Papirus Folders Colors
Re: Papirus Folders Colors
Hint, hint: I feel papirus-folders is such a small download that makes the papirus theme so much more flexible and enjoyable that it should be considered for inclusion in the default package set and made easily available from one of the MX tools !

Re: Papirus Folders Colors
MX Linux 23 - XFCE 4.18
Don't mean to revive an old post, but also don't want to take the chance of creating a new post for same topic.
I was wondering what are the options for being able to change folder colors here close to the end of 2023. I am using just the standard "Papirus" icon set that comes with MX (not the MX Papirus set). I was just looking to change the blue folder icons to maybe some shade of yellow, if there is a good looking yellow available.
I was hoping there would just be a text file that I could type in a new color code but I don't think it works that way. I have looked this up but most results kind of confusing, I have seen some bash scripts, programs, etc. but nothing seems like stuff I would want to try.
I looked in the MXPI but did not see anything regarding Papirus folders as mentioned in other responses to this post.
Would rather not have to install something separate to achieve this, but I also found this https://github.com/PapirusDevelopmentTe ... us-folders site before coming here (which is also mentioned by original poster)
Funny enough if you scroll down to the "Third-party packages" section it mentions
MX Linux - Steven Pusser - sudo apt-get install papirus-folders
I have not tried this yet because I did not see it in the MXPI as mentioned above.
Little strange that you can customize so many things, but in XFCE seems a little limited when it comes to being able to change folder icons, MIME icons, etc.
It has been mentioned to me that you can go in and replace MIME icons but odd no GUI based elements to change default folder icons / specific folder icons / MIME types. Seems like should be included by default.
Thank you for any information provided

Re: Papirus Folders Colors
Try Obsidian Icon Theme in the MXPI, and then once installed head MX Tweak | Appearance and Icons. Try Obsidian-Sand or one of those variants.

Re: Papirus Folders Colors
Thank you Charles
Wow you're quick, I was just editing my post to add a statement to the bottom and noticed I already had a response.
I will look into what you recommended, hopefully Obsidian is similar overall.
I already have this installed, I think it came with MX but I am not sure, I probably tried this in the past but don't remember, but I will give it another look.
Thanks again
Blue folder icons are nice, but it seems that many MIME icons use blue so everything starts to blend together after a while.

Re: Papirus Folders Colors
Thanks. Ya, the Obsidian group is pretty tight, really good looking and lots of color variants. Sand is my favorite and the OTHER icons ( documents, text, etc ) are pretty dang good!

Re: Papirus Folders Colors
Bunsen Labs has this nifty script to create a new theme using the differently coloured folders which already exist in papirus.
https://github.com/BunsenLabs/bunsen-pa ... r-color.sh
Apparently following colours are available: black, blue, bluegrey, breeze, brown, cyan, deeporange, green, grey, indigo, jet-black, magenta, nordic, orange, palebrown, paleorange, pink, red, teal, violet, white, yaru, yellow.
The couple I tried seem to work.

Re: Papirus Folders Colors
Regarding the first posts in this thread, there is no need to uninstall the Papirus icon theme.
I tested two ways to install papirus-folders in MX-23 Xfce and both worked well. One was v1.9.0 that I downloaded from MX-21.3 Xfce and the other was v1.12.1 from the link given in your Post #12 (both versions looked identical to me but I only tested for a short while - maybe there are more colors available with the later version but I forgot to count to compare).
Edit begin
I went back to find the differences in color choices:
I'll start with installing the .deb file that I downloaded from MX-21.3 which is included below this paragraph as a text attachment (it's only 9.4 KiB). The reason it appears as a text file is because this bulletin board does not accept .deb files as attachments. A workaround to that is to simply replace the ".txt" ending with ".deb" when you download it.
After changing it to a .deb file, install from wherever you put it by right-clicking it > select "Open With GDebi Package Installer" > follow the prompts. At this point the .deb file is no longer needed and can be deleted although you may want to save it for future installations.
Now that it is installed, a file color needs to be selected ("blue" is the default). This is how:
This is how I installed v1.12.1 from the github page from the link in Post #12. It was installed in MX-23.1 Xfce with essentially all the default settings.
The below single image contains two images using two different colors from the newly installed papirus-folders v1.9.0. Both have the Thunar side pane configured to "Tree" with a 24px size, the right pane is set to view as a detailed list.
The top image is using yellow and the bottom is using paleorange, which are the two closest to yellow I found. This is what they look like in MX-23.1 Xfce: Note that even though the image shows the github downloaded file (v1.12.1), both images are using the directory colors from the v1.9.0 deb file obtained from MX-21.3 Xfce.
You are correct. The papirus-folders package does NOT exist in MX-23.1. I would put in a request in the "Bugs and Non-Package Requests Forum" for it to be put in the MXPI since that package is in MX-19 and MX-21, and all versions work in MX-23. The same package that is in MX-19.4 (Xfce 4.14) and MX-21.3 (Xfce 4.18) can be both be installed and work in MX-23.1 (Xfce 4.18):advice1010 wrote: Wed Nov 01, 2023 3:27 pm ...

