a process is being held - what does that mean?

#1 Post by pax-eterna »

Trying to install an app and added the required repo but when I run the first instruction (below) i get " Waiting for cache lock: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock-frontend. It is held by process 32378"

This is the full instruction set from the developer at github (page https://github.com/Anjok07/ultimatevocalremovergui )
sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt install ffmpeg
sudo apt install python3-pip
sudo apt-get -y install python3-tk
pip3 install -r requirements.txt
python3 UVR.py

it sounds like some other process or program may be trying to update or keeping that lock in place. you could check

Code: Select all

ps aux | grep 32378
to see what the process is. sometimes just having a gui program like synaptic package manager open can cause that. or maybe the system updater could be running in the background.

You can't have two people driving the same car, and you can't have two different people changing your system. One person might be installing software that depends on a library the other person is in the middle of removing. To avoid this, Debian uses locks: only one program can add or remove things at once. You can still add one thing and remove the other, but do it in serial, not in parallel.

All this error is saying is that there is already a process, like dpkg, apt, apt-get, nala, or something else, with PID 32378, that is making system changes. The easiest way to eliminate this warning is to reboot, but in most cases that isn't necessary. Just wait for whatever program that has PID 32378 to exit.

EDIT: fixed quoting

Debian has also disabled PIP Python package downloads starting with Bookworm, for security reasons--here is the secure workaround using virtualenv: https://www.physik.fu-berlin.de/en/serv ... ep668.html
MXPI = MX Package Installer
QSI = Quick System Info from menu
The MX Test repository is mostly backports; not the same as Debian testing

This is the full instruction set from the developer ...
Key takeaway: It's important to critically evaluate the information you find online to avoid any unexpected surprises.

Yes, I just sorta assumed Git-Hub is a reasonably secure source

haha, that just give me a whole new set of numbers and codes that mean nothing to me :)

if you post the output you got from that command, someone here may be able to help you figure out how to interpret it and possibly fix what isn't working correctly.
