fotoxx-21.60 is in main and fotoxx-22.14 is in test.
Fotoxx is a free Linux program for editing photos or other images and managing a large collection. Image directories (folders) can be viewed as a scrolling gallery of thumbnail images. Navigation of folders and subfolders is simple and fast. Click on a thumbnail for a full window view of the image. The image can be zoomed, panned and scrolled using the mouse. Gallery thumbnails can vary from small to huge. Popup windows can be used to view multiple images at any scale. Galleries are also used to display image search results and albums. Albums are ordered collections of selected images

fotoxx-22.14 from Testing tried.
Read in some directories (ca 500 *.arw + 2500 *jpg, sony a7) and generate thumbnails, very fast, nice load distribution on all cores/threads, no interference with other programs (deadbeef+firefox).

For comparison, let's run a popular competitor: Shotwell.
Modest load distribution, only on a few cores, double time for thumbnail generation, music playback stuttered in the last third, jerky when scrolling in Firefox. So I didn't buy a 12 core with 32 GB ram for that.
And, now I know again why I threw shotwell down years ago, for every raw it exports the internal preview JPG. Depending on the camera, this does NOT have the original size and is nonsense if you have anyway RAW + JPG photographed. But so can then times quickly from a stock of 10,000Raw +15,000JPG a total stock of 35000 images arise. And in the database view of shotwell you do not see that, only if you look with the file manager and / or another image viewer in the directories.

Fotoxx generates its thumbnails and in contrast to earlier (>2018) when I still use opensuse, fotoxx now also eats the sony a7 raws without any problems. When I only had canons, I enjoyed using fotoxx.
So now it has become very interesting for me again :-)

That was now only a test on my test installation (same computer, other SSD) if I notice nothing adverse, I let it loose on the real image stock, so about 15,000 Raw and 18000 JPG images from a dozen cameras.
This will probably take longer than a minute or two :)

fotoxx-22.14 from testing, Installed on the primary system, nice load balancing when indexing
Image

less than 2:20 minutes for the complete indexing including generation of the 28.000 thumbnails, that's what I call acceptably fast ;-}

Tried a few tools and functions in the meantime, so far everything seems to work as it should.

fotoxx-22.16 is now in test.

Code: Select all

fotoxx-22.16 2022.05.01
------------
 • Tools > Popup Text: added [Edit] button for easier customization.
(user-defined cache of special characters for input into text widgets)
 • Select > Copy/Complex: new tool for copy and paste of areas having complex
and/or low-contrast boundaries. Similar to prior "Select Hairy".
 • Preferences: most changes no longer require an application restart.
 • PT Panorama was removed because underlying tool [Hugin] has disappeared.

Indexing takes a little longer than with 22.14, about 2:40 with almost the same number of images (around 28,000).
So still fast enough :-)
Tried out a few image operations, everything worked, no abnormalities so far.

fotoxx-22.30 is now in test.
fotoxx-22.30 2022.08.01
------------
• Slide Show: new transition type: flip-tiles.
• Keyboard numeric pad can be used for gallery navigation (also with num-lock).
• New: Download Maps: download geographic map files for use with Fotoxx
(fotoxx-maps package is now obsolete for fotoxx-22.30 and later).
• Increase gesettings timeout to avoid bogus "not responding" from Mutter.
• UI improvement: mouse-click with tiny motion is not mistaken as drag.
• The program addr2line (package binutils) must be installed for Fotoxx.
Previoulsy it was included in the appimage container, but this no longer
works over multiple flavors and releases of Linux.
• Bugfix: Adjust RGB: undo/redo was not working correctly.
• Bugfix: New Session failed if current file contained embedded quotes.
• Bugfix: Poss. crash if [ALL] folder tree raced up/down using arrow keys.
• Bugfix: Flatten Photo: Possible crash with extreme flattening.
• Bugfix: minor memory leak in gallery display code.
Note: the map package is no longer required. - mike
