Xkill doesn't work.

#1 Post by Mauser »

I just noticed that Xkill doesn't work. When I hit Ctrl + Alt + Esc I get no response. I have not changed any of the settings for Xkill. Does anyone know the fix for it?

only thing I can think is to make sure the keyboard shortcut is still defined in Keyboard->Application Shortcuts

Ditto -DO
Does xkill itself not work, or doesn't xkill open?
If it's the later, (but I'm on MX-21.3 Xfce), it's in Keyboard → Application Shortcuts - Ctrl + Alt + Esc.

I see it in Settings > Keyboard and when I check in Edit in the Command box it says xkill. I don't know anything about it's path. When I hit Ctrl + Alt + Esc on the keyboard it does absolutely nothing. No response what so ever.

I'm stating the obvious, but….

Is " Ctrl + Alt + Esc" listed as the shortcut?
Obviously, if not, re-enter it as the command.
Could you have overridden it by using it for another Keyboard → Application Shortcuts recently?
Or Window Manager → Keyboard → Shortcut? Recently.

Maybe delete it from Keyboard → Application Shortcuts and then re-enter it as the shortcut.

Are one of those keys dead?
OK – now I'm really reaching.

Good Luck!

Does it work from a terminal?
This is my Fluxbox . There are many others like it, but this one is mine. My Fluxbox is my best friend. It is my life.
I must master it as I must master my life. Without me, my Fluxbox is useless. Without my Fluxbox, I am useless.

For me when it comes to working with software it's not obvious for me. While I usually build my own desktop computers I am not good with software. I am good with hardware but horrible with working with software. I will give it a try. "Is " Ctrl + Alt + Esc" listed as the shortcut?" I hope I am following what you are saying correctly. In Settings > Keyboard it's listed in there.

"Could you have overridden it by using it for another Keyboard → Application Shortcuts recently?" No, because as I stated earlier that I haven't changed anything. I have a verified MX Linux ISO I installed which I had originally issues downloading a good copy of MX Linux that the hash matches which I posted that issue here months ago that was resolved.
"Maybe delete it from Keyboard → Application Shortcuts and then re-enter it as the shortcut." No, since I have not troubled it.

Your reaching is good because you might be onto something. "Are one of those keys dead?" Since I don't use keyboard shortcuts I don't know the answer to that question. If I hit only Ctrl nothing happens, if I hit only Alt I get a response, if I hit Esc I get no response. Is there a way to check these keys if they are working properly or not?

I don't know because I could never figure out how to use the terminal and I am going all the way back to 1981. I have had many bad experience with the terminal. How do I do that?

Yes, there are many ways to test.

Simply copy something (say this sentence) with Ctrl + C then paste to somewhere .. Next time use the other Ctrl key.

Probably one is not pressing (working).

(Or in a terminal issue xev then press it , then the other one, observe if it senses it/them )

Thanks. It seems some of the keys on my keyboard don't work.
