I was just dismayed to find an image I posted at 960 x 540 was removed and replaced with a link. I had resized it to 25% from 3840 x 2160 to not be intrusive on a forum page.
Yes I know (now) the forum rules say 640 x 620, but that rule was made in 2010 when screens were much smaller.
I request that allowed image size be upgraded to something like 1024 x 768. It is 2023 now, after all.
I also think it's about used space and traffic.
Very few users will compress their jpg/png afterwards and I have encountered 1024x768 images in other forums that, because they were poorly compressed or not compressed at all, took up almost as much space as a UHD wallpaper in my case (and often more than a full HD image).

In nature there are neither rewards nor punishments.
There are consequences.
The Forum Rule regarding image size will remain as is. Many smaller laptop screens are in use by Forum members and larger images overwhelm the screen. This also is evident on larger 1920 x 1080 screens. Linking to an image should not be a burden. An exception is made in the Forum "User Contributed Wallpaper" where larger images are allowed as it is not a help forum and its purpose is only to submit images.
