AV Linux MX Edition 21.2 development news

#1 Post by AVLinux »

Hi MX'ers and AVL'ers!

With the recent update of MX to 21.2.1 it is also a good time to freshen the AV Linux MX Edition ISO with some updates and incidental fixes and that is in the works. This will not be a new version simply the current version with some important updates on the ISO. The release of Ardour 7 has been big news in the Linux Audio world but I learned many years ago that putting the 'official' release of a new Ardour version rarely works out because new releases flush out new bugs so it is usually best to wait for an interim version after a new version has been out for a couple of weeks so I am biding my time for a nightly build with some bugfixes. As a reminder Ardour is not free however it's developer allows me to provide a full version of their supported bundle on the AV Linux ISO. Repository Packages of Ardour from it's source code are permitted but not supported by it's developers and this is why I provide their own supported builds with thanks to lead developer Paul Davis.

Recently the new Audio server 'PipeWire' has been updated in the MX Test Repo (thanks @dolphin_oracle @Stevo @DeepDayze) to be clear an ISO update is no place to completely adopt a new Audio system however with some work and testing over the next week or so it may be possible for AV Linux users to optionally install and use PipeWire at their own discretion. There will be a PipeWire setup metapackage coming soon to MX Test Repo and I need to do some in-depth testing on fresh AV Linux installs to determine the steps to do this as simply as possible and figure out what parts of the existing JACK/Pulse pajackconnect setup are affected and/or not needed. 'qpwgraph' has also been added to MX Test which is essentially Qjackctl for PipeWire.

Beyond that obvious updates will be Ardour 7, Mixbus 8 (demo) Reaper (demo), Kdenlive, Cinelerra-GG and probably some updates to the Audio Plugin Demos.

Stay tuned, as my fall work season slows down I hope to turn more attention to this ISO update and hope to have something for early November.

Best, Glen

Thanks Glen. I'm looking forward to the additions.

Alex.
