Also you could just try installing KDE using popular apps tab in mxpi and see how it goes.
Desktop: Intel i5-4460, 16GB RAM, Intel integrated graphics

It might be easier to delete the dot-files and dot-directories (or move them to a new directory as backup) and then you should be able to preserve the home without worrying about conflicts with MX.
