MX21: "Icons too large" error

#1 Post by zimbodel »

On Mx 21, I get this error trying to install and run some applications.

Code: Select all

patchage:559317): Gdk-WARNING **: 02:16:06.871: gdk_window_set_icon_list: icons too large
Segmentation fault
Anyone know why this happens.
Looks like sloppy programming to me.

Sorry, I dont disclose private details and broad server details that can be used in attacks.
This is a public forum.
Better to ask for specific information related to the problem encountered.

I ask because I recall your MX installs were highly modified in the past to fully remove systemd-related packages, and you faced some issues with the installs running properly after that. If the system you are using now is modified the same way (or in a different way), then it's a very relevant fact to let the help team know. And you won't know if the QSI is helpful to identifying your problem if you don't show it.

For what it's worth, the QSI output already has the sensitive information filtered out.

This is particular one is a vanilla install.

As for the information gathering tool.
It shows processor type and sometimes manufacturing step info, even microcode info.

Disclosing e.g. just that you will quickly have a "jeep" or similar driving through the firewall.
There are so many unmitigated vulnerabilities at processor level that intel is incapable of fixing as it is embedded in design flaws, and more is discovered routinely and more are known by the criminals and powers.

Sorry I cannot risk this level of exposure.

I would ask the developer of whatever app you are using. sounds like a bug in the app.

Thanks dolphin_oracle.
I already did, and he has no clue and cannot present a fix.
This has been the issue with that particular piece of software over two releases of MX, with vanilla installs.
That is why I ask here.
The same does not happen on e.g other vanilla debian-based distros such as Ubuntu .
It only seems to happen on MX so far, although I must admit I did not try Debian as I dont use Debian anymore due to their hard coded/headed systemD approach.

Is there a way to totally reset the MX icon installations ?
Very important to delete the exisiting folder in this case.
It seems that another application might be overwriting base-system supplied icons early on in the installation process. That is all I can think of as the cause.

could be a few things. hard to know. if there is a system icon in use that is too big for whatever that app is trying to display, that is a possibility I guess. or maybe if it can't deal with svg files or something. trying a different icon theme would be the easiest thing. falling back to adwaita as the gtk default eliminates a lot of questions.

None of the font systems installed solved the problem. was a nice try thanks.

Developer finally replied that he uses GTK, so right there is the problem.
I will contact the gnome developers and find out what the icon size issue is about.
