Reducing the relative volume of notifications

#1 Post by paul1149 »

Currently, when Thunderbird reports an incoming mail, the volume blows me out of the water.

Back with MX21/kde, the volume control gave the ability to adjust notification volumes relative to other applications. This was good because it then didn't compete with whatever else you were doing at the time, like watching a video.

I don't see anything like that with the MX23/kde setup. Sometimes under MX21 you had to actually play the notification or system sound in order to see its volume slider under Volume Control, but with MX 23 even playing Thunderbird's notification sound does not produce the slider.

So I'd like to find out how to reduce notifications and system sounds relative to other application audio. I could get around this by editing the notification sound to a lesser volume, but I'd prefer a more direct route if possible.

Thanks.

Under xfce there is a system volume control that is different from applications, but how I resolved this in xfce was to set tbird to a really long sound, then work at decreasing the volume JUST for it, then set tbird back to a regular sound once I had the volume setup.

I did see on the net a method to 'pin' individual sounds down in a config, but again it was for xfce.. and I cannot seem to put my finger on it atm.

That's a clever strategy. That differentiation between system and apps I'm not seeing, and I didn't even see TB register while it played the notification sound, so your strategy wouldn't help here. I have to get around to doctoring the chosen notification sound to be quieter. One of these days....

Thank you. :)

I found system notifications relative volume. It's under System Settings / Hardware / Audio, and it works perfectly. I think this is an ALSA feature, whereas the volume control widget is Pulse. I'm not sure, but anyway it's working great.
