MX-23.2_ahs_x64.iso installer will not boot

#1 Post by james »

After using Ubuntu for several years, I decided to move to another flavor of Linux, and Mx Linux seemed the best choice. I first loaded it on an old machine to test it; it was a very easy and fast load, easily configured, and I was able to load the apps I wanted and they worked flawlessly. So I decided Mx Linux is definitely what I want to switch to. I built my current machine in May 2022, and the parts are
Motherboard: Gigabyte Z690 Aero G DDR4 Motherboard
CPU: Intel Core i9 12900K 16 Cores/32 Threads Desktop Processor
Graphics Card: EVGA RTX 3070 Ti FTW3 Ultra 8GB 4K GPU
RAM (Memory): SP XPower 64GB (4x16) 3200MHz RGB DDR4 Desktop Gaming Memory
SSD: WD Black SN850 1TB GEN4 NVME PCI-Express Internal SSD

I downloaded MX-23.2_ahs_x64.iso, burned it to a flash drive with Ubuntu Startup Disk Creator, and attempted to boot from it. It got to the flash screen where I chose Mx-23.2 ahs x64 (January 21, 2024) with boot options are quiet, splasht, nosplash.
I click on it and press Alt F1 to display the process, which is:
INIT: Version 3.06 booting
INIT: No initab.d directory found
Using makefile-style concurrent boot in runlevel S
mount: /sys/firmware/efi/efivars: none already mounted or mount point busy
dmesg(1) may have more information after failed mount system call
Starting hotplug events dispatcher: systemd-udevd.
Sythesizing the initial hotplug events (subsystems)...done
Sythesizing the initial hotplug events (devices)...done
Waiting for /dev to be fully populated...

The machine hangs there

I have tried debugging this myself and gotten nowhere. So my question is, is my 2 year old hardware still too recent for the MX-23.2_ahs_x64.iso and I must wait until the next release, or can someone suggest a path forward?
Thank you for any help

So, is it the installer hanging or a hang on boot? Because the thread title and what you're suggesting are two completely different things, not related to each other at all.

In case it's the installer hanging, let's try the following:
  1. Boot into the live desktop for MX AHS ISO.
  2. Run the installer. Before clicking on anything else, have the Live Log tab open. You can maximise the installer.
  3. Start the install. When it freezes, open the Quick System Info utility
  4. Ensure Quick System Info and minstall.log are selected. Save the zip file.
  5. Post the zip file here.
If it is a hang on boot, see if the regular non-AHS ISO works, although your hardware is fairly new so AHS should be fine in theory.

Sorry - a hang on boot then, because it never gets to the live desktop. As for the non-AHS ISO, I tried that as well, with the same result. So, the non-AHS ISO worked fine for my old machine, and failed for my new machine (which led me to switch to the AHS ISO which also failed). The new machine has been running Ubuntu for almost a year and does not have boot problems, but when trying the MX installer on the new machine I get nowhere. I tried Boot-Repair on a flash drive, it loads fine and does not find any problems.

As mentioned, you have try to boot the LiveUSB which fails, not the "MX installer"
The MX Installer is available on the LiveBooted System. So the MX installer did not fail, b/c you can't liveBoot..
Anyway, as you can not show QSI (Quick System Info tool), we can only guess what the issue may be:

* first the MX AHS iso wil not boot when SecureBoot is enbled
-> wo you may go int the PC BIOS/UEFI system setup and turn off SecureBoot

* The none AHS iso "MX-23.3_x64.iso", does boot with enabled SecureBoot, but the installed systerm would
require to have SecureBoot disabled (without any manual secureboot related adjustments.)

* Next, in case SATA/RAID ( Intels RST) is enabled, the Live System (but also the installed system) may have trouble to see the drives,
so it may be needed to switch from SATA/RAID to SATA/AHCI. Note some user do report that they can install and boot with enabled RST/RAID

* Next in case GPU/ graphics card issue, the live system may have not all module yet available to boot,
so next try the Advanced -> Failsafe boot options

* Next in case that's dual video cards issue try the Advanced -> Boot Options-> vcard=on
and select the the proper GPU

* there is also an intel b(l)acklight issue, where the screen stays black or fairly dark, so try also the backlight boot options.

fehlix,
Secure Boot was set to Custom, which I think means it was off. I was not using SATA/RAID or dual video cards. I believe what got the LiveUSB to boot was the Advanced -> Failsafe boot option you suggested. So, thank you, I now have MX installed and working on my newer computer. I am very happy that I do not need to wait for the next MX release to switch from Ubuntu.
Thanks again, James

@fehlix Thanks for that info. Using "failsafe" boot option helped me install the AHS to my new system.
