Unable to install Tor Browser in KDE MX 23

#1 Post by AltTabDelete »

Tried installing from Discover, tried from Tor Project Installation instructions https://tb-manual.torproject.org/installation/ both graphical and CLI methods. No joy :( If anyone could point me to some idiot-proof instructions, I would appreciate it.

Works here ootb, either way CLI or GUI:
E.g this way on the konsole terminal:

Code: Select all

sudo nala update
and

Code: Select all

sudo nala install torbrowser-launcher
when done klick on the torbrowser-launcher within the menu to get the Tor browser installed. -> [Solved]

Re: Unable to install Tor Browser in KDE MX 23 and have it connect  [Solved]

I should have expressed myself more clearly. I have been unable to install the Tor Browser program and have it successfully connect to the internet. I first attempted to download the Tor Browser at my public library; Cisco Umbrella helpfully blocked all access to any tor.org website. Gave up, went home, tethered to my cell (only home internet) and could download the Tor Browser from the web site and from Discover. However, Tor Browser would immediately give an error message "unable to connect to Tor" when opened. After further research, I have learned that my cell provider T-Mobile blocks Tor connections. So the issue apparently is my tethering ISP as well as the IT department at the public library. I'll try to find an unblocked ISP to try to connect and report back. Not apparently an MX Linux problem.

I also recently installed MX 23 KDE and on previous setups I always downloaded the bundle from the tor site. This time however I noticed it was in the repo so took that route and it installed without a hitch. You might like to try that.

Can you get an less restricted Internet connection at a coffee shop or the like, at least to test out the installation?
MXPI = MX Package Installer
QSI = Quick System Info from menu
The MX Test repository is mostly backports; not the same as Debian testing

In the meantime you could always install Opera and use its built-in VPN. That will give you good anonymity.
