Yes . I was just trying to remember what it was to scan them all :)

( I used to use aircrack-ng  therefore I always forget the other )

Just to let you know it's definitely the monitor interfering with the wifi!
Our little girl got out of bed and came into the living room. So I switched the monitor and camera off and hey presto the wifi works perfectly!

Hurray , so, just :

Code: Select all

sudo apt update ; sudo apt install linssid -y
(you'll find LinSSID in menu after the installation)

Now scan when monitor is working and determine its channel.. Then enter router settings and change that ...

(In the meantime, you can still apply the conf file I posted, as those options provide a better (stronger) connection for that device / module )

Can anyone advise me on the best card to buy from the UK?

Wondering if we should just junk the PC!!
Spider... that link that Tim posted earlier would be my first port of call if I was in your situation. Why? because it appears to be a cost-effective method of seeing if an external dongle and not your internal card on that PC is the root cause. Mcgreg has suggested going down the path of replacing the internal card and I see that as having two probable issues even if it worked - 1. more involved than simply plugging into an usb port, a dongle and 2. no doubt more expensive than Tim's dongle. Now on that dongle, I would ask (perhaps you've mentioned it and I missed it in the thread) if the two machines are anything other than a goodly distance from the router? If close by then Tim's dongle should be ok to try and if though (like mine) the two are some distance away like 50 feet then the dongle I mentioned early on here with the two antennaes would be my choice. Tim's though all else being equal appears to have the correct Debian (MX) drivers and compatibility and is cheaper so again, go that way. As far as sending them back, Amazon is very good in that respect and ordinarily you don't need to pay postage even for a return.

My computer is approx 25 feet away and my husbands is approx 20 feet away from the router, I just measured them.

Sorry, I have some issues processing large blocks of text, does that mean it's okay to try Tim's link? Not sure which one yet, will have to backtrack.

I did try and search for all the recomended usb wifi thingys but couldn't find most of them on amazon and the ones I did find were not sold by amazon themselves so they charged large amounts of postage on top to get to the UK.

This link?
timkb4cq wrote: Sat Nov 11, 2023 12:18 pm I try to avoid usb wifi adapters with Realtek chips, which the one you asked about uses. The Linux kernel doesn't support most of them natively and manufacturers keep changing which chipsets they use with no notice so it's hard to tell if the third party realtek drivers MX does ship with will work. For example the 8811au, 8812au, 8812bu, 8821au, 8821cu, & 8821ce all use different drivers and there are some others with no working Linux drivers.
Something like this one with an Atheros chipset https://www.amazon.co.uk/Hacbop-802-11N ... 04&sr=8-11 is natively supported, as are most Mediatek & Intel wifi chipsets.

Yes but again, make sure you get the one with the antennae I mentioned earlier - see https://www.amazon.com/BrosTrend-1200Mb ... hdGY&psc=1 IF you are separated from the router by anything more than say 10 feet.

here it is Spider. BrosTrend Linux WiFi Adapter for Ubuntu, Mint, Kali, Debian, Lubuntu, Xubuntu, MATE, Zorin, Raspberry Pi 2+, Windows 11, Linux WiFi dongle 1200Mbps, 5GHz / 2.4GHz, 2 X 5dBi External Antennas, USB3.0
And to answer your earlier question after your diagnosis that the child's screen was causing the issue - yes, by getting a 5gz capable dongle you should be able to be isolated from hers and other 2.4ghz device interferences.
