It was weirdly quite annoying to actually get ahold of these wallpapers. I thought they would just be freely available online. Nope.
So I decided to check the latest Debian version that had KDE 4, which was Debian 7 Wheezy. Should be no sweat. Nope. I couldn't find where to download older Debian releases on the official website.
Finally found out where to download the full Debian KDE DVD ISO. Then I get VirtualBox and spin up a quick VM. "This should be a total breeze now," I thought. Nope. NS_ERROR_FAILURE when trying to passthrough a USB stick to the VM when it's fully booted. I install the VB extension pack. Passthrough still doesn't work. Launch VB as root. Still doesn't work. Tried to install the VB Guest Additions. Doesn't work.
Maybe VB just doesn't support Debian 7 or something? I don't know. I'm kinda mad though at this point, not gonna lie. So I said, "Screw it," and I slapped the ISO onto my Ventoy drive to boot into it. Doesn't even boot. Something about a wrong or missing image file. I don't know. I'm getting increasingly mad now at this point.
I finally have to resort to opening the ISO file in Ark and then extracting the squashfs file, and THEN extracting that using "sudo unsquashfs -f -d /media/location1 ~/Desktop/filesystem.squashfs". And THEN I FINALLY get access to the damn files.
After that, I just browsed to /usr/share/wallpapers and started pulling. I saved all the original wallpapers at their highest resolutions onto my drive though, so if anyone wants to have them too, let me know and I'll upload them to my site. And if anyone knows what the hell was going on with VirtualBox, also let me know.

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.

Re: My Pain of Trying to Obtain the KDE 4 Default Wallpapers
That has user-submitted wallpapers as well as the default wallpapers. It would be like trying to find a needle in a haystack. Especially since the search on that site doesn't seem very good either. In any case though, don't worry. I already have them all.

Maybe try here. https://archive.org/details/default-wal ... rs-master/
This is my Fluxbox . There are many others like it, but this one is mine. My Fluxbox is my best friend. It is my life.
I must master it as I must master my life. Without me, my Fluxbox is useless. Without my Fluxbox, I am useless.

These are all KDE 5.x+ wallpapers. No 4.x wallpapers are in there.siamhie wrote: Tue Jan 28, 2025 12:53 pm Maybe try here. https://archive.org/details/default-wal ... rs-master/

Debian keeps everything forever at snapshot.debian.org: https://snapshot.debian.org/archive/deb ... deartwork/
MXPI = MX Package Installer
QSI = Quick System Info from menu
The MX Test repository is mostly backports; not the same as Debian testing

Re: My Pain of Trying to Obtain the KDE 4 Default Wallpapers
That is handy, though I would say it is in a .deb file which is rather clunky if you just wanted the wallpapers. Or just the default wallpapers and nothing else.Stevo wrote: Tue Jan 28, 2025 1:45 pm Debian keeps everything forever at snapshot.debian.org: https://snapshot.debian.org/archive/deb ... deartwork/
Re: My Pain of Trying to Obtain the KDE 4 Default Wallpapers
I can extract a deb file with Ark, but I'm sure it can be done in the terminal.
They also exist in the original source files: https://snapshot.debian.org/package/kdeartwork/

Oh, I didn't know Ark could do that. Will file that away for later.Stevo wrote: Tue Jan 28, 2025 3:07 pm I can extract a deb file with Ark, but I'm sure it can be done in the terminal.

Yeah, I'm lazy, and found out I can extract debs and other archives with Ark in Dolphin by dragdropping the file's icon to an empty spot in Dolphin, and choosing "Extract Here" in the context menu that pops up. That also works with the same duo in XFCE, not just KDE.Arnox wrote: Tue Jan 28, 2025 3:13 pmOh, I didn't know Ark could do that.
