Wlan issue on LenovoIdeapad-1 15AMN7 Laptop

#1 Post by bidral »

Dear friends,
Take greetings. I recently got a Lenovo Ideapad-1-15AMN7 laptop. Installed Linux Mint Cinnamon on it. But not satisfied. Now I want to install MXlinux 23.2 KDE. Live test with pen drive found that Wlan is not working. Wi-Fi network can be used if external dongle is used. Want to know the solution before installing on ssd. Will the WiFi problem be solved by the advice in this link (https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspot.c ... k.html#ID9)?

thanks in advance

Here is my system info

It just suggests an alternative driver, so you can try on current/any distro:

Code: Select all

git clone https://github.com/lwfinger/rtw89.git ; cd rtw89 ; make ; sudo make install ; echo 'blacklist rtw89_8852be' | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-rtw89_8852be.conf
Copy-paste-Enter , Reboot.

the stock 6.1 kernel that comes with mx 23 doesn't seem to have a driver (rtw89_8852be as mentioned in Charlie Brown's post) for that adapter, but the 6.3 one in the mx package installer appears to if you want to try that after install.

The 6.1 kernel on the MX-23.2 KDE iso doesn't have the rtw89_8852be driver your wifi uses.
Any 6.3 or later kernel does. The MX-23.2 AHS iso has a 6.6 kernel and should work.
But you want KDE, so If you download the latest 6.6 kernel and headers here:

Code: Select all

https://mxrepo.com/mx/repo/pool/ahs/l/linux-liquorix/linux-image-liquorix-amd64_6.6-16~mx23ahs_amd64.deb
https://mxrepo.com/mx/repo/pool/ahs/l/linux-liquorix/linux-headers-liquorix-amd64_6.6-16~mx23ahs_amd64.deb
you can then install those two debs on a MX-23.2 KDE install (or even on a LiveUSB if you choose root persistence on boot) and your wireless should come up after a reboot to the new kernel.

Ok, but if I'm not wrong it doesn't work with the driver in kernel though it shows "state: up" etc.., hence the question:

Device-1: Realtek vendor: Lenovo driver: rtw89_8852be v: kernel pcie: speed: 2.5 GT/s lanes: 1
port: 2000 bus-ID: 02:00.0 chip-ID: 10ec:b852 class-ID: 0280
IF: wlp2s0 state: up

That QSI equivalent was from his Mint install where his wifi worked

Code: Select all

Maybe I misunderstood the question: It works on Mint but not on MX ootb ... then, yes, just install a newer kernel :)

(Yes, I thought it was not working on Mint, too, therefore that page from Mint etc... )

Thanks friends, I guess I didn't express myself clearly. Ok, telling again. My laptop is new. First I installed Linux Mint Cinnamon there. It turned out that wifi is not getting the network. Then I work according to the advice of that link. Now wifi is working. I want to install MX Kde. I tried live and saw that the wifi was not working. My question is that if I install rtw89_8852be, will the wifi work?

stay well

Ok, (it seems I understood the question correctly) but then again, the driver in kernel (rtw89_8852be which's loaded) seems to not work (assuming it's not another connection issue).

So, if you install a newer kernel on MX it may not work again (still nothing to lose, I'd try that first). So, you can try the alternative driver as above on both distros.

On MX you can temporarily use your dongle and install the most recent Liquorix with 2 clicks from "MX Package Installer" from menu. ..

Then if it's not working after a reboot (with the new kernel) : all you need to do is copy-paste-Enter that command then reboot.

There's ample evidence here in the forums by myself and @CharlesV et al that wifi problems on a Ryzen equipped computer can be solved by installing a Liquorix kernel.

HP 17; ryzen 3 3200; 500 GB SSD; 12 GB ram
Idea Center 3; 12 gen i5; 256 GB ssd;

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.
