SwampRabbit wrote: Tue Aug 04, 2020 2:31 pm Its been discussed on the dev side, the issue is time and people to implement, maintain, and support.

In order to do more cool fancy and possibly easier things... we need volunteers to offer time and resources.
That’s one of the catch-22s of volunteers, coordination.

If the issue isn’t ‘approved’ somewhere publicly and have a mechanism for “I’ll do that,” then volunteers won’t sign up to do it, as they don’t want to waste their time (and most by now have been burned before).

So, bigger issue:

Is there a list of ‘approved’ enhancements (for the forum in this case) where someone can ‘sign up’ as the volunteer in charge of getting it done?

The enhancement needs to have a general ‘goal,’ a set of must have’s, a set of we’d like these too, and if you’re feeling really froggy would you do these as well set.

Within the constraints of this forum, first thought is to create a new category

Development > General, Subforums: > Forum

And
  • Only allow ‘Admin’ types to create new topics.
  • Sticky post explaining that any topic is an approved enhancement with the rules.
  • Discussion until an ‘Admin’ ‘closes’ it and adds the full spec’s to the first post.
  • Volunteers sign up by posting in that topic (with ETA dates, so an admin can pick someone).
  • Some more junk probably needed...
  • Edit: Admin types quickly and severely prune OT post like my [ list] question :lipsrsealed:
That’d at least be easy to implement and visible to the average forum user (as opposed to the official bug tracker), so it’d likely get a larger volunteer base.

Best,
Michael

Michael, I don't think you were asking me, but not really my lane here...
Did pass this on though.

Rich,

If you need help, ask (I'll forget otherwise), I'm perfectly willing to help/discuss/etc. Probably even code some of the stuff (phpBB is writing in PHP, so it's up my ally).

Best!,

The problem with unique coding is; when we upgrade versions of phpBB there is no guarantee that it will work. Therefore we stay with approved extensions and do not add any foreign code.
