The vast majority of codecs are already included in MX. w64codecs (which originated with mplayer but is no longer used by it) was last available in debian stretch/MX-17.
If there's a particular file type giving you problems let us know.

I'm just trying to fix the problem of videos freezing but the sound continues; it all started when I switch sound cables from the monitor to the speaker , but I there is no problem in the other OS install in the same hard drive MX is ; for the past month or so the updates have not been able to update the nvidia driver, but I did not have any problem until a couple of days when I switch cables; thank you responding to my problem.

Not a codecs issue at all then, but a hardware one.

There have been no Nvidia driver updates recently for Debian or MX; this is not a rolling distro.

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"

Deb-Multimedia-Keyring is installed?

Code: Select all

wget https://www.deb-multimedia.org/pool/main/d/deb-multimedia-keyring/deb-multimedia-keyring_2016.8.1_all.deb
You have the right deb-multimedia-ppa version?
For MX23 bookworm use in your sources list:

Code: Select all

deb https://www.deb-multimedia.org bookworm main non-free
or

Code: Select all

deb ftp://ftp.deb-multimedia.org bookworm main non-free

But you can w64codecs download from server deb-multimedia => https://www.deb-multimedia.org/pool/non ... _amd64.deb
New mplayer-1.5 avaible here => http://mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/deb/pool/main/mplayer/

Just be aware before enabling the deb-multimedia repo that @Stevo has warned many times that it doesn't use standard Debian package number versioning.

So there may be confusion during updates as to which version of certain packages are newer - those MX has already backported, or a deb-multimedia one.

Not a codecs issue at all then, but a hardware one

so why is it not affecting Mint that is install in the same M.2 drive.

and no I don't have any of the multimedia repos install; MX has been flawless up to now so I use as it is given; but it is no use if I can't watch videos ; I did try switching drivers but xorg drivers have the same problem ; so is it time to reinstall MX ???

What is the kernel version of your mint install ? (And is it a liquorix version? )

There have been a few reports of some issues with 6.9.x liquorix kernels and one of the major work with them is in sound drivers. You *might* just try loading a 6.6.x liquorix kernel and see if it makes any difference.

Mint uses 5.15 generic
I try all the kernel available and the problem did not go away so I left it on the 6.9

Test the problem media files with a live MX session to see if the problem persists there.

The problem with blaming it on codecs is that the live session playback works for 99.9+% of everyone else.
I'm just trying to fix the problem of videos freezing
Part of asking for help would to provide more detail about the problem videos or what player you're using. Is it streaming video in a brower? Many free browsers can't pay the fee for h.264/h.265 videos codecs, so the user must manually install them. But we know hardly anything about your issues.

This is probably a coincidence because at the same time there was somehow a change in the MX system, for example due to an update or accidentally changed player settings. Something similar happened to me a few days ago when new video downloads were only displayed with the MPV player and were jerky. The cause was a new, unusual codec in these videos. After I installed additional packages for this AV1 codec and adjusted the VLC settings, these videos now run smoothly in the VLC player.

the problem is in all videos, YouTube ,Disney, amazon, ....; the live session I have try to update but it could not showing that it had many deprecated files so I could not get any sound at all . and now trying to fix it I think I just made to many changes to the system so ( for right now ) I think is best to reinstall and for long term I am going to switch to an AMD card for what I'm seeing it looks like the MSI RX 6600 is a good match for my system . I'll come back after a reinstall; but for right now thanks for your help .

That seems to be a coincidence, since VLC doesn't use those in the way you seem to think. VLC/ffmpeg is already built against lidav1d-dev, for example. It was probably some change in the settings for VLC.

Except those are all streaming services, which are only a subset of videos, and you still haven't said which browser you're using to watch those. Or which Nvidia driver you have.

I think mplayer is being obsoleted by mpv...how does that work? You can use SMPlayer as a front end for it; several others, too--I think Celluloid.

I use SMPlayer as a frontend for MPlayer because it works best with my internal old Intel graphics. MPV consumes too many resources and stutters on AV1-Codec.
