Slow Boot  [Solved]

I am still trying to learn this system. My boot time is very slow, around 5 minutes. I checked my boot log (I think this is it) and it seems to be doing the same thing over and over. I have MX 19.3 installed
This is the log from MX Boot Options:
rootMX19: clean, 305349/30392320 files, 3913489/121564160 blocks
INIT: version 2.93 booting
[info] Using makefile-style concurrent boot in runlevel S.
[ ok ] Starting hotplug events dispatcher: systemd-udevd.
[ ok ] Synthesizing the initial hotplug events (subsystems)...done.
[ ok ] Synthesizing the initial hotplug events (devices)...done.
[ ok ] Waiting for /dev to be fully populated...done.
[ ok ] Setting up keyboard layout...done.

This is repeated many times( about 12 or so) system wouldn't let me post the whole log. Said it was forbidden

There is about a 15 second pause between each.

Please post the output of the command

Code: Select all

cat /etc/fstab
and also your Quick System Info.

EDIT: Sorry, the problem isn't in /etc/fstab

Open the log file as root should allow you to see everything without getting the " forbidden" message.

I can see the whole log. I get the "forbidden" when I try to post it here.

Of course it let me post it this time.
The error read: Forbidden Contains contacts

Try an fsck OR reboot into a live medium -> GNOME disks -> Check for errors and fix it in your / partition (labelled "rooMX19").

Do these errors come up even after the fsck ? Is the boot time faster now ?

I no longer get the errors and boot time went from 5:33 minutes down to 2:52 minutes

Is that a reasonable boot time or is it still slow?

I have an SSD on its way and I hope that speeds up things even more

2 minutes is about what it takes my rusty drive .... MX on my my SSD drives boots in closer to 20 seconds

What's the startup time for a live USB ?
(This is just a VERY ROUGH estimate)

You may consider disabling swap by commenting out (adding a # in the beginning of) the swap line in /etc/fstab
Note: Disabling swap is very good, especially for SSDs, but it should not be done if you plan to use more volatile memory than the RAM capacity.

Another speedup is /tmp on tmpfs:

Code: Select all

# Run this script only ONCE on any system (or remove the old entries before running again).
echo "tmpfs /tmp tmpfs defaults,rw,nosuid,nodev 0 0" | sudo tee -a /etc/fstab
sudo reboot # Reboot the system

From GRUB prompt to login prompt is 55 seconds:
AMD Athlon(tm) 7850 Dual-Core Processor; 4 GB RAM;
Spinning rust; IDE interfaces; ATA-7: Maxtor 6L200P0, BAJ41G20, max UDMA/133
MX-19.4_x64 XFCE4; Linux mx 4.19.0-17-amd64
PCCHIPS A15G/A15G, BIOS 080015 08/13/2009
Added: Have a 2 GB swap partition on second drive.
Edited: Also reorganized specs for logical flow.

Just a little update. Improved my boot time even more. For some reason it was trying to read my raid system( don’t have one) deleted the adadm file. Also it was hanging up on trying to reach the host server for Google Remote Desktop. Once I removed GRD. Boot time is around 20 seconds.
