspond to the hicolor theme. For those that do not understand or know, hicolor icon theme is the systemwide DEFAULT fallback icons for MX LINUX. I found this out when slimming down my MX install iso snapshots. Sadly, this is alot of workaround and work and effort to keep what I like and set and use, because of some rogue updates.. What to do what to do..

asqwerth wrote: Sat Feb 27, 2021 11:42 amCould be the size availability. If the hicolor icons from xfce only come in medium size and larger icons, and the panel or notification area icon needs to be smaller, then maybe Papirus is used?
Yes, I considered that, too. But then again: on Actions menu all are Papirus (suspend , logout etc) and only switch user and lock screen changed to hicolor , when they're all present in Papirus directory .. Same menu, same size requirement ...

On top of icons changing mysteriously, now my QT5 apps are all white again and my GTK3 theme is not applying to the QT5 apps and additionally, the QT5 settings button in XFCE settings panel is not responding.. So.. just thought I would ask, is THIS happening to anyone else too?
since we do not have a QT5 settings button in Xfce by default, I have no idea what you've done. let's take that to a different thread. Its not related to the whisker update.

in my case, the settings icon IS the new Xfce icon. so once theme designers catch up to xfce's new icon definitions they should be good.

Nope, you did not.
- MX stable: 20200201 (one year old)
- MX test: 20201001 (4 months old)
- Debian backports: 20210201 (current)

Just to confirm, you're using xfce 4.16, right?

Which means your case wouldn't be the same as the OP and Eadwine, since you would already have all the official xfce 4.16 icons in hicolor by default.

Everyone still on xfce 4.14 would not have the new xfce icons with their new long names in hicolor as a fallback, so if the whisker menu update now points to the new xfce icon names for the logout/exit etc buttons, a user applying an older icon theme without those icon names would now display some other generic non-matching icon for the logout/exit buttons.

On the other hand, I've just updated a MX19.1 VM and I see no changes to the logout/exit button in whisker.

I'm using the Papirus version from Test Repo, but I suspect it was never a problem even for Stable repo's Papirus, since Hick Finn's screenshot shows the Stable Repo version and he didn't have any issues.

Testing on the limited number of other icon sets in my VM, I note that Numix/Numix-Circle, Evolvere2, Faenza, Korla, all have no problems with the new xfce icon names. Only Adwaita/Tango/Gnome, Moka/Faba (used in MXFB) and probably older icon sets have Eadwine's problem with the giant logout icon.

It might not be too much of an issue except for users who prefer older sets that are no longer maintained.

Here's hoping Stevo can push an update to revert the whisker package for those still using xfce 4.14, but for older, no longer maintained icon sets, the problem will surface again in MX21.

Suggested (manual) solutions have already been posted in this thread.

I am not on 16, I am on Xfce 4.14.2 indeed.

here's a rebuild of 2.4.6 that pretends it's an upgrade for 2.5.3, headed for the test repo. Ignore the dbgsym packages, please.

I'd like to try the version in test but all that's offered besides 2.5.3 is 2.3.1-1, no 2.4.6. Is there a different test repo I could try?

xfce4-whiskermenu-plugin 2.3.1-1

it's not in test yet for some reason, but you can download my zip from my link up there, extract it, and manually install the deb file until it gets there.

I don't know how you're seeing 2.3.1 in our test repo, though--look for yourself: http://mxrepo.com/mx/testrepo/pool/test ... nu-plugin/

Thanks, Stevo. When I checked this morning, the package was in the repo. Seems it took a day longer to get there.

As to the versions which appear, this is what shows now in Synaptic:
http://la.mxrepo.com/mx/testrepo/

2.5.3-1really2.4.6~mx19+1 (now)
2.5.3-1~mx19+1 (mx)
2.3.1-1 (stable)

I thought the 2.3.1-1 was odd because that seemed quite old, but that's what shows. If I follow 'my' test repo (la) to the package, 2.3.1 doesn't even show there. Hmm...

http://la.mxrepo.com/mx/testrepo/pool/t ... nu-plugin/

Anyway, your modded version did the trick. No more jumbo logout icon in the Whisker menu. Thanks!

My guess:

Since Debian Stable is still on XFCE 4.12, it's likely whisker 2.3+ could be the Debian Stable Buster repo's gtk2 whisker version for 4.12.

MX19's own default repo currently has the unreverted 2.5.3-1 (which is actually for xfce 4.16)

MX19's Test repo will now have the 2.5.3-1really2.4.6~mx19+1 (which is the proper one that works with xfce 4.14)
