I find SMPlayer the best alternative.
In fact I've used nothing else for the last 8 years or so.

Yet another excellent tool that heading the way of the dodo if they fail to provide for the masses, however, I am very certain we will quickly see a fork that brings back the best interface ever to have been employed by a Media player. The new UI for 4.0 makes me think of the words of Gollum from LOTR, "We likes it raw, Stupid fat Hobbitses, He's ruining it, Gives it to us RAW!"
I ditched VLC for MPV years ago. It has the best interface ie. none unless you count the controls that pop up when you mouse over. Learn a few keyboard controls and Bob's yer uncle. I recently learned how to loop sections (press "L" for start, "L" for end, and "L" for clear), much easier. Combined with speed control ( [ and ]) it's great for practicing those trickier tai chi moves.thinkpadx wrote: Fri Feb 19, 2021 1:55 pm just for the heck of it - what would be the best alternative? seriously? thanks.
Code: Select all

Maybe OT but my favorite player is also MPV. Have a little problem with slower PCs.. Some videos use near 90 % CPU, but after Ctrl - H = Hardware decoding = vaapi, CPU goes down, also on weak CPU to unter 10 %. With HW on in MVP CPU usage is on same level like VLC.sunrat wrote: Fri Feb 19, 2021 9:09 pmI ditched VLC for MPV years ago. It can be done but is not recommended -Sigi wrote: Tue May 04, 2021 12:51 pmDo you know, how to set MPV per default always using vaapi for HW decoding?
