mx-package-manager (new MX app)

Hey all,
I rewrote MX-Package-Installer, MX-Test-Installer, MX-Debian-Backports-Installer into one application. I added the feature to remove packages and to manage all the system apps -- however this package is not meant to replace Synaptic, just to provide an alternative and supplement some features (installing from Debian backports, installing from MX test repo, installing apps not available in Synaptic: e.g., Google Chrome).
I improved some things and fixed bugs so it would be really nice I could use this package once is fully tested and translated to replace the 3 apps instead of having to backport all the improvements into the old packages.
EDIT: The package is now the repos, you can install it with "apt-get install mx-package-manager" or use Synaptic.
The package right now don't conflict with MX-Package-Installer, MX-Test-Installer, MX-Debian-Backports-Installer so you can install alongside, but in the future we'll probably remove those apps and keep only this unified application.
Please test and let me know how it works.
EDIT: after you install it either launch it from menu (you might need to log out and back in to see it there) or from terminal with "sudo -E mx-package-mangager" (the -E option insure you pass the environment to the package, otherwise it might look differently since it would use root settings not your own)

(Installed 64-bit on fresh install.)
Popular Applications worked to install/uninstall something.
Full App Catalog>MX Test Repo worked to install/uninstall something.
Full App Catalog>Debian Backports Repo worked to install/uninstall something.
Trivial:
Would it be possible to change the colour of the text on the Popular Applications tab that is used for the sections from the sickly green to plain black please? It has always grated with me!
Clicking About>License returns to the Package Manager without displaying anything.
This will tidy up the current individual tools very nicely; thanks for all the effort.

That sounds easy, but I don't have a good solution other than changing to regular text color (black) but at the same time I want the name of the category to be different enough than the name of the packages. The problem is that depending on the theme whatever color I pick it might not show up OK on both dark and light themes.
Clicking About>License returns to the Package Manager without displaying anything.
I fixed that, I didn't bump the version since is a trivial issue, if you redownload the .deb you'll see it works now.
EDIT: I changed the text to black too, please reload and let me know if it's better.

Thanks Adrian, IMO opinion the black text looks much better, and fits well with the other MX tools.
License link works as expected now too.

I had previously installed the new papirus-icon-theme (with "gtk" dropped from the name) from Test Repo.
Opened the new MX Package Manager and accessed the Test Repo. Used search term "papirus":- papirus-icon-theme was found but not marked as being already installed. When I ticked the box next to it, the "Install" and not "Uninstall" button was ungreyed.
I wonder if it had anything to do with the fact that in stable repo, a dummy transitional package for the old papirus-gtk-theme [whatever it's called] was still installed/in existence.

I'm not sure, I had the gtk package installed when I switched to MX Test Repo I saw that gtk had an update and the papirus-icon-theme was available to be installed, I installed it and it pull the gtk update with it. From my point it looked as it should, not sure why it didn't show the package as installed for you.

The dummy package can be removed after the upgrade, if that fixes anything.

Nice touch.
A great timesaver --start 1 for 3.
Will look for something to install later.

Yep, apps installed are greyed, upgradeable have a small adjacent icon, and an upgrade worked.

Just a quick update, the package is now the repos, you can install it with "apt-get install mx-package-manager" or use Synaptic.

Hello. Sorry for the bad English. Nice app. I have one question. This package is optional, or it is will be available with standard updates?

I think it will be pushed as a upgrade/replacement for mx-packageinstaller once is declared good-to-go.

solving a mystery, the papirus-gtk-icon-theme dummy package in the test repo doesn't have any dependencies, so while it shows as an upgrade, it doesn't actually install papirus-icon-theme.
here's the result of upgrading via that dummy package. I icon themes are all missing and it defaults back to another theme (tango I believe).

Works for me, cheers.
Well done on this consolidation. Switching repos, uninstalling, nice....
As an aside while browsing this, VLC now includes the teletext plugin as standard (I realised recently), and I noticed an upgradable package in the MX Test Repo (I can activate subs from recorded DTV programs from my box thing now without pinning).

Thanks, D_O for solving the issue.
I was puzzled but it only happened on one of my MX16 VMs. I couldn't reproduce it on my original real metal MX15 installation, possibly because papirus was manually installed on it subsequently.
The new MX Package Manager works fine on my MX15 installation, BTW.

I do like the ability to upgrade individual packages easily. I wanted to do this in Synaptic the other day, skipping the VB packages to save on ISP data. I didn't see an obvious way to do that with Synaptic in the end.
I can also see all my installed applications, which is handy. I should learn how to manually export such a list for reference and re-installation in the future.

individual packages easily [..] I didn't see an obvious way to do that with Synaptic
bottom-left, click to filter based on package status and select "upgradable" as the filter.
In the list displayed, you can right-click any line and toggle "mark for upgrade" for that line item.
From there, you can immediately click "Apply" button, or mark additional lines.
Shift-click selects a range of lines, in case you want to mark several selected in one operation.
ps:
if you visit synaptic preferences and set a color for various status(es), it will be immediately obvious which packages are upgradable, without the need to use the filter-by status buttons.

@ skidoo. Thank you. Had not thought of setting colors, a good scheme. Also, statuses is correct according to Webster, although as status originates from the Latin, statii could be accepted in some places. Then again, some experts say that status does not need a plural.

