MX 23.2 - Unrecognized USB Ports On Old System

Posted: Thu Feb 01, 2024 9:53 am
by JacBKwik
Have been a fan of MX for quite a while now. Started with MX-19...then on to 21 and eventually to the current 23.2
Have always found them to be outstanding distros as well as being easy to install and use. Perfect! Great work!

Yesterday, I installed the latest version (23.2) to see if it would install and run on an old (2006) machine that had
been running the latest version of Linux Peppermint. MX 23 does install successfully and with no issues, other than one.
I will note my installation time (from DVD) seemed to take forever. I was expecting maybe 30+ minutes. It turned out to be 2 hours +.

The major issue for me is the USB Ports are now unrecognized under MX-23. When a flashdrive is plugged in, I've found MX,
in the past (on other computers), would recognize this in seconds. With 23.2, those ports, on this computer,
no longer are discovered or display after a plug-in.

I know the port is not the issue as it had worked yesterday under Peppermint just ahead of installing MX-23.
Without my USB ports being recognized, I can no longer use thumbdrives to backup files. This is a major problem for me.
I really don't want to go back to Peppermint when MX-23 otherwise seems to work flawlessly...even on an ancient machine.
Oh what to do???

With nothing plugged in the port, in a terminal do:

Code: Select all

lsusb
Now plug something in, wait a moment, and repeat the command. Can you see the thing you have plugged in added to the list?

I think that he could speed up the process with the "from usb" boot code but I can't find the exact syntax required in my notes. Can anybody help?

does that mean you can see it in a terminal, but not the file manager? where are you expecting to see it or use it that is not working if that is still an issue?

The Drive shows under the terminal after "lsusb" command, ...but the Thunar file manager is not showing the USB port or flashdrive.

can you check in Thunar's Edit menu -> Preferences -> Advanced tab to see if there is a check in the box to the left of "Enable Volume Management"?

There is a check mark next to "Enable Volume Management.

Just an equals sign:

Code: Select all

from=usb
:)

From your user's manual, page 130, found here:
https://dl.dell.com/manuals/all-product ... _en-us.pdf

You may have to enable the USB ports in the bios. Often times in early computers, devices that were 'on' by default in Windows were 'off' by default in Linux.

just below that there is a Configure option. if you click on that it opens a Removable Drives and Media window. the first tab has some options for Removable Storage. you can change this later, but if you put a check in one of those first two boxes then replug the drive does anything change?

In the meantime, was/is it the same when on live session? (When booted with the one you installed).

Also, is it the same if you try any other flash drive or just "that" one ?

I guess my question then would be, if I've been running Linux systems (Peppermint most recently and ahead of the MX install) and without any USB port issue... and without having to change anything in BIOS, wouldn't it seem this is likely not the issue?.

In answer to some other questions posed - not sure if USB ports displayed under "live" session or not. Didn't look
Also, different flashdrives have been inserted in USB port...all without success.

And.... "just below that there is a Configure option. if you click on that it opens a Removable Drives and Media window. ? etc, etc"
I'll try this momentarily

Those auto-mount options are already enabled in Thunar preferences ootb, so, there's something else, that's why I asked how it was on live session.

In case you have Windows, too, disable "Fast Startup" there.

Top "3" boxes are all checked. I presume as default when the system was installed, as noted

When the USB Port shows under terminal, I notice the port displays here as "Device 4" ....whereas everything else is displaying as "Device 1 or 2" - Is this suspect?
I'm in wayy over my head once we get to this point. ;-) Just seems to be out of range when compared to the others that are functioning

MD5 checksum was not made. ISO downloaded and burned to DVD install disk. I will note... This same install DVD was used
earlier in the week, albeit on a somewhat newer notebook. There were no issues with the USB port being seen after that install.

Put the DVD in again and see if the USB ports work.

Assuming they do not, try to put MX on a USB stick and boot from it (Do Alt+F1 to see the boot log). It'll probably fail, but note down the error message and post it here.

Sorry for the delayed response. I'm only at this computer once a week and today's the day.

This issue has now been [Solved] and here's what I discovered overcame the issue.

At the "Welcome to MX screen" on boot up, I was presented with 4 choices. Normally I would select the top choice and the OS would boot but this did not work for me. I ended up with a flashing cursor on a black screen.

Here are my 4 selection choices:

(1) MX 23.2 Libretto - On selection, stalled with flashing cursor on black screen

(2) Advanced Options for MX-23.2 Libretto (didn't try)

(3) MX 23 Libretto (23) (on /dev/sda1) (didn't try)

(4) Advanced options for MX 23 Libretto (23) (on/dev/sda1) - On choosing this option, the previously "Unrecognized USB Ports" now display in the Thunar file manager, are accessible and function properly.

As choice (2) is nearly identical to (4), I'm thinking it too may work. Will try it sometime when I feel reckless. ;-)

Even on an old system this latest version of MX dazzles. Great work MX Team!

And btw... because my system is old I did not have the option of booting from a flashdrive...only a DVD or HD

Those other Distros you mentioned have 5.x kernels vs MX having 6.x kernels. When it comes down to it those are vastly different kernels and kernel modules.

This could be what has affected the installation on your ~17-year-old PC. antiX has an appeal for older PCs because it offers an older (4.9.x & 5.x) LTS kernel (older than the distros you mentioned).
