How to enable laptop monitor when using external screen

#1 Post by xamio »

Hi all,

Just installed the latest MX linux and it recognized my external monitor out of the box which is really nice. Unfortunately it disables the built-in laptop screen and I can't get it enabled again. I would like to enable it because now for example when I unplug the external monitor or boot without an external monitor attached I get a black screen.

My laptop has a amd/nvidia setup with nouveau being loaded. Xrandr also shows my laptop screen but it doesn't show up in the display configuration. Enabling with something like xrandr --output -myEDP --auto doesn't work either.

Code: Select all

Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1920 x 1080, maximum 16384 x 16384

I was hoping someone could give me some pointers of where to look to enable the built in screen.

Maybe you just need to use the Fn + ... key to change display output, i.e. , it's Fn + F4 here: external only, built-in only, both (to switch bw. them).

It is not much QSI

Maybe you have tested the switch for it in screen settings:

We are going to need your computer’s complete profile before we can proceed, so you need to post the output from the QSI utility. The Quick System Info (QSI) utility is located in MX Tools and its output is automatically formatted for use here in the forum. Run the QSI utility, click “Copy for Forum” at the bottom and then just paste it here in your thread.

HP 15; ryzen 3 5300U APU; 500 Gb SSD; 8GB ram
HP 17; ryzen 3 3200; 500 GB SSD; 12 GB ram
Idea Center 3; 12 gen i5; 256 GB ssd;

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.