...
- MX-19.4 MXPI Enabled Repository has v1.3.1
MX-19.4 MXPI Test Repository has v1.9.0 - MX-21.3 MXPI Test Repository has v1.9.0
(MX-21.3 MXPI Enabled Repository does not have the "papirus-folders" package) - MX-23.1 both of the above versions work as well as v1.12.1 from the github page

I went back to find the differences in color choices:
- MX-23
v1.9.0 has 23 colors
v1.12.1 has 25 colors (adwaita and darkcyan are added to the 23 colors) - MX-21
Both 1.9.0 and 1.12.1 have 23 colors - MX-19
Both 1.9.0 and 1.12.1 have 18 colors (breeze, carmine, palebrown, paleorange, and yaru are removed from the 23 colors)
I'll start with installing the .deb file that I downloaded from MX-21.3 which is included below this paragraph as a text attachment (it's only 9.4 KiB). Now that it is installed, a file color needs to be selected ("blue" is the default). This is how:
- First get a list of the available colors for the directories by running
Code: Select all
papirus-folders -l
- To change to yellow, run the below command. Note that the flag is an upper-case "C". The output is shown in the below code window:
Code: Select all
papirus-folders -C yellow papirus-folders: Changing color of folders to 'yellow' for 'Papirus' ...
- For it to take effect, select another icon theme and then go back to Papirus (or log out/in).
Note that after a color is selected, running papirus-folders -l will show a "greater-than" symbol (>) to the left of the selected color.
This is how I installed v1.12.1 from the github page from the link in Post #12. It was installed in MX-23.1 Xfce with essentially all the default settings.
- Go to https://github.com/PapirusDevelopmentTe ... us-folders as stated in your Post #12.
- On that github page, click on the "Latest" button (right side below the "Releases" header) to download the latest version (1.12.1).
- Under the "Assets" header, click on "Source code (zip)" and download it anywhere (it can be deleted after it is installed if desired).
- Click (or double-click) on the papirus-folders-1.12.1.zip file to extract it (it doesn't matter where - it can be deleted when done if desired).
- Right-click on the parent directory papirus-folders-1.12.1 and select "Open Terminal Here".
- In the terminal, run the below command and follow the prompts to install papirus-folders:Papirus-folders is now installed. Now to select another color for the Thunar folders (directories).
Code: Select all
bash install.sh
- To get the list of the available directory colors, run:
Code: Select all
papirus-folders -l
- Yellow is used in this example for selecting another directory color. Note that the command uses an upper-case "C" for the change flag. The output is shown below the command:
Code: Select all
appirus-folders -C yellow papirus-folders: Changing color of folders to 'yellow' for 'Papirus' ...
- For the change to take effect, select another icon theme and then go back to Papirus (or log out/in).
Note that after a color has been selected, running papirus-folders -l will show a "greater-than" symbol (>) to the left of the color that is being used.

Re: Papirus Folders Colors
Just read your posts, I have not tested either out yet but just wanted to make sure I respond to say thank you, just in case I get sidetracked.
@Melber
Thank you for your response, I have not seen this one before, I will try this out.
@Stuart_M
Wow, thank you very much for your response and for putting the level of detail you put into it, very helpful when people provide steps to how to achieve result for questions asked.
As mentioned I have not tested this out yet but when I do, if it is good I will put in a request for this like you said.
I will try the newer version out first but if that does not work, good to have the version from the older MX repo, just in case.
Overall everything you have provided saves me a lot of time, which is very helpful because I have so so so many things to test, thanks again.
I am sure something like this has already requested but eventually I will probably also make a request to XFCE to maybe be able to provide something built in for this (without having to use show thumbnail trick), I know Plasma has some ablities to change folder icons.
Would like to be able to have a GUI to change MIME type icons as well, which Plasma offers also.
Anyways thanks again guys

Re: Papirus Folders Colors
Wow, in case anyone is still interested in this, the most recent release of MX XFCE (23.2) now comes with a new tool called "Papirus Folder Colors" which solves this issue. Was so surprised when I saw this in the release notes, Amazing!
@Melber
The "About" for this application mentions that you are the developer of this, just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate this. This was something I was really looking for, what a great job.
Thank You so much for this, this is so helpful, great addition to MX
