Can IceWM on MX-23 work with IceWM tools developed for Antix?

#1 Post by Durhammer »

I'm becoming more enamored of IceWM as my WM/DE in my MX-23 (Fluxbox edition) installation on my resource-constrained HP Stream 13 notebook. I'm trying to keep things as light but as useful as possible. So far, so good. Not a big fan of the native IceWM menuing, so I installed jgmenu after following many, many posts and threads by @PPC , mostly on the AntiX forum. I'm wondering if his FT10-transformation setup and icewm-manager setup have been used in an MX (-23) environment? Or does it rely on the AntiX milieu to work properly? I CAN edit config files, scripts, and such, but I've got a life to live (farmer, granddad, aging rock band member, etc.), so love to live the easy life via GUIs when I can. Will these tools work on MX? Are there others to consider?!?! Thanks in advance!

They are just zipped files and can be unzipped and ran if set to be excuteable

Code: Select all

harry@antix23.1runit:~
$ cd Test
harry@antix23.1runit:~/Test
$ ls
Adwaita-darkred.zip                         inxi-gui-updated.zip
antiX_conky_managerV101b                    nu_ICE_pack_1.1.tar
antiX_conky_managerV101b.zip                nu_ICE_pack_1.1.tar.tar
ft10-transformation_2.b1_all-22-4-2024.deb  oreo-spark-green-cursors
FX-darkred.zip                              oreo-spark-green-cursors.tar.gz
Gothic2.0                                   oreo-spark-pink-cursors
Gothic2.0.tar.gz                            oreo-spark-pink-cursors.tar.gz
inxi-gui-updated
harry@antix23.1runit:~/Test
So you can test em out yourself to see if they work. Don't try the .deb file like on mine.

Thanks, @rokytnji.1 ! don't have anything except icewm-manager-gui-v52 and earlier files (from a long post/thread). I have a vague recollection of where to get FT10. I'll see if I can find that, too and give it a try after the icewm-manager. Thanks again for the reply.

EDIT/UPDATE: Hey, @rokytnji.1 -- is there a particular location the zip file contents should be extracted to? Any ol' place, as long as it's executable? Or somewhere in your $PATH?

Okay, @rokytnji.1 -- I got it working, though I'm missing at least a couple of his extra scripts: icewm-toolbar-icon-manager and icewm-quick-personal-menu-manager. I like the theme selector way better than the native icewm menu selection: first, the menu is complete and scrollable rather than nested (still have the default 21 items option), and second, it just returns to the GUI after selecting/setting the theme. HOWEVER, seems I just found a bug with that -- if you do this enough times, you wind up choking the script's selector, and all you get is a window filled with file locations. Just a small ;) example:

Code: Select all

$ ./icewm-manager-gui-v52
/home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/18k/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/708090/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/Aalglatt/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/aesthetech-big/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/aesthetech/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/aeteria/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/Anon/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/aquablue/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/Arc-Dark/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/Area51/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/axxlite/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/BerryXP/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/blueCrux/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/blueHeart/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/bluemetal2/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/BlueObscure/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/bluePlastic/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/Chicago/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/CoolSteel/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/Crux-Teal/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/daniel3/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/daniel4/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/daniel5/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/device/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/dotFLAT/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/dusk/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/easy/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/ElbergBlue/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/ElbergGreen/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/ElbergRed/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/fake95/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/faux95/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/Flames95/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/FrostyG/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/GlamICE/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/gnomeish/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/gradient1/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/green/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/gtk2/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/IceBlueCurve/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/IceBlueOkayish/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/IceCrack2/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/IceGnome2/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/jaywalk/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/Durhammer-mac/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/kaos/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/K-ath-Leen/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/kde2/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/LightBox/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/liQuid/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/mavvert/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/metal-big/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/metal/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/metal-small/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/mozmodern/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/Natural/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/nice2/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/nice/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/No.15/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/OpenLook-shaped/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/paranoia/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/pkde2/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/pkde/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/shiceMavvert/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/SilverXP/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/SkyBox/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/slashdot/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/Slashdot/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/small/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/sortofaqua/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/spiffICE/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/tile/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/tin/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/tubes/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/twilite/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/unusualscars/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/Urbicande/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/warp3/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/warp3x/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/warp4/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/WhistlerX/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/Wigren/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/win95-dark/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/XPBlue/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/xp/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/xp-new/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/XPSilver/default.theme /home/Durhammer/.icewm/themes/yak/default.theme
Not sure what it is I need to clear. Guess I'll have to dig into the script a little bit....

I just extract zip files in my test folder. Easy for to remember and find. They are enclosed scripts so do no harm there.
When you extract the zip it gives you folder with apps name and the script sits inside.
Icewm tool bar manager and Icewm Icon manager comes with the antiX 23.2 upgrade I just got to.
They sit in menu>antiX. Conky colors and stuff I run in ~/Test.

Thanks, but remember, I'm on MX, not its sibling. ;) I'll do some searching, maybe I'll find them, and the FT10 thingy.

I was mistaken that MX and antiX shared a forum, so thanks for that reminder. Gargoyle knew. I have the script, and it appears to need "a few small repairs" (apologies, Ms. Colvin!). Anti-X specific files, apps, icons, etc. Probably won't get 'em all, but I'll try. For some reason, I thought he made use of jgmenu, but I don't see it in this version (January 2021). Quite lengthy dissertation about just getting started! :)

What's wrong with the .deb package, BTW? I see I wasted my effort in downloading the January 2022 version. Paulo made a huge number of incremental updates. The latest of the .zip files are from 5 months ago, "...v2b5-t23.zip" and "...v2b5-t24-startupE.zip" and the names to me seem to imply that they do different things! Guess I'll hafta download both and scan them to see....

I said that because I am on antiX and you are on MX Fluxbox.
I just figured a .zip file was safer to test than a .deb.
