short cuts on desktop on desktop

#1 Post by seymoursax »

Hello everyone, I would appreciate some help with this. Iam running AV LINUX MX EDITION 21.1 "Consciousness". Ive search and searched and cannot find a straight answer how to do this.
HOW CAN I SHOW MY SHORTCUTs on the desktop like Ive been used to in previous OS. Also to remove on the desktop the menu on the right side that has the time and date etc

Also I would like to add a partition to my HD, and the answers I see on line are for TECKS answering TECKS ,not the newbie.
Ive lost many times my OS while trying to install a new partition using gParted. I want to try out the new AVmX 23.1 without damaging my current AVMX 21.1

I miss the days of long ago when testing LINUX UBUNTU STUDIO where you would be asked if you want to "install alongside your current OS"
I appreciate your help. God bless you

Hi,

Just so I am clear, are you asking how to create Desktop launchers on AV Linux 21 or AV Linux 23? They use different Desktop Environments so the methods are different..

WOW!! quick response, thank you. This is a perfect example of what Iam talking about..What is " Desktop launchers"? All Iam asking is how to put my short cuts for quick access to my favorite programs on my desktop like I use to..The option was always there..."Do you want to create a desktop short cut"
Iam not as experienced in the different program descriptions. As the saying goes..."Iam a simple guy" Thank you and God bless you.
ps I LOVE MY AV MXLINUX I use mostly for running music recording software.

Hi,

Well same thing, different terminology. In Windows you would say 'shortcut' in Linux we say 'launcher'... at the end of the day it's an Icon on the Desktop you want to clickety-click on to run the program you want to use..

If you are using AV Linux 21.1 it used 'Openbox' for it's Window Manager.. Openbox unfortunately does not support Desktop shortcuts so on that particular version of AV Linux MX Edition this was not possible (and yes, that made a lot of people mad at me... :bagoverhead: ). The next release of AV Linux (21.3) restored the xfwm Window Manager and xfdesktop which restored the ability to place launchers/shortcuts on the Desktop. So the short answer is 21.1 doesn't support that...

The newest AV Linux release (23.1) using Enlightenment Desktop Environment is able to support Desktop shortcuts/launchers.

Hello again, I hope you are all well. Is there a keyboard combination for shutting down the computer. I used to do ALT F4 which would bring up the shut down options, I would just hit the enter button, and, done...Now I have to use the mouse to bring up the shut down menu, then hit enter. Thank you and God bless you

Alt+F4 usually works for me, though some keyboards need Fn+Alt+F4. On the Xfce desktop that brings up the screen for Exit Options and you would probably need to tab twice to select Shutdown before hitting enter.
Production: MX-23 Xfce, AMD FX-4130 Quad-Core, GeForce GT 630/PCIe/SSE2, 16 GB, SSD 120 GB, Data 1TB
Personal: Lenovo X1 Carbon with MX-23 Fluxbox
Other: Raspberry Pi 5 with MX-23 Xfce Raspberry Pi Respin
