[SOLVED] Unable to put MP3 files onto SD card-- was able before latest MX

[My QSI is down below. My sole OS is MX19.2 with various KDE software.]

I figure some system change occurred in late 2019 when I installed the latest version of MX, which is now MX-19.2_x64 for me. Before that change late last year, I never had any trouble copying MP3 files from Dolphin and pasting them onto an SD card in a card reader. But once I installed the latest version of MX, I find I can't do this any longer. KDE Partition Manager and Gparted state my SD card is formatted in FAT32. kdf says the card's in vfat format. As general user, I have ownership and permission to view and modify the files on that card.

When I'm using Dolphin to try to paste a new MP3 file onto the SD card (which has ample room for a number of MP3 files), I see that the "paste one file" in Dolphin isn't enabled: it's dimmed out.

Why can't I paste more files onto that card? Maybe this is something simple that I'm not recognizing-- I don't know.

[My sole OS is MX-19.2_x64 with various KDE software.]

is the same true of thunar?

is the read-only switch on your card enabled? full size sd cards have a slider that locks the card. even microsd card readers have them sometimes.

I couldn't paste the MP3 file using thunar and even when I set the SD lock in the other position, I still couldn't paste the file.

can you create a new file on the card at all? any file.

the output of the

Code: Select all

mount
command while the card is mounted might shed some light as well.

and is it one card or any card?

I tried another SD card of a smaller capacity but the same physical size. I did have the same pasting problem as I had with the larger capacity SD card which holds many MP3 files.

But here's the output for the smaller capacity SD card when running mount:

Code: Select all

Can you right-click in the SD card's mountpoint in your file manager and create a new text file?

I tried that in Dolphin. No luck. I'm told by Dolphin or my OS:
Could not write to /media/sps7/DD6D-9696/new text file on this SD card.part.

Does this problem have something to do with the other options available when one looks, in Dolphin in my case, at the properties for the SD card? Currently in the properties under Permissions, I'm both user and group. Is that wrong? In the upper part of Dolphin's Properties tab for the SD card, I can't change the Group entry to "Can view and modify content". It's only for me as user and owner that I have there "Can view and modify content" for me as user and owner. The other two entries there -- Group, Others -- only have
Can only view content.
Also, in the upper part of Dolphin's Properties tab for the SD card, I can't put a check mark in the box that reads "Only owner can rename and delete folder content". When I try to check that box, I get:
Could not change permissions for /media/sps7/DD6D-9696.

And finally, in the lower part of the Properties tab -- the part called Ownership -- I'm both user and group and the little box Apply changes to all subfolders and their contents can't be checked. If I try to check that box, I get:
Could not change permissions for /media/sps7/DD6D-9696/Strauss - Also sprach Zarathustra - Death and Transfiguration - Vienna Phil, G. Dudamel, Salzburg, 2014.mp3.

I examined the properties for that piece of music and can't see what's wrong there.

The mount options look to me like they are set to read only.

Why they are set to read only is a good question.

In Dolphin (looking at the SD card) > Properties > Permissions > Ownership, maybe it's not good that I'm both user and Group? I think early this year, I might have changed the Group to my username. What should the ownership for Group be for an SD card?

Run MX Tweak, click the Other tab, check the checkbox to enable mounting of internal drives by non-root users. Logout/in and see if that makes a difference.

JayM, I did as you instructed but still no luck: I still can't paste an MP3 file into the SD card.

Tell me: what should the group for an SD card usually be? As I mentioned here, for Dolphin (looking at the SD card) > Properties > Permissions > Ownership, my username is in the User line and in the Group line. Is that OK or not?

Can you open a terminal in /media and run

Code: Select all

ls -l
then do the same in /media/sps7 and /media/sps7/322D-9B28 and post the results? (Inside [code] [/code] tags of course.) I'm not interested in seeing your files on the card, just in seeing who owns them: whether it says you:you or root:root for the files and subdirectories in each of those directories, so you could just post that information if you prefer. No code tags required either if you do it that way. :smile:

While there was no /media/sps7/322D-9B28 (which might have been found when I had the lower capacity SD card in, not the one I want to put more MP3 files on), here, while the 16 GB SD card's in the card reader (this is the one I want to paste onto-- it now has > 1,300 MP3 files on it), are the outputs for the commands you gave me. For the lowest one below, I couldn't go to the start of the output in the terminal (since the number of lines was so huge), I just copied what I saw for one of the lines of output, a line I figure you want to see:

Code: Select all

/media# ls -l
total 8
drwxr-xr-x  2 root root 4096 Jul 26 12:32 sdb1
drwxr-x---+ 4 root root 4096 Aug 28 23:16 sps7

Code: Select all

/media/sps7# ls -l
total 308
drwxr-x--T 416 sps7 sps7  36864 Aug 21 01:49 data
drwxr-xr-x   3 sps7 sps7 278528 Dec 31  1969 DD6D-9696

Code: Select all

/media/sps7/DD6D-9696# ls -l
-rw-r--r-- 1 sps7 sps7

I don't know why the SD card shows up (above) as sdb1 while in kdf, in Gparted and in KDE Partition Manager it shows up as sdb.

