Fast internet while downloading - Slow browsing

#1 Post by pteroglossus »

Hi,

Browsing on any browser (Firefox, Thorium, Librewolf) on MXLinux 23 has been really slow for me. I'm able to download torrents, for example, at around 3-4 MB/s, but internet pages take 5-20 seconds to load. Duckduckgo searches take 5-10 seconds.

Online speed tests give the following results:

Download speed: 20.48 Mbps
Upload speed: 29.52 Mbps

Browsing is faster on my Win10 VM, but not as fast I think it should be.

I'm using ProtonVPN on both Linux and the Windows VM.

Any idea what could cause such difference between downloading and browsing?

See below my quick system info:

Try it without the VPN. A lot of ISPs discourage VPN use by throttling them.
HP 15; ryzen 3 5300U APU; 500 Gb SSD; 8GB ram
HP 17; ryzen 3 3200; 500 GB SSD; 12 GB ram
Idea Center 3; 12 gen i5; 256 GB ssd;

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.

Also it could be worth a test on some other free, fast public wi-fi network with the VPN. Our local county library is way fast, though they block torrents, bad sites, and some other stuff for no apparent reason. Like this streaming webcam of a restaurant on a river: https://tahoetopia.com/webcam/river-ranch-raft-cam

Test on a LiveUSB there, or even at home, to see if that's a factor.
