Try connecting your USB Floppy drive to different USB ports on your computer and see if any will allow it to operate correctly.

That solved the problem in one 2018 thread I was looking at.

May just need more power. If it doesn't accept external power, try it on a powered USB hub.

Fully aqgree with figueroa. Am running an ASUS external floppy from a powered USB hub. The floppy has the advantage of an extra USB connector
wired to parallel the power feed. No problems at all.

I have two of these floppy drives, both bought recently, and both of them work on W7 but not on MX.
Some people find their ostensibly similar drives do work on MX, so the manufacturers must have done something to stop Linux from using them.

How can I get an external floppy drive that works on MX?

If you are connecting your USB FDD to your computer without a floppy disk inside, then try connecting it with a floppy disk already inside the FDD.

I have heard that "solution" work on a Linux system (Mint) but that was years ago. And removing and inserting other floppy disks while the FDD is still connected/mounted would work fine thereafter. The problem was just at the mounting phase.

I found this one on Amazon:

SYBA USB Portable 3.5" Floppy Disk Drive, Plug and Play No Drivers Needed, Windows 2000/XP/Vista/7/8/10 Mac OSX Linux (External) NEC Chipset SY-USB-FDD

It says it's Linux compatible. I've also seen other brands that do not have Linux support, but the Syba one does.

Just throwing that out there.
