That looks OK for the wi-fi, but those "287 not upgraded yet" is not good.

I'd sure like to see the terminal output of the attempted upgrade. Those firmware messages are not errors, just harmless warnings. Note that there's a "W" for warning for each, not "E".

You appear to have a combined root and home partition, so there's lots of free space.

Also, which kernel are you trying to add? Another user reported that the latest 6.1.0-35 from Debian required "nowatchdog" be added to the boot options in order to boot.

Try this instead

Code: Select all

sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade
Will do and report accordingly thanks S.

Stevo,
I have tried various kernels all resulting in issues that manifest with a non-graphical boot necessitating as I've mentioned, a Timeshift restore.
I note your nowatchdog suggestion and will also try that and let you know how I go.

Stevo,
I'd sure like to give you the entire terminal output (how would you suggest I do that?). In regards to the combined root and home partition, when I set the system up I just followed the auto partitioning so never really got a chance to alter that. Now it is in place and to take advantage of the lots of free space, any suggestions on how to proceed would be welcome.

Hello again all,
Well, I've tried siamie's suggestion of sudo apt ... etc ... I believe I'd tried that before siamhie but what you were suggesting was probably in response to a typo I'd made earlier.
Anyway, on this occasion (and this has happened before) all the 287 not upgrade were upgraded however, the whole process reaches a conclusion with the following ...
W: Possible missing firmware /lib/firmware/amdgpu/hainan_smc.bin for module amdgpu
W: Possible missing firmware /lib/firmware/amdgpu/oland_k_smc.bin for module amdgpu

...
And this is now before I reboot and fully expecting a non-graphical boot up and having then to resort to Timeshift. I will try the nowatchdog switch at boot up but I'm not sure it will fix the non-graphical interface. What happens (if past performance is any guide at least) is my bootup screens are in a lower res than normal and then stalls at the command line from where I have to invoke Timeshift.

Well I'm afraid I'm left in the awkward position of not being able to do a conventional/routine apt update/upgrade. This is because each time something that appears to be connected with the aforementioned missing firmware and/or the mediatek or realtek drivers, the system once rebooted loses its normal resolution and in fact won't boot into the graphical xfce environment. This of course means I have to then resort to Timeshift from the command line which succeeds in getting me back to the GUI but sans the upgrades I had intended. The only way I can upgrade is to judiciously select from mxpi pertinent upgrades (firefox et al) and stay away from anything that wants to build a new header, kernel or init.
There's been no further posts other than this my latest in this thread so if noone else has anything to contribute I will shortly close the thread. Wish there was an unresolved flag or at least a resolved flag as the solved flag isn't always appropriate.

There is a new one now, 37, I upgraded to that without issues.

Your upgrade takes place in Synaptic or MXPI, you can run it again and get the terminal output from there.

Well ER, the contagion if I may call it that has now spread to a second platform where I run MX. Using the mxpi and just selecting upgradable packages (four were there) yielded that plethora of warnings about amdgpu files and an upgrade of the initramfs. Upon reboot I'm left at the command line and having (again) to resort to Timeshift. There must be something contained in the upgrade process that causes this but darned if I can determine what it is. Here's the output of the latest routine and I've edited for brevity the full missing firmware list which is extensive on this platform at least ...
update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-6.5.0-1mx-ahs-amd64
W: Possible missing firmware /lib/firmware/radeon/R520_cp.bin for module radeon
W: Possible missing firmware /lib/firmware/radeon/RS600_cp.bin for module radeon...

I should add in here the QSI for this second platform. Now, through a process of elimination, it appears to me that whenever a new init is built the problem occurs. On this occasion the file that caused the collapse was intel-microcode.
