I find SMPlayer the best alternative.
In fact I've used nothing else for the last 8 years or so.

As soon as I saw the title on this thread, I thought Oh crap, there goes worlds best media player! Then I read Dedoimedo's review, and it's one of the very rare times I nearly totally agree with him.

Yet another excellent tool that heading the way of the dodo if they fail to provide for the masses, however, I am very certain we will quickly see a fork that brings back the best interface ever to have been employed by a Media player. The new UI for 4.0 makes me think of the words of Gollum from LOTR, "We likes it raw, Stupid fat Hobbitses, He's ruining it, Gives it to us RAW!"

Guess I won't be using VLC anymore. I remember switching to it from Winamp and I liked its simple, clean design and performance.
Unfortunately this sort of plague affected the Windows world long before the advent of the iPhone. Remember the infamous "ribbon" interface of Microsoft Office 2007, which soon infected Windows utilities such as Paint and WordPad? In fact I could make a whole new topic on this. Even before that, the term angry fruit salad became relevant. Perhaps this should be called "alcoholic fruit salad"?
Also I wonder if the volume control can still go up to 200%...

Since it's still in an early stage, maybe some of these things will be tweaked.
What's that saying? - hope springs eternal!

I ditched VLC for MPV years ago. It has the best interface ie. none unless you count the controls that pop up when you mouse over. Learn a few keyboard controls and Bob's yer uncle. I recently learned how to loop sections (press "L" for start, "L" for end, and "L" for clear), much easier. Combined with speed control ( [ and ]) it's great for practicing those trickier tai chi moves.
We don't need no steenkin' GUI. :p
Plays pretty much every file of every format I've ever thrown at it too. Drag and drop media into window to play including URLs such as Youtube from your browser.

Also nice from a console. Speaking of Gollum, try this:-

Code: Select all

Maybe OT but my favorite player is also MPV. Have a little problem with slower PCs.. Some videos use near 90 % CPU, but after Ctrl - H = Hardware decoding = vaapi, CPU goes down, also on weak CPU to unter 10 %. With HW on in MVP CPU usage is on same level like VLC.

Do you know, how to set MPV per default always using vaapi for HW decoding? The founded hints does not work for me. --hwdec=auto-copy --hwdec-codecs=all
https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Mpv

Found also an old blog about this, but there should be an easier solution I think..
https://blog.breunig.xyz/2013/09/18/mpv-and-vaapi.html

Could you or anyone else help?

It can be done but is not recommended -
