Wayland isn't entirely bad news. It seems simpler and more secure than X and making it the default will allow more bugs to be ironed out and probably motivate hardware vendors to support it more. However the least they could have done is ensured Synaptic would work on Wayland (or at least, XWayland) before being so eager to switch over.

I would love it if Synaptic (and other applications including XFCE) dropped GTK+ altogether and used Qt instead (a la LXQt). I can't understand why XFCE are wasting so much time and effort porting to GTK3 rather than moving to a proper toolkit like Qt. GTK are famous for breaking compatibility between minor versions (all in the name of "innovation") which is an utterly ridiculous situation.

Packagesearch is still in the repos, and provides a GUI for searching and installing packages, though sunrat reports that it froze on his Sid installation.
