Tip: Use tint2 panel as a "dock" instead of the default MXFB dock, to save RAM

Hi, inspired by wdscharff great blog about MXFB, I realized that tint2 is so feature rich that it can be used as dock (and at the same time, running another instance as a toolbar!)
1- Create a new document on your home folder, called, for example
tint2.dock
2- Open it using featherpad (or another text editor that you like)
3- Paste this text into it and save the file:
Code: Select all

This will create a dock on the middle left side of the window, that auto hides.
To start that dock simply run this command;
If you want it to auto start, simply add that command to your start up file (Menu > Settings > Configure > start up ; making sure that the last command is always "exec fluxbox"
By default this example dock has only 3 icons, the config and Firefox and Chrome (that only appears if installed)
click the first icon
Pros: Tint2 has very low memory usage; it's easy to add, remove, and move icons, toggle auto-hide
Cons: it's icons are not as easily customizable as the default dock... It's a generic app, not specially made for MXFB

I have not yet gone through "all" configuration options, there are a lot of them, but the configuration of the icons is possible.
First in the menu item Panel>Panel Size and then in
Launcher> Icon Size and >Icon Theme.
For the buttons you have to specify an icon anyway and at the bottom of the Button menu the maximum icon size
Okay, are different menu items, a bit confusing but not totally illogical :-)

@wdscharff - thanks to you I realized how easy it is to configure tint2 to use the Moka icon set, making it even more perfect for using in MXFB (it was getting on my nerves to have firefox quick launch icon that looked different from the icon that came up on the taskbar) - it has so many settings available...

I took the time to make a pretty good aproximation to the default MXFB toolbar in tint2 - basicly I just didn't put it the work to make xfce4-applauncher's icon use the MX logo, and the Leave icon looks a bit wierd (it's a button not an icon, like the rest of the launchers)
Here's Tint2's config file:

The EXIT button fits perfectly if you enter size 32 as icon in the button configuration and click on Center.
If you have to scroll down, the 2 fields below are
just tried out :)

Nice! Great tip.
I could shave off about 15MB from my idle-at-boot memory usage (now down to ~240MB...)

Transparency! I like that, that's why I also have compton active, in the past only because of conky.
Unfortunately not everything can be solved by the nice configuration program of Tint2, or I just don't find it.
Tint2 can do transparency, it is the second value at background_color = #000000 100
I have not found any menu item that is related to it. I have changed the value with geany directly in the configuration file and then checked if there is any entry in the administration program changing , nothing, no corresponding entry.
Is there really no entry or am I too blind to see it today?

@wdscharff: I guess that compton is starting up as daemon only (to allow real transparency for conky's argb transparency requirements). But even if you do have a fully configured 'compton.conf' file in the ~/.config folder, it would probably not touch tint2.
I presently started configuring compton to provide windows shading and -fading, without throwing unwanted shadows/shades on my transparent conkys - but it's a real beast to tame for windowmanagers like fluxbox. (see a small screenshot of present status
https://i.imgur.com/KRF3yur.png
Tint2 reads its transparency settings in the tint2rc file.
Now I don't know how to achieve this in the 'Tint2 Settings' application (the tint2-config app that comes with tint2 install) - I simply find it too confusing to keep an overall view over its configuration. So I do all configurations manually in the tint2rc file.
You are right that transparency is set at "background_color = #000000 100" (1st value is the base color and 2nd value is opacity). But for full bar transparency, you had best amend transparency values of all Backgrounds in tint2rc.
If you are interested, below is the tint2rc of the toolbar shown in my 'Linus giving nvidia the finger' screenshot:

Please do note that the paths in launchers and buttons are NOT the default ones. You should replace these with your own. And probably also set things like 'launcher_icon_theme' and the likes.

DeepL Problem maybe? I have found transparency, it works for me too, I was just surprised that I couldn't find a suitable entry in the GUI and had to do this directly with the editor.
If I put tips for other beginners in my blog and recommend to do everything with the GUI, it is unfavourable if I don't find anything in the GUI for certain points.
I then have to mention this extra and I was simply unsure if I just overlooked it.
Ok, there is just no entry in the GUI :-/
Your desktop looks interesting, I often like it more colourful :-)

This is really nice.
But I have some icons only on first panel when I select to display the panel on all monitors. These are : network connections, sound, notes, unmount. I know these are some special icons (applets ?) that cant be integrated on docks like cairo.
How can I display that on all panels or select one other panel than #1 ?
Panel 1 :

Panel 2 :

Edit : well I added the network manager configuration launcher in the panel but that still dont allow me to select wifi, wired or vpn connections. Only access network manager configuration.

Applications like network-manager, volume-icon are systemtray applets - and systemtray can only be included in one toolbar.
Likewise you can only select network connections (wifi/wired/vpn) from that systemtray applet.
