No error messages or anything. Just a cursor with black screen.CharlesV wrote: Sat Apr 29, 2023 11:52 am if you try to start xfce manually do you see any error messages ?
Code: Select all
startx
Cannot enter OS

Re: Cannot enter OS
I had a situation when I was attempting to run 5 monitors where I got into a back screen with blinking cursor and I deleted my displays.xml file and it resolved it. Might be worth a try to rename that file or move it some place and reboot and see ?
Otherwise, all I can think of is to reinstall lightdm and xfce.
Code: Select all
~/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/displays.xml

I'm very beginner in linux.CharlesV wrote: Sat Apr 29, 2023 12:26 pm I had a situation when I was attempting to run 5 monitors where I got into a back screen with blinking cursor and I deleted my displays.xml file and it resolved it. Re: Cannot enter OS
This will MOVE the file to your home folder
Then reboot and see if the login is working properly.
If you need / want to move the file back into place, then do this
Code: Select all
mv ~/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/displays.xml displays.xml

mv displays.xml ~/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/displays.xml

Re: Cannot enter OS
If you have no success with CharlesV's suggestion, There is another option, but it depends on how much spare cash you have to spend on a couple of pieces of hardware. What I do in these situations is remove the HDD/SSD or NVMe from the machine and then for HDDs/SSDs I then mount them in one of these:

and for NVMes, I use one of these:

I do this so that I can access and edit their content from another, known good, computer. In your case, you could free up space by moving the large files that are clogging up your system to an external storage device. Then replace the drive in your laptop and get back to business. In your specific case, though, I think that you should purchase a larger capacity drive to replace your existing one and the reinstall MX. Here’s a video that shows you how to do the upgrade on your laptop model:

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.