Well, to tell the truth, I changed what you saw in the output, changing from a 4 letter real name from my birth to sps7 which is what I use here in this forum. I suppose you noticed something that made you ask me that question. Is there a problem because I made that change in those 3 outputs you asked for?

No, I just wanted to verify whether you were the owner of those directories rather than something named sp7 that wasn't you. So, it doesn't appear to be any sort of a directory permissions issue.

Can you back up the files on one of the two SD cards then reformat it using gparted and see if you can write to it afterward?

OK, I'll do that later. I have to go to sleep soon. What format should I pick for the 16 GB SD card I use for all those MP3 files?

The same file system as it already has, VFAT or FAT32, whichever it is now (assuming you plan to also insert the card in other devices like an mp3 player or something. If you plan to use this SD card exclusively in MX Linux you could format it as ext4 if you like.)

If reformatting the card doesn't fix in, create a new partition table on the SD card in gparted (in the Device dropdown menu) then format it again and retest it. You'll want an msdos partition table.

Maybe I'm wrong here but in post #5 I see:

Code: Select all

/dev/sdb1 on /media/sps7/322D-9B28 type vfat (ro,nosuid,nodev,relatime,uid=1000,gid=1000,fmask=0022,dmask=0022,codepage=437,iocharset=utf8,shortname=mixed,showexec,utf8,flush,errors=remount-ro,uhelper=udisks2)
And in post #13:

Code: Select all

/media# ls -l
total 8
drwxr-xr-x  2 root root 4096 Jul 26 12:32 sdb1
drwxr-x---+ 4 root root 4096 Aug 28 23:16 sps7
So is this device somehow mounted on /media/sdb1 and on /media/sps7/[UUID] ? Something wrong in /etc/fstab maybe?
Or is the sdb1 device in the second post another device than the SD card?
In any case I don't think it's normal to have a directory /media/sdb1 as you normally have /media/username/UUID

Good catch, tony37. Good eye. I didn't notice that.

@sps7, please post the contents of /etc/fstab. Do this prior to reformatting the SD card as you may not need to after all.

The SDcard is mounted read-only (ro), so you cannot write.

@sps7: You can also look at the output of

Code: Select all

dmesg
right after you inserted your SD card. There may be an error message there.
But there may be a wrong entry in /etc/fstab which will explain everything.

In case the answer to this problem will be quickly noticed, I'll first post here the two fstab text files I have in /etc:

In /etc my fstab:
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>

#Entry for /dev/sda1 :
UUID=1cd534e9-1eb1-487e-a761-e5f0043d114d / ext4 defaults,noatime 1 1
#Entry for /dev/sda4 :
UUID=8df2d69d-5b9e-4df5-8d81-5710628e894c /media/sps7/data ext4 defaults,nosuid,nodev,relatime 0 0
#Entry for /dev/sda3 :
UUID=1f3d44ad-c11f-4434-8792-6b38b586d83a /home ext4 defaults,noatime 1 2
UUID=244d52f0-32d3-4c7a-bc73-393a3d5cddf9 /media/sdb1 ext4 defaults 0 0
#Entry for /dev/sda2 :
UUID=271ab377-9b98-433c-a359-09bb793e0ba6 swap swap defaults 0 0

And in /etc there's this other fstab txt file, if it's important in this particular case: fstab-disk-manager-save
# Pluggable devices are handled by uDev, they are not in fstab
UUID=1cd534e9-1eb1-487e-a761-e5f0043d114d / ext4 defaults,noatime 1 1
UUID=1f3d44ad-c11f-4434-8792-6b38b586d83a /home ext4 defaults,noatime 1 2

Do you have any partition with UUID 244d52f0-32d3-4c7a-bc73-393a3d5cddf9 ? Maybe on another hard drive? or USB drive?
Anyway, I wouldn't mount anything at /media/sdb1

Re: Unable to put MP3 files onto SD card-- was able before latest MX

Code: Select all

UUID=244d52f0-32d3-4c7a-bc73-393a3d5cddf9 /media/sdb1 ext4 defaults 0 0
is this hte UUID for the sd card?

Code: Select all

sudo blkid
with the card inserted will list out the UUID.

if so, then the reason for the read-only mount is because there is a conflict with the fstab entry and the filesystem on the card, which would lead to an error condition, and the default mount options will mount read-only when there is an error condition to prevent damage.

