Vivaldi tips & tricks

#1 Post by Eadwine Rose »

I have a fun thing for you all who use Vivaldi. I wager you already found that feature, but it cannot hurt to chuck it in here for those who want it.

Google Chrome lets you add a cast button to the toolbar, nice when you have a Chromecast. Those who want one in Vivaldi are left lacking.... or are they?... ;)

How to add a Chromecast button in Vivaldi

Go to settings, quick commands, scroll down to command chains.
In there click the plus icon, give the thing a name, Cast, and select the command Cast.
DO NOT click test chain, that'll crash the browser. Made me think it didn't work.. it does.
Just close the settings window.

Then right-click on your profile image, customize toolbar.
In the drop-down click Command Chains, you'll find the one just created, and can drag it to the spot you want, and click done.

Could be as easy as that, and you're done.

But I wanted a cast icon, so I got a 28x28 fitting bitmap thingie from here: https://developers.google.com/cast/docs ... s_optional
I edited the color I wanted (grey) in Gimp since I wanted a connected icon, but with an open inside, just like in Chrome. Maybe I didn't look far enough into the folders, could have been there already, anyway, I made one. ;)

Then go to settings, click themes.
Click the Editor tab, and then about 4 lines down or so there is another line of tabs, one says icons, click that.
Scroll all the way down, and there is your creation. Click that, and click on the 28x28 image to put a new one in there, done.
Close the settings window.

Now right-click on your profile image, customize toolbar etc., drag it in place, click done, and voilà: one cast icon in my toolbar now:

When I click on it, I get the same pop-up window I get when I go into the menu on the top left, File - Cast..

Nicely done. I have no idea what I personally would do with it, but I like Vi's flexibility and your ingenuity.

Well.. if you have repetitive actions you can create a keyboard shortcut or a button like I did to click on to perform those actions.

Personally, I don't know what other uses there are since I don't need them.. but here is an example of a chain that can be created: https://vivaldi.com/blog/tips/desktop-tips/tip-518/

I have never explored all that, thanks.

I had another thing going on.

In Chrome, where I selected the text in the address bar, it would copy it straight up, and I could middle-click elsewhere to paste. For some reason that doesn't work in Vivaldi (or I was just misremembering in Chrome). I have to multiple click select and.. anyway, lots of fussing before it took.

I had installed an extension that I could click an icon next to the address bar that would do the select&copy for me. Yeah right click and such was too much effort ;)

I discovered an alternative to that so I can do this without having to resort to an extension, using the same quick commands section to make that cast button (source link: https://forum.vivaldi.net/post/710330)

How to add a copy address bar URL button in Vivaldi

Go to settings, quick commands, scroll down to command chains.
In there click the plus icon, give the thing a name, Copy URL, and select the first command: Focus Address Field
Click the little + icon above that dropdown in the top right
A new command line appears (2), in there: Delay, 10 (adjust from 1000 to 10)
Click the little + icon again

New command line appears (3), this one gets: Copy
New command line (4): Delay, 10
New command line (5): Focus Page

You should now have 5 command lines in there, in short:

Focus Address Field
Delay, 10
Copy
Delay, 10
Focus Page

This is what that looks like:

DO NOT click test chain, that'll likely crash the browser again like with the cast button. We'll test it when the button has been added.
Close the settings window.

Then right-click on your profile image, customize toolbar.
In the drop-down click Command Chains, you'll find the one just created, drag it to the spot you want, and click done.

It works the same way as how I explained with the cast button to create a new icon. If you happen to find that a bit large for the toolbar, open the icon in Gimp and enlarge the canvas around it. The thing will always make a 28 x 28 image, so having empty space in the icon itself taking up some space will make the icon look smaller.

Here is what it looks like for me, on the left side of the address bar. Clicking that icon will now copy the address bar URL.

Wow, pretty impressive. Being a lazy bastard, I currently just click in the address to highlight it and go with Ctrl + C -- but now I want to take a look at your creation!

Most used sites in Vivaldi

Most used sites tip:

You may find this useful "pin" most used sites to the address bar. It puts an icon of the site there.

Yup- I use it a lot, but more so in Chrome - I'm forced to use Chrome at work, so there are *many* more pins in my work browser. I only have a few in Vivaldi, but they are useful.

@richb @Eadwine Rose what do you think of combining the two Vivaldi t threads into a single "Vivaldi tips" thread somewhere?

I have no objections to that. Tips and Tricks would be the logical choice.
