kernel update 6.1.0-18 has problems with nvidia drivers

#1 Post by dolphin_oracle »

users of nvidia drivers may want to avoid the latest debian standard kernel update 6.1.0-18. the debian nvidia drivers do not build correctly on it.

you can avoid the auto update by removing the

linux-image-amd64 and the linux-headers-amd64 packages. your kernel will not be removed, but auto updates will be disabled.

I am monitoring the debian situation andi will post later updates here

supposedly debian is patching the nvidia drivers and will do an update.

I'm honestly a little confused about what is going on there, given that the nvidia drivers still build on 6.1.0-17 and on the later kernels we have in ahs. very weird.

**edit** apparently is a upstream kernel change backported to the debian 6.1.

They sure are messing about with the nvidia combo of late, that is for sure!

What is the working version number of the package that DOES work?

if you have kernel 6.1.0-18, then you will watch for nvidia-driver (525.147.05-6)

I meant the package number with the fixed 18 kernel that you see in Synaptic for instance, so I know which version works :)

Got 6.1.76-1 in there at the mo, available.

they aren't going to do anything to the kernel. linux-image-6.1.0-17 is the last one that works with the current nvidia drivers.

Oh ok.. hmm interesting, one would say they would ensure nvidia would build on it, so we're waiting for an nvidia update now then.

Thanks. :)

so the nvidia-driver package has not been migrated into stable yet, but its getting close. testing revealed a problem with the 525.147.05-6 package in that it broke tesla-470 detection (probably in nvidia-detect) which might not have affected MX and antiX but would have affected debian.

the new version with that fixed is 525.147.05-7~deb12u1 and is currently waiting to be approved to be included in the debian main repo.