Whenever I try to install the package I can't find it (regardless of the mirror) and Gdebi is broken
I need to find a solution before I can try package-manager...
Edit : when I launched Gdebi through CLI it worked and then I could manually install mx-package-manager
Edit2 : I don't know if it is worth to mention it but I had mx15 main non-free source disabled. Everything has return to normal now

Pardon my ignorance if I post in the wrong thread. However, I could not find any dedicated section for MX tools only (maybe an idea :lipsrsealed: ). I am very new to linux but I think I get the concept of packages and repositories very well. I've been just playing with the
MX Test Repo when
upgrading xfce4 packages. I did not like it and started downgrading relevant packages back to the stable version using synaptics. I started with the least significant one.
The issue:
- MX Package Installer now shows that there is a newer version in the Stable Repo even though there is not. See the example below. The last version of xfce4-pulseaudio-plugin in the stable repo is 0.2.4-1. Could someone please confirm that this is a glitch in the GUI?

PS: Refreshing the list does not help. Maybe purging apt will help?

You repo seem to be ok, no test-repo enabled.
Not sure what you have done with "started downgrading relevant packages back to the stable version using synaptics"
To go back from a test-repo installed version, just install the version from stable using MXPI,
and make sure you have not manually enabled the test-repo.

If I remember correctly, I went to synaptic and used the
Force version option. This did not work for non-obvious reasons (message: operation failed). I uninstalled the complete package an reinstalled the version I wanted manually. This is still only about the xfce4-pulseaudio-plugin. I went this path because I was not able to downgrade my xfce4 packages through MXPI and I don't know better.
Let's have another example - xfce4-settings. MXPI claims that the latest version has been already installed:

If I proceed further, I'll get this:

Same story with xfce4-power-manager

but the latest official version in Stable Repo is 1.4.4-4. If i try to download it, I'll get:

Conclusions:
- It is not possible to downgrade packages from the Test Repo to Stable Repo using the MXPI (at least in my case)
Edit: After manually removing old packages (apt-get autoremove) and rebooting the system, MXPI does not show xfce4-pulseaudio-plugin update anymore.

Well, your pictures do indicate, the MXPI shows the content of the local package list including the packages from the test-repo.
You would need the refresh the package list first, after having disabled the test-repo, which
you seem have enabled manually. Trying to install from an non-valid package list will not succeed.
If you install a package with MXPI from the test-repo, the test-repo will automatically and temporally first enabled and after installation disabled and the stable-repo list refreshed after installation.
You have done it somehow manually, keeping the old package list, and confusing MXPI and yourself
It's not recommended to enable the test-repo and keep it enabled.
You can always check with MX Repo Manager just in case.

Thank you Fehlix for your swift replies. I admit that I fiddled with packages manually and I am probably the first reason of the previously described behavior.
Because I am a curious little penguin, I took my second machine (Thinkpad x61) which has never had anything from the test repo. I installed xfce4-pulseudio-plugin from the test repo, rebooted the laptop (heh, windows guy here) and tried to go back to the stable version using the MXPI. However, it seems that MXPI is not able to switch back to the stable version once the packge from the test repo was installed.

Could you please test this behavior? What would be the recommended way how to "downgrade" a package from the test repo back to the version from the stable repo?
Thanks!

MXPI cannot downgrade.
When I downgrade, I remove the package then reinstall from the repo I want. You can sometimes also force a downgrade with synaptic.

Yes, D_O's answer is the correct procedure, short and precise - as always
To reinstall the version from stable: remove existing installed from test-repo, and reinstall again from stable (with disabled testrepo).

Guys, there is still something fishy about the MXPI. Today, I wanted to update my kicad package since the new release fixes issues which are important to me. It was a transition from the version 5.0.0 to 5.0.2.
I checked my notes and found out that I installed the version 5.0.0 from the test repo using the MXPI. All right, I opened the MXPI and went to check if there is a new version (5.0.2) available. I went to the test repo and to my surprise, the kicad package wasn't there anymore. I tried other sources and I found it only in the Debian Backports section. I wanted to do an upgrade but this did not work. Okay, I removed the old 5.0.0 package completely and wanted to do a "clean" installation of the 5.0.2 version. However, for whatever reason my MXPI started showing the 5.0.2 version of the kicad also in the Stable Repo. I assume this is a bug in the GUI because 5.0.2 installation from the stable repo installs actually the ancient version 4.0.5. Only the installation from the Debian Backports works.
Summary:
- MXPI GUI can go sometimes crazy and shows an incorrect version of packages.
- The GUI gets stuck and now permanently shows incorrect version of kicad in the stable repo no matter what I try (apt clean, reboot).
- why kicad 5.0.0 disappeared from the test repo?
PS: I have two laptops running MX18 so I can compare. Both laptops show different results when I search "kicad" using the MXPI.
Below is an image of the "broken" MXPI. I believe, each of you can confirm that the 5.0.2 in the stable repo does not exist.

those ~bp* in the version numbers are give aways that the debian backports repo is enabled on that machine. Or at least the apt-cache still has debian-backports information in it. refreshing the sources will probably clear that up, as long as the backports repo isn't in active sources.
