My desk is missing things

Good morning everybody.

Since a few days ago my desktop appears incomplete: yes, Conky and Cairo-dock are there, but now I always see the original Wildflower wallpaper as background; moreover, there is no trace of the work files and folders I have there (and which I can access without problems with Thunar).

Could it be that I'm not exactly where I think I am, maybe in another "workspace" or something...?

Thanks in advance.
(Here below I copy my Quick Report.)

Sounds like the desktop isn’t starting.

Code: Select all

xfdesktop4 &

I think will restart it.

Well sometimes the desktop messes up. and during an update that occurred the other day I Had the same issue.
hover on a empty space on the desktop
right click->Desktop Settings**
A Desktop Application will open
Click the tab->Icons
Click the check box *Show icons on primary display

If the button is already clicked uncheck the box and check it again.
You should do this with all issues, your setting in this Desktop Application including your background pictures, etc etc.

** the true name of Desktop Settings is: xfdesktop-settings

Please let this feed know it this helped. Thanks!

Suggestion #2:
PS If you get; what I will call "The White Screen of Death" where nothing is showing up on your desktop including right click. This can be solved by opening the program, Display (xfce4-display-settings).
Then change your Resolution to something different. Click->Apply
screen will refresh -> Click-> Keep this Configuration.
Then again change your Resolution to your desired Monitor Size again. Click->Apply
screen will refresh -> Click-> Keep this Configuration.

And now your desktop will have right click and desktop functions will work again. You got back control after the first screen resolution but I wanted to get you back to where you where before.
Please let this feed know it this helped. Thanks!

maybe xfce4-session. looks like all that is running is the window manager. do you have a panel?

OK this may seem extreme RESET XFCE Desktop Configuration files.

# Step 1
Open a Terminal
# Step 2 Backup your old Copy of your XFCE's config file
mv ~/.config/xfce4 ~/.config/xfce4.bak

# Step 3*** This will copy the Configuration files to your home directory.
cp -r /etc/skel/.config/xfce4 ~/.config/
# Step 4
log out and in again.

*** Step 3 is NOT required but XFCE will be in it's RAWEST form, with NO customization from the team of MX Linux. I would in my option highly suggest that you follow Step 3.

IF you are happy and want to delete the old backup configuration files. open a terminal and type

rm -fdr ~/.config/xfce4.bak

I have followed your recommended steps, and the only change I see is that my side panel customisation has been lost.
I summarise the problem with my desktop: it does not show the background I specify (invariably it shows the default Wildflower wallpaper); the icons of files and folders stored in the Thunar "Desktop" do not appear; the right mouse button does not respond. On the other hand, Conky and Cairo-dock do work.

(Sorry for any inconvenience...).

By the way: could you help me to restore my customized panel?

(Thank you for your attention.)

MX Tweak>Panel - - Affects all panels - - Restore backup panel configuration.

OK restore panel Open a terminal and type:
mv ~/.config/xfce4.bak ~/.config/xfce4

OK restore panel Open a terminal and type:
mv ~/.config/xfce4.bak ~/.config/xfce4

yes OK I am ready to let you know that I have searched the xfce forums and they know about the issue. And this has and is happening to some XFCE users. I have done everything that I can think of too. On how to restore your desktop to original condition. And at this time I am hoping that you made a back up before the crash and I would use that.

However if you do not have a backup well,

OK steps that may help you:
Step 1:
There's a temporary solution. Change wallpaper from solid colors to any image.

All other options are not suggested but left here for the MX Team to go over:
Step 1: did not reset Desktop
MX-tweak
Step 2: did not reset Desktop
CTRL+ALT+F2 logged in. Was Logged out as user in Desktop.
killall xfce4-panel
xfwm4 --replace
restart
Step 3: did not reset Desktop
CTRL+ALT+F2 logged in. Was Logged out as user in Desktop.
rm -fdr ~/.cache/sessions/*
rm -fdr ~/.config/
cp -r /etc/skel/.config/ ~/.config/
Step 4: create a new user (MX way)
When open up XFCE corners still did not work.
Step 5: VM MX Linux (sftp, ssh)
copied configuration file ~/.config/ to current
Step 6: Created new user
The new user is experiencing the same problems with XFCE.

Found this suggestion on the internet, did not do this but here it is. There was one more suggestion: In my case I somehow fixed it by reinstalling LightDM
But I am not sure of that one.

And the only other suggestion that I have is to install KDE or purge XFCE and reinstall and I definitely don't want to tell a new user to do that and it might not even work since I have not tried it. I did install KDE and it did NOT help XFCE.

i've tried these tips, but without success. More about weird behaviour in my desktop: during the boot, a window terminal appears just before Conky and remain in the background! 🤔

OK I just had the white screen of death just now. the background was all white and the icons where all gone.

Solution:
Open up MX Tweaks
Click the tab->Display
Change your Resolution to something different click apply. my background screen came back. But Icons still missing
Changed by to original resolution.

then changed xrandr from 1.00 to 1.05 clicked apply and my icons came back.
changed xrandr back to 1.00

These tips don't work in my system.

Anyway, why does appear a terminal window over the wallpaper during the boot process? It occurs after Conky and before Panel... Where can I configure wich applications run at start-up?

From the MX menu, Session and Startup. Application Autostart tab.

Bingo!

MX menu > Session and Startup > Sessions saved
... and delete the session that I apparently must have saved a few days ago without realising it.

Thank you everyone around here for putting me on the track!
