No sound after recent updates - PulseEffects are broken

#1 Post by Lichuj »

Hello

The last few days brought a lot of fixes to desktop-defaults-mx-common. Unfortunately, in my case, this resulted in no sound, which has worked flawlessly so far. I don't know exactly which fixes might have caused this as there were quite a few and they were released in short intervals. It's definitely a problem with PulseEffects, which I originally installed using MXPI via the popular applications tab. At the moment I can't launch the PulseEffects panel at all where you can add sound effects. I uninstalled the PulseEffects package via MXPI popular tabs, rebooted the computer, reinstalled and it didn't help. After switching directly to the sound card, the sound works. The whole recording tab is empty which doesn't look good.

the only thing pulseaudio related that desktop-defaults-mx-common set sup is that it provides a file called 00-enable-autospawn.conf under /etc/pulse/client.conf.d that enables autospawn of the pulseaudio dameon. the file is not new, having been added to the package back in 2019.

I restored the clonezilla system image from September. The image is quite old so I went into MXPI and updated all the packages from the stable repo. After the update, there was exactly the same sound problem as described above. I didn't want to mess with such a system too much, so I restored the same image again, this time updating several thematically connected packages. After updating the packages from the log below, the same situation occurred again, so we managed to narrow down the problem a bit. Just in case, I copied the entire log directory from /etc. I don't really know what to check now. Some help would be appreciated :-)

I don't know much about those lsp-plugins and pulseeffects but maybe @AVLinux knows more. pulseeffects does have a dependency on lsp-plugins

**edit** also tagging @Stevo as those packages are relatively new adds to the repo.

After removing all ls-plugins-xxxxx packages from the system the problem is partly solved. I'm able to open PulseEffects GUI however some effects don't work... like equalizer which is main reason that that I use PulseEffects

@dolphin_oracle

Well you can yell at me about the latest update of the LSP-Plugins because I tested them in Reaper and Ardour and said they should be OK in main... BUT!.. I'm quite baffled why PulseEffects would have any dependency on them...? The LSP-Plugins are a set of LV2 and VST Audio Plugins for use in Audio Recording applications like Ardour and Reaper etc... there are also a set of LADSPA Plugins (which are mainly obsolete) and lastly clients for use with the JACK Audio server. They have no direct correlation with PulseAudio at all, 99.9% of people use them as LV2 or VST formats within a Recording Program and some people use the JACK Clients but I have never heard of them being used directly with Pulse or in conjunction with PulseEffects.

There is no mention here about using them with PulseAudio or PulseEffects, In my opinion these should not be a dependency:
https://lsp-plug.in/?page=manuals&section=requirements

@Stevo are the dependencies from the Sid sources?

Sound is OK.

I guess "gstreamer (bridge...) pulseeffects plugin" is
causal element (I'm not confident about this case)

I have similar problem. After the latest Chromium browser update suddenly Pulse Effects wouldnt start anymore. No sound in Firefox. Sound in Chromium browser was still working.

When I removed Pulse Effects sound in Firefox was working again. When I REinstalled Pulse Effects sound in Firefox was gone again.

Freja I am gonna try and install the Flatpak edition of Pulse Effects. I'll report back if that worked for me too!

Yes the Flatpak edition of Pulse Effects works perfectly. The flatpak version does take longer to start up though than the standard MX version of Pulse Effects, so I do hope a solution to the NO sound problem is found.

I really do NEED Pulse Effects because of hearing issues that are quite severe. Pulse Effects is the only working version of a great equalizer, so thanks to everybody keeping this great software up and working!

@SO2001 An updated pulseeffects package is now in the MX Test Repo. Use the MX Package Installer to upgrade to it.
This should fix the problem, but please leave feedback so (if it fixes the problem) we can get this into the Main repo soonest.

After installing the updated package, testing it, installing the other ~45 updates that became available this weekend, restarting, & then testing Pulse Effects again just in case, it seems to be working!

Tried it with Firefox, Spotify (which was VERY broken before the fix), and QMPlay2, which all worked perfectly, & just for fun Minecraft, which didn't seem to notice Pulse Effects was there (but that could very well be a Minecraft problem & in any case I had it blacklisted before). The GUI opens normally.

Hopefully it's working for everyone else as well! I can barely stand to listen to youtube videos over my speakers without it & I really missed the reverb for music; tysm for the quick response & fix.
