Suddenly Can't Restart or Shut Down via the Menu
Re: Suddenly Can't Restart or Shut Down via the Menu
HP 15; ryzen 3 5300U APU; 500 Gb SSD; 8GB ram
HP 17; ryzen 3 3200; 500 GB SSD; 12 GB ram
Idea Center 3; 12 gen i5; 256 GB ssd;
In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.

Just adding my two cents.Adrian wrote: Mon Aug 19, 2024 6:28 am Sounds like something stopped working, like dbus or authentication daemon. not sure what or why.
If you've notice my thread about a black/blank screen boot then you'll know that I have seen this too. In my case I had created a (they call it) frankenlinux or whatever). Basic concept is dysfunctional sysVinit; fully-functional systemd. Using console to get to dysfunctional sysVinit desktop leaves only option on the main button being to log out (ie not shut down or restart).
I'm not skilled enough to resolve it, but in my "looking" for the problem I did encounter a dbus error issue. (You mentioned it. I'm concurring. That's all. It may not be anything, or it may be more.)

Sorry, adding another 2 cents. (So? I like even numbers.)Adrian wrote: Mon Aug 19, 2024 6:28 am Sounds like something stopped working, like dbus or authentication daemon. not sure what or why.
I just notice something while responding to Dolphin_Oracle here
Code: Select all
https://forum.mxlinux.org/viewtopic.php?t=79871&start=70
(D.O. is helping with my dysfunctional sysVinit system; systemd works beautifully.)
Notice in my response with output (from his recommended command to me) the lines for a package removal...
Code: Select all
The following packages will be REMOVED:
dbus-broker systemd-sysv
Apart from other problems, ONLY "Logout" being available to quit is interesting. Is it not?
(Again; could be nothing.)
Regards,