That UUID string is my SD card. I see no partitions on it when I use KDE Partition and Gparted to examine it. I'm not well versed in the importance of UUID but I just ran the following, if it might help:

Code: Select all

$ blkid
/dev/sda1: LABEL="rootMX19" UUID="1cd534e9-1eb1-487e-a761-e5f0043d114d" TYPE="ext4" PARTLABEL="root" PARTUUID="0ade3dfa-e4c0-4498-80e2-5f158a68513c"
/dev/sda2: LABEL="swap" UUID="271ab377-9b98-433c-a359-09bb793e0ba6" TYPE="swap" PARTLABEL="swap" PARTUUID="418b6c8d-b4f2-4334-bcd5-82ec40f3b2f4"
/dev/sda3: LABEL="homeMX" UUID="1f3d44ad-c11f-4434-8792-6b38b586d83a" TYPE="ext4" PARTLABEL="home" PARTUUID="d5bab548-94dd-4490-bf44-14ef398aaa19"
/dev/sda4: LABEL="data" UUID="8df2d69d-5b9e-4df5-8d81-5710628e894c" TYPE="ext4" PARTLABEL="data" PARTUUID="71a44109-b360-491d-ad85-0ff949a5de86"
/dev/sdb: UUID="DD6D-9696" TYPE=

@sps7: you didn't print the whole output, something is missing after TYPE=
unless there are really no partitions on it

I would certainly remove that entry from /etc/fstab and for good measure do

Code: Select all

sudo rmdir /media/sdb1
edit: but first remove your SD card to avoid extra problems

I ran that command again and this time, do see the type-- it was there before but the way I have konsole set up I didn't get all of the output last time:

Code: Select all

$ blkid
/dev/sda1: LABEL="rootMX19" UUID="1cd534e9-1eb1-487e-a761-e5f0043d114d" TYPE="ext4" PARTLABEL="root" PARTUUID="0ade3dfa-e4c0-4498-80e2-5f158a68513c"
/dev/sda2: LABEL="swap" UUID="271ab377-9b98-433c-a359-09bb793e0ba6" TYPE="swap" PARTLABEL="swap" PARTUUID="418b6c8d-b4f2-4334-bcd5-82ec40f3b2f4"
/dev/sda3: LABEL="homeMX" UUID="1f3d44ad-c11f-4434-8792-6b38b586d83a" TYPE="ext4" PARTLABEL="home" PARTUUID="d5bab548-94dd-4490-bf44-14ef398aaa19"
/dev/sda4: LABEL="data" UUID="8df2d69d-5b9e-4df5-8d81-5710628e894c" TYPE="ext4" PARTLABEL="data" PARTUUID="71a44109-b360-491d-ad85-0ff949a5de86"
/dev/sdb: UUID="DD6D-9696" TYPE="vfat"

Strange you have /dev/sdb and not /dev/sdb1, do you still have files on your card?
Maybe time to print your output of

Code: Select all

dmesg
(starting from when you inserted your SD-card, in my case this starts with 'usb 1-1.4: new high-speed USB device number 7 using ehci-pci')

Yes, there are still all my MP3 files on the SD card. [I also have all of them backed up on an external SSD/USB-type storage device.]

So many lines to look over! I ran lsusb to find the card reader, so here's the output. I hope this is what's sought by you great MX helpers:

You could just have posted starting from [1512.151130], but ok.
The log says

Code: Select all

[ 1514.074667] sd 4:0:0:0: [sdb] Write Protect is on
which is exactly what I see in dmesg when I put the 'lock' on my SD card on, as explained in post #2.
So are you very very sure the lock isn't on?

How small is your SD card? is it a microSD that you put into an adapter?

I found this on the web:
Similarly, you might find that an old and well-worn card will have a lock switch that doesn't hold its position anymore, and may even get toggled just from the force of putting the card in a reader in the first place. You can just glue it in the "unlocked" position or carefully pull it out with a pair of tweezers to no ill effect (though the management disavows all responsibility if you snap your brand new $200 512 gig card in half). That card will never be locked again.
Is it possible you have this kind of problem, that the lock is enabled by the act of placing it in the pc?

I never use that lock but looked for images of both locked and unlocked. My SD card is in the unlocked position but I still can't paste any MP3 file onto it and I also found I can't re-format it. In case the maker of the card (Transcend) doesn't follow the convention for locked/unlocked, I pushed the button to the other end and still can't paste an MP3 file onto it. I opened KDE Partition Manager while the SD card is plugged in, then I unmounted it and tried to create a new msdos partition table but saw this KDE Partition Manager error message:
Job: Create new partition table on device ‘/dev/sdb’
Create new partition table on device ‘/dev/sdb’: Error
Create a new partition table (type: msdos) on ‘/dev/sdb’: Error
Running Gparted, I read that the SD card has a "read only file system".

I know that something changed in or for this SD card when I installed late last year the latest version of MX but I don't know what that could have been. I suppose I'll just send this SD card to Transcend to find out what's wrong with it.

I found a final thing you can try:

Code: Select all

sudo hdparm -r0 /dev/sdb
I found this on https://askubuntu.com/questions/101637/ ... ection-off

Thanks tony37.

Looking up troubles caused by card readers, I learned that they do break. A neighbor lent me his card reader and now I can paste MP3 files from Dolphin to the SD card-- I never suspected my card reader wasn't working properly. My card reader's shot and is now headed to some electronics recycler.
