use of ceni causes problems if you use network-manager, so we don't include it.
you can configure your net connection with the nmcli utility. there is also a ncurses interface with nmtui (run in terminal).
@dolphin
Just did a fresh install of MX-19 on the x220 rebooted for the first time ended up at tty, logged in and ran nmtui took a bit to work out but after ignoring the first screen, then ending up at the second screen which was more familiar to me. Entered password and all was good.
Is ending up at tty after installing and first boot normal for MX-19. This has happened on every install of 19 X220 video intel and Desktop machine is nvidia gtx970. Will not boot to the desktop until a sudo apt update and upgrade..?

It wouldn't be normal no. If you get a desktop running live you should get one when installed.
When running live please post the output of the quick system info tool. As well as the contents of any etc/X11/xorg.conf file that may be present.

Here you go. The only thing I can think of is I did select safe video mode from the installer. But I always do this mainly because of my gtx970 won't boot to the installer desktop without nomodeset just a cursor and black screen.
Also this never happens with antiX or Debian 10 after installing just boots straight to the desktop even with safe video mode.
But it is no biggie I like the challenge. Thanks for the nmtui entered to my MX-tips file.

ok and running live:
your system is using vesa on the live side. I wonder if that carried over to install.
on the installed system, see if the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file is present.
the install and live system for antiX and MX is the same, but antiX does use an older kernel. there were some changes in how nomodeset works between 4.9 and 4.19.
