The only problem I have with this great distro concerns Firefox. I can be using it and try to change to a different tab. It will freeze and the current tab will start to blink. I can remedy it by quitting Firefox and immediately restarting it. But it's really annoying when it happens at inopportune times.

I have a massive amount of RAM so surely it's not that. I tried disabling the hardware acceleration option too but it didn't help.

Thanks for any help

In MX Tweak, on the compositor tab, try changing VBlank to glx ( or if it is glx already, then change it to auto) and try it for a bit.

Also, I am going to suggest that you try out a liquorix kernel and ahs drivers (your macchine is new enough it could have some advantages.)

In order to do this second part, you will need to turn on the MX ahs repo in repo manager. ( MX Repo Manager | Individual Sources - then under the mx list ,check the last of the three lines, which ends with ahs. )

Then do an apt update.

To get the liquorix kernel on board - Go to MX Package Installer | Enabled repos tab, then search for liquorix . Once the list is populated, then choose both a liquorix image and corresponding headers file of your kernel choice. ( since your on a 6.1, you can make a small leap to 6.2.14 , or just take the plunge and head up the ladder - personally, I have been running 6.6.2-1 with no issues and think it si a great kernel!)

I would also check the 'Also install recommended.." on the bottom right and then click install.

Once you have installed the kernel, then go to boot options and make sure that the new kernel is selected for startup and reboot.

And then last, once your new kernel is installed and running, go back and upgrade your system. (You should see a few new updates as your now on the AHS repo. )

I'm not entirely sure if this would help.

Try turning off hardware acceleration for Firefox, then restart. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/pe ... e-settings

never mind, saw that you tried that.

Thanks for all the suggestions (especially CharlesV and siamhie). Gonna take me a while to try them all and figure out which one is the solution! Thanks again.

@VanZan There's already a "just 1 click" way on MX, to change to Intel driver.. (I hope you don't apply those "ppa" things in the link)..

Menu => "MX Tweak" : "Other" tab : "Use Intel instead of modesetting ... " ... Apply , reboot.

But I don't think that will solve it / related. It may be even worse in general. (You can revert back the same way).

Going by the bios date that would hold true, but his CPU dates from the 2012 -2013 model year which makes his laptop ten years old. I think that an older kernel like the Antix 5.10.xxx might be a better fit.
HP 15; ryzen 3 5300U APU; 500 Gb SSD; 8GB ram
HP 17; ryzen 3 3200; 500 GB SSD; 12 GB ram
Idea Center 3; 12 gen i5; 256 GB ssd;

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.

Normally I would agree with you... however... I have witnessed several times now where 6.2.x liquorix resolves a bunch of odd issues on some older laptops. (I dont recall how old, but I know one was pushing 2010 ish)

And good catch there on the year, I only saw the bios update date ;-/

If you start "firefox" from the terminal, and then reproduce a freeze when using it, are there any interesting warning or error messages that appear in its terminal? Ignore any that seem to refer to GTK theme issues, those appear all the time and are usually benign.

The MX Test repository is mostly backports; not the same as Debian testing
