trying to install w64codecs from MXPI

I'm having the exact same problem and saw this thread.
I get the exact same terminal output when trying to install w64codecs from MXPI.

My goal is to get the old codecs for being able to play *.flv *.mov files.
Also I'm trying to get *.webm video files working.
In my earlier debian system I remember that I played little *.webm clips right within gThumb, without any problems. In this installation, neither vlc, nor mpv, nor gThumb nor Gwenview are able to play any of this stuff.
Sadly I dont remember which packages I had installed back then that made me able to play that stuff.

It's not that my hard disk is full of this old stuff, but if something like this comes up again, I want to be prepared. Otherwise, a good video converter might be an option, although that would also need the codecs as a basis, wouldn't it?

Any information on this is welcome.

I believe deb multimedia has quit offering the w64codecs package. will remove from mxpi. there is no real loss I think, unless you have a library of realaudio files or ancient (not modern) wma files laying around.

Alright thank you! Do u see a chance to get the .webm stuff working though, as this seems to be a pretty popular format nowadays?

its preinstalled. all players should be able to handle webm.

it wasn't included in those codecs anyway.

**note : I just checked and my webm format vids are playing fine in vlc.

@debianix Next time, even though your issues are similar, please start your own thread, as to not steal it, thanks. I am splitting this one off.

Thank you! I just checked again and suddenly, .webm files are played flawlessly with VLC, gThumb, Gwenview and mpv.... Before, when I posted, one webm file opened with any of those players led to a crash of any of those programs....
In retrospect, I can no longer explain this, but I don't feel the need to investigate the reasons any further. It works now and that makes me very happy :-)
Thank you very much for your support!
And I cant say it often enough - thank u so much for that MX Linux project in general. :number1: The more I use it, the more of a fanboy I become.

While I can't guarantee every permutation of them will work, I have some old .flv and .mov videos and they play for me in mplayer, ffplay, or vlc. Make sure you have all four of the gstreamer1.0-plugins-(base/good/bad/ugly) installed.

Okay, which of them do u mean? There is a whole bunch of packages available, including varieties of "bad" etc... makes it not easy do decide, what to actually install:

W64codecs date back to the 2000s, and provided exactly one ye olde RealPlayer proprietary and obsolete codec. There were hardly any 64-bit machines so long ago!

gstreamer1.0-plugins-base
gstreamer1.0-plugins-good
gstreamer1.0-plugins-bad
gstreamer1.0-plugins-ugly

You'll notice that most of the others in your list have no installation candidate, meaning they don't exist in the repositories.

Those gstreamer plugins aren't used by most of our media players anyway...mpv, ffplay, vlc, etc. use ffmpeg libraries instead. You can do a reverse-depends for the -base plugins package to see which will need them in Synaptic or on the command line.

Code: Select all

apt rdepends gstreamer1.0-plugins-base

I also run very old FLV videos. And with the exception of Thunderbird and Firefox, I don't like using new software that has been improved for the worse.
