Have to agree with him, that creates a horrendous workflow.

Were those two-month-old previews pre-alpha?

The point-and-click UI is good (Short-&-Simple) for initial learning, shifts+keystroke UI is good for efficiency and sophistication (aka complexity) - perhaps touch UI is better for some purposes/hardware. Best practice is to have all options available.

Kaffeine uses the VLC library and presents a simplified UI for recording or watching broadcast TV (or playing dvd,…).
Perhaps other overlay-apps will provide similar UI services?
(I know, adding layers ramps up complexity, and is not often best-practice.)

VLC can be useful for evaluating tracks on a plastic disc; what other app is good for this with DVDs?

I used to favor VLC, until an errant drag-and-drop instead of mouse-move put something in the filesystem that sends it into segfault (CPU over 60%, then RAM to 98%) - now it won't even work from most live distros.

[update: vlc-3.0.13 didn't break my kaffeine, nor did it fix my segfault.]

fully retired due to old age and sickness but if not broke them don't fix it!

Just a note that we have an updated vlc-3.0.13 in the MX 17-19 test repos that is a bug and security fix, and would appreciate some testing.

I have also used Kaffeine. Not sure it has all the same features, but it may be a decent substitute.
