libbotan, librnp0 and libtspil no longer required in mx linux 23 xfce?

#1 Post by SimplyFojin »

When going through the standard way of updating debian packages(whenever I get a green box icon located in the panel) I got this odd message in the terminal...

Code: Select all

full upgrade
  Reading package lists...
  Building dependency tree...
  Reading state information...
  Calculating upgrade...
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
     libbotan-2-19 (2.19.3+dfsg-1)
     librnp0 (0.16.3-1)
     libtspi1 (0.3.15-0.3)
Use 'apt autoremove' to remove them.
Why are these debian packages no longer required? I think this is odd. Wouldn't be risky to remove them fearing stability issues since MX Linux relies on debian 12?

Usually that happens on the next update after you remove a package. Its dependencies don't automatically get removed.

Seeing this too, just updated using Synaptic after checking for updates (right click - check for updates on the updater icon).

For info, this is what happened prior to the above appearing:

Code: Select all

Upgraded the following packages:
libc-bin (2.36-9+deb12u1) to 2.36-9+deb12u3
libc-dev-bin (2.36-9+deb12u1) to 2.36-9+deb12u3
libc-l10n (2.36-9+deb12u1) to 2.36-9+deb12u3
libc6 (2.36-9+deb12u1) to 2.36-9+deb12u3
libc6-dev (2.36-9+deb12u1) to 2.36-9+deb12u3
libc6:i386 (2.36-9+deb12u1) to 2.36-9+deb12u3
locales (2.36-9+deb12u1) to 2.36-9+deb12u3
slack-desktop (4.34.120) to 4.34.121
thunderbird (1:102.15.1-1~deb12u1) to 1:115.3.1-1~deb12u1

I have learned to not remove anything in the auto removable section.. they aren't harming anything, after all.

libbotan, librnp0 and libtspil used to be pulled in by Thunderbird but no longer appear in its dependencies. That's why this showed up.

Would you say for me not to do anything to remove them since that aren't causing dependency hell?

I've seen forum members advising not to run 'apt autoremove' as it might cause a problem.
How much of a chance of causing a problem – I do not know.

But AFAIK, you can remove the listed individual packages themselves.

The only "harm" is that they will take up a little unnecessary space in your system and extra microseconds for APT to manage them in its database.. How apocalyptic this is depends on how much a neat freak one is...
MXPI = MX Package Installer
QSI = Quick System Info from menu
The MX Test repository is mostly backports; not the same as Debian testing
