Each Debian Version is supported 3 years from the debian team regarding security updates. Then it changes to LTS for 2 more years. The LTS are maintained by mainly by volunteers but also by supporting enterprises, but not anymore by the Debian security team.
For MX 21.x this means: Debian 11 (the basis) goes LTS in June, 2024 until its EOL in June, 2026. From the perspective of security: Is it safe to use MX 21.x beyond June,2024 or is upgrading to MX 23 the better way?
Does have MX 21 the same backport- and MX-repos than MX 23? Which repos/packages are maintained by the MX/Antix-Team the LTS-timeline of Debian (regarding potential security issues)?
Thank you,
R.

For the Debian side of your question see https://www.debian.org/releases/buster/amd64/release-notes/ch-information.en.html#limited-security-supportamsel73 wrote: Thu Jan 25, 2024 6:45 am Each Debian Version is supported 3 years from the debian team regarding security updates. Thanks for unearthing this useful information! Note that his current version is MX21, ie bullseye, so the link below is the appropriate one.FullScale4Me wrote: Thu Jan 25, 2024 9:32 pmFor the Debian side of your question see https://www.debian.org/releases/buster/amd64/release-notes/ch-information.en.html#limited-security-supportamsel73 wrote: Thu Jan 25, 2024 6:45 am Each Debian Version is supported 3 years from the debian team regarding security updates. The MX packaging team builds and keeps Firefox up to date themselves throughout the life of a release so you are not depending on Debian (which uses ESR) if you use the default browser in MX.

Re: Debian LTS: Upgrading MX 21 to MX 23?
Very interesting...
IMHO distros based on Debian Old Stable (LTS) should be ditched for usecases where security is important. "Supported until June 2026" should rather mean "Partially Supported until June 2026"...

Re: Debian LTS: Upgrading MX 21 to MX 23?
I think it should be understood the other way around. LTS in that context means "especially/only security updates" and "no feature updates/new versions". Security is one of the main priorities of Debian, since it's being using in servers worldwide. You will get security updates even in the oldoldstable branch (where MX 19 will still reside for a short time before it will be EOL).
BUT as stated in that note, Debian devs will scratch minor security backports in older branches. These will probably be not relevant for the average user.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
